Check the tapes on Parklands punts. What's with the pooch kicks? Totally dumb, who are they surprising? PCC called a time out before the one and Parkland came back and still pooched it, lol. Then they go for a 4th and 10 early in the game near mid-field? Why not punt there and pin PCC? The Parkland coaches totally killed their own team. And maybe the PCC punter and punt coverage forced the Parkland returners not to field it. Fortuitous bounces? Yes you get them a lot when you have a good punter and use him in the right circumstances. PCC was beatable and Parkland made it easier for them. Cross was not near 100%, I'll give them that, but boneheaded decisions by an experience and accomplished coaching staff in a state final is inexcusable. All year and frankly every year, you see these brilliant X's and O's coaches (I really do mean that, these are smart football people that work hard, lead young men, etc. and I'm not taking it that away from them) but they lose common sense in the heat of battle. It's savant like it really is.
I will agree on the bonehead calls. Every member of that staff has been in state title games, some of them winning as head coaches. Specifically Morgans, Moncman and Comp. No excuse for it. It's going to be interesting in the next few months. Morgans is 71 years old. He is retired from teaching, and this was the team he was waiting on. I believe he retires, and Parkland hires Tim Moncman to replace him.
Moncman I will leave out, because his defense kept them in the game. PCC made three big plays on third and long, running the ball. Sometimes you guess wrong.
Offense is where I thought Parkland f'ed up. First off, they didn't give their RB the ball at all in the first half. NOT ONCE. They went for the kill shot far to often. I guess part of that was them seeing Cross being unable to be accurate short. His throws seemed to sail on him, when he planted and threw. His best throws were on the move, forward in the pocket, flipping the ball with momentum.
They also f'ed up punting the ball. The punter had a broken hand, I believe. He had a cast on his forearm and hand, which made him have to really take time and concentrate on catching and getting the ball ready to punt. I thought PCC was going to block at least one punt. Pooch kicking may have come into play there. I didn't like it at all because it exposed Cross' bad leg to worse injury, as it was his plant leg and foot.
As far as the "fortuitous" bounces. Yes, they were fortuitous. Those punts were what they were because of the wind. They were uncatchable by Parkland's returner, which caused them to hit the ground and bounce at least 20-30 yards to the good, for PCC. Sometimes things work out. It been said that sometimes it is better to be lucky then good. PCC was both.
PCC deserved the win, but as you said, Parkland's offensive staff helped them along. It was disappointing to true EPC fans. There is no love lost for them in the conference, but we all still wanted them win it.
