Pettine Speaks Out on CBW Situation

Wow. There's a lot of "throw-em-under-the-bus-before-the-facts-are-in" going on in PA the last few years.

As always to the point. Look for the Intell. to criticize him in a editorial. Unlike the communities of East & South the West parents are cattle. The school board members representing West( one actually represents East but lives in West) will survive. The new hire will be little more then adult supervision.

Political correctness is going to kill this country. As Ed Rendell said, "It is the wussification of America!!"

The statement by the school board about signing the Code of Conduct is all smoke and mirrors. The Asst. Coaches were never asked to sign the form until this all came to light.

The school board overreacted without doing a proper investigation and in doing so ruined the reputation of the program and just as importantly the coaches. These coaches will have a hard time getting jobs else where with this season at West on their resumes.

I am entitled to my opinion..... and it is a somewhat informed opinion. Not sure of the details of this situation but where there is smoke there is usually fire. Dealt with Coach Pettine more than once in my life, in my opinion he has a "God-like" complex. Arrogant, j-off, a-hole AND a GREAT COACH. As far as his opinion on this I feel it is meaningless. Now all his acolytes can start attacking me.

I ran into Coach Pettine a few years back at a Lookaway golf outing. I told him that in '79 I played head up against Ivan Lesnik. We had a good laugh over how his star recruit was abnormally bigger than everyone else high school.

Lesnick...... I think went to Arizona or Arizona State . Never really became what we thought he would be.

Re: chuvalo

you are entitled to your opinion. you still living in Fishtown?

Re: chuvalo

Never lived in Fishtown. I live in Montgomery County Shoe---- what are you talking about??

Chuvalo,

I basically agree with the basis of your opinion. However, since I've never met Pettine,I won't comment on what he is like except in this case.

Instead of being a reconciler, a conciliator, a bridge between the parties, he goes on the attack and tries to divide instead of unite. He comes off as petty, a guy with an agenda. What about working behind the scene to help the situation instead of adding fuel to the fire. I can see from his attitude why the school board decided 15 years ago to basically de-emphasize the football team, the coaches thought they were bigger than the school, that everything was about them.

I respect Pettine for being a great teacher and educator for many years at the school. But in this case, he showed his bully side and I for one will take away some of that respect.

He threw gas on the fire with his op-ed. Some of the aspects of his VERY SUCCESSFUL reign as head football coach is why the administration is very hesitant to cut the football team a break-------- they are in fear of it regaining the overblown status/power it had. That being said, I will repeat, Pettine was the greatest coach in history. so please don't come at me with that.

I never said anything he wrote was incorrect, untrue or off base..... I am not privy to any of this info. He does know that no administration rebuttal editorial will be sent to the paper because it would be just what the coach wants. He already got the attention he sought. It is a shame they don't unload on him but it would be classless.

Football wasn't bigger than the school (East parents cried a lot) Pettine was bigger then the principal & superintendent which was a problem for petty bureaugrats. Happens at other schools to..

The school district does not want any of it's schools to have successful football teams. During the 80's and 90's more people turned out at school board meeting to complain about football then any other issue. Finishing 4-6 or 6-4 and making the playoffs occasionally is successful enough.

For what it is worth both the superintendent, Dave Weitzel and the former head coach, Brian Hensel played football at Archbishop Ryan. Weitzel was a three year starter at linebacker. I don't think there was any bias against the football team or the coach in the decisions made. Rather than an isolated incident, there apparently was a history of some issues with discipline on the team going back to the prior year. Not sure if it is the same in public high schools but when I played the head coach would make you pay the price for getting out of line whether in football situations or not. I know Weitzel played for John Quinn, a great man and coach. Not sure if Hensel did also.

This is the John Quinn who played at Cardinal Doughtery, Notre Dame. Coached at Cardinal Doughtery, head coach at Ryan for three separate terms, head coach at North Catholic, Conwell-Egan and came back to help out Glen Galeone at Ryan. He passed away in September 2013. Don't recall him helping out at CB East.

chuvalo, I'd like to know what fire you're referring to in this case? I am very sure of all the details and it is very clear that the Super. and the district made a mistake and pulled the trigger before all the facts were clear. And, as a result there are a lot of reputations that have been smeared.

I have said before I do not know the details of the incident. I do know ,unless newspaper reports are wrong, that things happened inside or on school property that should not have happened. I feel Pettine grandstanding in the local paper accomplishes nothing to help the situation. Time will tell what his "manifesto" brings about. P.S. He has been out of the game for a long time now and perhaps the current coaches, players or parents should go to the extent of writing an editorial in the paper. No matter how much of a reputation he has in the area, any and all information Coach Pettine used in his editorial is second hand hear-say. I am pretty sure he wasn't there.
