Thanks for the lists and the work, Rover. The lists raise lots of questions. Clearly, at least in the eyes of those who rank the players, there's been a big shift--and not, as you say, just to SJP but from most of the state to the Philly area. There are some interesting omissions. For instance, Chris Whitney (SJP QB who went on to lead Villanova to a national championship) is absent, but Skyler Mornhinweg (who was a very good hs QB but who may have been ranked as high as he was partly because of his name) gets a fairly high ranking. It's also the case that the lists are very much, as intended, about projected quality as college players rather than about actual quality as high school players. For instance, the Johnson brothers were great linebackers at SJP but were all too small to be starters at PSU, Michigan, Georgia, etc.---and probably wanted to go to Princeton anyway. Much the same for Pat Kaiser at SJP, who sent the city scoring record in, I think, 2002.

Do you see particular demographic trends? My sense, based not just on obvious changes at SJP, is that the drop in football participation is most evident in middle-class white communities but much less so in African-American ones, including middle-class African-American ones. I realize my perspective is very much an SJP one.

first, we have to realize the "ranking industry" has changed over the last 10-20 years. I'm just guessing here, but 30 years ago, maybe "rivals" gave out "stars and did rankings." Now we have ESPN, rivals, 247, and others- so that changes and might "skew our data" about kids/player prospects

My next theory- I wonder if Philly area has gotten and produced more top recruits- is because it's easier to "be seen" and recruited in such a large metro area? Meaning, Big 10 and SEC scouts- it's easier for those scouts to see 10 great prospects in a 20 square mile area in Philly, rather than start in Erie, drive all over the state of PA, to find 5-6 kids? So that contributes to kids playing football more, or some families living there instead of central PA? Lastly, very likely "part" of the reason, is the "higher profile" programs of Wood, SJP, and Imhotep, drawing families, kids and scouts?

Also it seems the Phila .region did not get much recognition until District 12 joined the PIAA. At least thats what it appears.

That’s why I use the 247 composite - it combines all of the major ranking services so it’s not just one single opinion. I didn’t go back to the 90s because there isn’t dependable information. 2003 is the first year there are enough ranking services to build a composite. I agree that rankings have gotten better in the last two decades - mostly due to the widespread availabiltiy of video - but these are as good a snapshot as exists for the consensus view of top end Pennsylvania talent.

Looks like over the years you can see St joes preps and Imhoteps talent really grow. Makes you wonder.

Kevin Jones was the #1 ranked player in the country in 2000 (graduated 01) his Sr year at OHara. A little before your time frame obviously but shows the Philly area was getting recognized before the move to PIAA

There is only a top 10 for Pennsylvania for the 2001 recruiting class, initially intended that to be my start, but it didn’t have the data. That list was

1. Cardinal O’Hara - Kevin Jones (Virginia Tech) :::Five Star:::
2. McKeesport
3. Sharon
4. Parkland :::Four Star:::
5. Erie Cathedral Prep
6. Thomas Jefferson
7. Belle Vernon
8. Bishop McDevitt
9. Morrisville
10. Downingtown East

And to your point Newport, has the change been that the PCL just has better visibility now, and that they also would have had all of these major conference players 20 years ago, but nobody was looking? Or has the upper end quality of player, certainly in volume and concentration, materially changed. I’d argue the latter.

The offers to kids in 8th grade and 9th grade seem to be a fairly new phenomenon. If this were ten and certainly 15 years ago, Foulke at SJP would just be a freshman QB almost no one had ever heard of. Whether he's the next Jones or McCord is not at all clear now.

I agree that the PCL joining the PIAA has not been the major factor in so many more PCL players getting noticed. I think we have to look outside football itself at demographic, cultural, and educational factors. It's certainly true that kids and families from places and communities from which SJP has never or rarely drawn students / players are showing interest in SJP. It doesn't seem mainly the result of SJP football people recruiting in those places and communities. (I'm not saying SJP doesn't recruit.)

Early offers seem to be as much about how the athlete has been marketed / shopped at camps as it is about their ability vs other top athletes in their class. Not that many families have their kids with top QB trainers at 12/13, taking them on college visits in 8th grade, playing the social media game (both athlete and parent) in middle school, etc... the offers themselves are meaningless, but, if the athlete does become big time, then they can say "hey we've been in your camp since 8th grade, these other guys are knocking on your door a bit late."

It seems like most the talent in Philly is getting recruited by 4 schools right now. Neuman, Imhotep, St joes prep, and Roman.
