When Stover scored the 43 yard TD on the opening drive of the second half, I thought Parkland was in major trouble. Upper Dublin scored right before half and had all of the momentum. Parkland instead drove the ball 83 yards for a TD to answer, highlighted by a 21 yard catch and run by Zach Bross on 3rd and 9, a 12 yard slant to Yeboah on 3rd and 9, a 22 yard catch and run again by Bross on 4th and 5, then back-to-back wildcat runs by Ridgway in the red zone, capped by a 10 yard TD.
Almost bigger than that drive, Parkland forced a three and out immediately after getting a big sack on second down to put Upper Dublin behind the chains. That's where it really felt like the momentum changed. The next Parkland drive only resulted in a pair of 1st downs, and they pooch punted with Cross from the Upper Dublin 45. On the ensuing drive, Stover threw a pick to Yeboah near midfield. It looked like he got hit as he threw, the ball kind of fluttered out, and Yeboah went up and got it in jump ball with the receiver. On the next drive, Yeboah made a ridiculous catch in traffic for a 15 yard gain, and Cross hit Bross down the sideline, dropping the ball in between the corner and safety to get the ball down to the 11. On the final play of the third quarter, Erik DiGiralomo scored a 5 yard touchdown where he ran into the pile at the three, then the entire pile moved into the end zone, 21-14 Trojans.
On the opening drive of the 4th quarter, Parkland forced Stover into an intentional grounding, then sacked him on third down at the five yard line. The snap on the punt rolled through the punter's legs for a safety. Upper Dublin made a great call with an onside kick on the ensuing free kick, and the kicker put it exactly where he wanted to. But the Upper Dublin player was juggling the recover as he went out of bounds and never had possession. On Parkland's first play from the UD 48, Yeboah ran a hitch and go, with the defender biting hard on the fake, and Cross hit him for an easy TD to essentially put the game away.
Yeboah played the best game I've seen him play. He finished with five catches for 107 yards and a TD, had the interception, and laid at least two vicious (legal) hits on Upper Dublin receivers. It was a big time performance on both sides of the ball, particularly with Cross limited. Part of the reason he could be so effective as a receiver was that Bross was making Upper Dublin pay for directing so much attention towards Yeboah. Bross caught four passes for 80 yards, and the 6'4 junior took advantage of the smaller Upper Dublin defensive backs.
Cross was clearly limited by his knee injury. The Morning Call and fbfan1225 both are saying he got hurt on the last play of OT, i thought at the end of regulation he came off of the field very gingerly after taking three huge shots inside the 10 before their field goal. If you remember his INT at the end of regulation, he looked awful on the return, limping badly and trying not to take a hit unnecessarily. He was not able to run much, they tried a couple designed QB runs early with no success, and when he scrambled, there wasn't a lot of burst. He also didn't play a snap of defense. But throwing the ball, the knee didn't seem to both her him. He was 16-25 for 241 yards and a TD, with a number of monster throws on third and fourth downs. He certainly adds a dimension in the run game normally, but he is very capable as a drop back quarterback. But if they're going to have a shot next weekend, he'll need to be feeling much better to go against the PCC defense (and Parkland's basketball coach must be pulling his hair out, he's already playing without three starters for an extra week, and now his reigning conference player of the year point guard looks like he has a knee injury; the price to pay for having great athletes).
Parkland didn't run the ball particularly well with Cross limited (he carried it 7 times for 17 yards), but got something going with Ridgway in the wildcat, carrying ten times for 44 yards, and some of those carries were just plows into the line at the end of the game to keep the clock running. DiGiralomo ran for 58 yards and two TDs, but needed 17 carries to do it.
Stover was a monster, going 21-36 for 211 yards and a TD. Parkland's defensive front was getting pressure on almost every play, and most of those yards came under duress with him scrambling to buy time. He keeps his eyes downfield really well as he's running, and a lot of his big completions were with receivers coming back to the ball while he was being flushed out of the pocket. However, Stover had a 43 yard TD run, on Upper Dublin's other 25 carries they had -2 yards. Kaleif Lee and Stacy Gardner combined to gain one yard on the afternoon, after running for over 1,600 coming into today.. Stover carried nine times for 27 yards, meaning he ran for -16 yards on carries other than the touchdown. You have to be able to run the ball in December, and Parkland's run defense has been the driving force behind their winning streak and run to the state final.
This is Parkland's third trip to Hershey, second under head coach Jim Morgans (and Morgans fourth in an awesome career). It's D11's sixth in 4A since 2002, after not going at all from 1988-2001 in the highest classification.
