The state wrestling tournament starts today. I took a spin through the AAA bracket, and these are the notable football players who qualified.o
285 - Niko Camacho, Bethlehem Catholic (defensive tackle)
285 – Ike Schannauer, Wilson West Lawn (linebacker)
220 – Garrett Zobel, LaSalle (defensive tackle)
195 – Jake Jakobson, Stroudsburg (quarterback)
195 – Francis Duggan, North Allegheny (linebacker)
195 – Anthony Piscopo, LaSalle (defensive tackle)
182 – Nick Bonomo, Quakertown (wide receiver)
182 – Gregg Harvey, Boyertown (running back)
182 – Jayden Reyes, Dieruff (defensive end)
170 – Cole Zapf, Downingtown West (linebacker)
152 – Travis Stefanik, Nazareth (quarterback)
I’m sure there are more, but these are the names I recognized right away from the gridiron. Feels like there is a bigger crossover this year than there has been in the recent past.
Jakobson and Duggan are wrestling in quarterfinals today, and I think the winner is going to take the 195 bracket (both are nationally ranked). They’re excellent football players in addition to being state wrestling contenders, as Jakobson threw for over 2,000 yards this year and set Stroudsburg’s all time passing record and Duggan made 120 tackles and earned a place on my all state team as a linebacker.
Stefanik is also a national caliber wrestler (ranked 17th by Intermat) and put up video game numbers this fall at Nazareth, throwing for 2,355 yards and rushing for 1,075 with 36 total touchdowns. He started the season wrestling some 182 after football before making 152 for the first time at Districts.
Schannauer is the best football player of the bunch, a two-time all state middle linebacker for one of the best defenses in the state at Wilson.
Camacho, Jakobson, Duggan, and Stefanik are all potential champs (though Stefanik would need to beat Hayden Hidlay of Mifflin County, #2 nationally, to get to the final). I’d put money on those four plus Piscopo and Havey earning medals (with Zobel and Reyes having outside shots to get on the podium).
