Austin Scott Highlights 2000-2002

While old games are being posted, I checked back on Todd Shafer’s page to see what he has in his archives and found the full Austin Scott highlight tape. This was on YouTube years ago, but taken down. Obviously a lot of fun.

The first half are highlights from his sophomore year, then the 2002 clips start around 11:30 if you’re scrolling.

Enjoy

It's hard to believe he didn't pan out. He's the best high school running back I've ever seen play and that includes miles Sanders, DeAndre Swift, Bob sanders, ect... I still say Scott was the best.

I say this all of the time - Saquon Barkley had the career I thought Austin Scott was going to have. Having watched both of them play A LOT in high school, I thought Saquon would be a good Big Ten player by his junior year or so and Scott would walk right into campus and be a star. Shows what I know!

I couldn't agree more and it's not like he was surrounded by unbelievable talent. A lot of those runs in his highlight video were all him. He torched some very good teams his senior year like Behca and woody high. Still to this day he's the best high school running back I've ever seen play and that's hard for me to admit being a western pa guy. I always wander what might of been if he kept his head on straight and chose a better fit then PSU.

Great tapes !!!

only saw him play once against woodland hills in 2002 state title game, can't believe it's been almost 20 years

i would say he was the most impressive high school running back i saw in the last 20 years

i saw miles sanders several times get shut down by worse teams, i can't believe he turned out to be the better back

Kevin Jones from Cardinal O Hara I believe In 2000 was the number 1 rated RB in the country. I could be off a bit , but he was incredible and went to Va. Tech and then to the Chicago Bears.

Haus - your point on him not being surrounded by unbelievable talent is a good one. He didn't have another scholarship Division I player on offense - fullback Nick Pinchek walked on at Penn State, the left tackle Morgan Thomas (who was only a sophomore) was a very nice player at East Stroudsburg, and I think they had one more lineman play at Bloomsburg or Shippensburg. But certainly no stars. Frankly, didn’t have close to the offensive line they had his sophomore year in 2000 with a bunch of FCS guys, plus Massaquoi at tight end.

I do subscribe to the theory that Penn State was his biggest mistake. Frankly, if he went and played for a coach that didn't care that he skipped class and smoked weed, I still think he could have flourished. Rob Melosky made some headlines when he just about said as much in a Philly Inquirer article about Scott - I think the line was "Pete Carroll just lets his guys go out and play." Scott being in the doghouse so much kept him off the field, then him being off the field led to more doghouse behavior, and we all know the story from there.

Getting back to my Scott/Saquon comparison, when Scott was in high school he always had all of these whispers and rumors around him - mostly around how and why he missed his junior season. Meanwhile, everybody around the Valley universally LOVED Saquon. There are few high level football players that have had a reputation as sterling as him, and all of those work ethic and "great kid" things have followed him to Penn State and the NFL and I think are a big reason why he's been able to maximize his talent in a way Scott didn't.

And the Detroit Lions

Rover couldn't agree more. People say Scott was a giant bust but it wasn't for a lack of talent. He had the whole Antonio Bryant thing going on. All the talent in the world but had mental health issues. He's one of the best high school football players I've ever seen play.
