The Cost of Healthcare

A while ago, a few of us had an exchange related to healthcare in the U.S. Here's an article by a ENT specialist that explains a big part of the problem (though not all of it): https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/03/...-region&WT.nav=opinion-c-col-left-region&_r=0

It's not at all politically partisan.
There is strong evidence that long-term oversight by primary care doctors increases the quality of care and decreases costs.

That’s the part that got my attention as I read at least a year or two ago that societies which see their primary doctors more….are healthier than those that prioritize seeing specialists. Perhaps by the time your see or feel the need to see a specialist you are too far gone.

I agree completely, Stalker--though I know it sounds a bit selfish for me to say so. And I don't think it's to any large degree about paying primary care docs more but of changing how primary care is regarded and organized. Too many people, including some specialists, look upon GPs as docs who weren't smart enough or ambitious enough to become specialists. And I would say the worst offenders are some hospitals who promote their specialists as if they were demi-gods.

The dynamic may already be changing with the growth of Urgent Care Centers, making it easier to access quality care. I’ve largely stopped seeing my GP, tiring of “he has an opening at”, or “he’s not in so you can see Dr. so and so”…etc…,although both are improvements on “take an aspirin and I’ll see you in the morning.” That actually happened when I was a little guy with mother’s reaction being instant. We never saw Dr. Harbaugh again. Will say I’ve been impressed the occasions my wife and I used these facilities.
Demi gods, indeed! Just what we need, adding ego to a beleaguered system unmercifully pegged to the bottom line.

We have a system here that in almost all cases allows patients to get an appointment on the same day (75% of the time if they call before 10:00 am) or the next day (20% of the time). What people have realized is that if patients have to wait more than three days to see a GP, they'll go to an urgent care center (where they may get very good care but where they usually don't see a doc they've seen before--not ideal) or the problem will be much worse with potentially very bad consequences, or the problem will have gone away or subsided to the point where the visit is unnecessary.

It sure is a changed world Tulla. I can get to a doctor asap (UC Ctr + xrays), shots/BP at CVS and online literature for reference if you can avoid the trap of self diagnosis. Quite a change from peniclilin shots on the couch as a kid for earaches!
Add in AI, robotics, nanotechnology and more to see we are on the front end of exciting times and major change in the field and others. Rather be galavanting about the oceans and world with the Conquistadores but these are still exciting times.

How can 13 white guys go behind closed doors and write a healthcare bill that the house will try to pass without telling anyone what's in it? Neither side should be able to do something like this.

As one borderline insane female Congresswoman from northern California once said, "we need to pass it so you can see what's in it." That is not an exact quote, but it captures what ole Nancy meant. So, there is precedent here, after all!

Would it satisfy your color conscious mindset if they were 13 brown guys, black guys, yellow guys or red guys? Since you had to bring color into it, what would you prefer?

Nope. Shouldn't be 13 of one kind of anything. In case you haven't looked around lately, America is not one of anything. If it was a jury would it be a fair representation of America?

There you go again.

In the Senate alone there were 36 days of hearings and 25 days of debate about the ACA. As I understand it now, the Republican leadership is planning not to have any hearings about whatever it is the group of 13 proposes.

That's a good point Tulla. And it's also a good counterpoint to say that Obama(highcost)care was passed on reconciliation when major legislation like it was normally not passed in this fashion. Bottom line is that you do what you can/want when you are in power. Not saying it's right or wrong, but, again, for the second time today, the point is that there is precedent, and, in this case, recent democrat precedent.

With all the issues this country is facing my only concern is qualifications, not their color. You’re still hung up on color?! I don’t care if they are all black or all white. What's next, sexual preferences and positions?

With 50% of the country being female you don't think they should be represented in a board that is making healthcare choices for them?

Yes, but that's okay with the Trump fans even though it will likely be devastating for many of them. Wait until it guts Stalker and ChristieFan's medicaid.

Qualifications? Really? Have you seen any of the cabinet picks who have no idea what they are doing? Rick Perry, Ben Carson, Betsy DeVos?

Well, we know the "health care" choice many women make about their unborn don't we? So then, why can't men make choices about women's lives ? At least it won't involve loss of life.

Tell us why each of those three individuals have no idea what they are doing. On DeVos, you might or might not have a point, but I'd like to hear you articulate it. I suspect that MSNBC or NPR told you to think this. Ben Carson could do almost any job and he would understand it better on day one than you ever would.

Apparently, you don't know about how Sean Donovan mismanaged HUD (Housing and Urban Development) funds to the point where an audit was almost impossible. I don't recall seeing any posts from you about this.

And do you think Perry has no idea about energy, having served as governor of Texas, where oil is central to the economy? Do you even know why the Dept. of Energy was created?

So there should be a Transgender member?? I mean, they are part of the population so why not have a transgender person in a position of power?? If you have to ask the question then you fail the course!!

If it was a jury would it be 13 white old guys? Use some common sense.

I think you are arguing against yourself Reluctant. Look at his cabinet. Women, minorities and white men represented, as an example of diversity. It's just that they are not the minorities or the women you would have chosen. To the victor............!!
