In probably the best game by state rankings this weekend, top ranked North Schuylkill pounded #4 Notre Dame 42-21, thanks to 366 rushing yards and six forced fumbles. The Spartans went up 35-7 before taking their foot off of the gas. Josh Chowansky ran for 163 yards and two scores, while Jake Hull threw for 186 yards and ran for 106. This is NS’s third straight win over ND, including a thrashing with over 400 yards rushing in the D11 title game last year. NS has done nothing to dissuade me from them being the favorites in 3A.

The bigger news locally is Collin Quintana got knocked out in the fourth quarter and spent the rest of the game on crutches. Losing an all state quarterback at this point in the season would be devastating for Notre Dame’s playoff hopes.

Rover, do you have any insight on a potential match-up with Central Valley? CV crushing inferior opponents in 2021, has one quality win vs Aliquippa with Avonworth in two weeks.

I may be biased being a western pa guy but I feel like it's hard to pick against CV in 3A. I also think 3A is the most wide opening classification right now.

It’s tough to tell with North Schuylkill not playing outside of D11 last year due to the pandemic, but they bring back the entire team. They’re physical as hell, have a couple FCS caliber athletes at running back, slot back, and QB, have some bulk on the offensive line. They’re a classic good coal region football team, they’ll be able to out execute and out physical good teams. That’s certainly the case with ND - the Crusaders have a really good quarterback, a wide open offense, and real speed at receiver, and North Schuylkill just punches them in the mouth. What is Central Valley like, I pretty much just know they’re good.

I haven’t seen them play a bunch, but North Schuylkill reminds me of the Selinsgrove team that won 3A in 2009 (beat the Nosovitch ACC team in quarters the year before they won states).

Unfortunately I don't follow them closely since I'm in District 1. CV 12-0 state champs last year, closest game was title tilt vs Wyomissing 35-21. One close game this year 21-12 over Aliquippa. They have a dynamic senior RB Landon Alexander. Think I heard they had a QB injury at some point, but don't know the status. Definitely looks like a nice group of teams in 3A.

Rover, how's the Qb?

I’m assuming you mean Quintano? The only thing I know is he was on crutches in the second half last week, I haven’t heard an injury update, but he’s a Villanova baseball commit, so I would assume he and his future coaches will want him to be cautious on his return.

Central valley is one of the best teams in the wpial no matter the classification. They have plenty of talent too. Lineman Sean Fitzsimmons is a Pitt recruit while Landon Alexander is the best running back in the wpial. Matt Merritt is an all conference linebacker. They already have a big win over a very good Aliquippa team. They are my pick to take gold at Hersey once again.

Ditto Hausemann, Wyomissing is looking good too. But like last year, I think passing is their Achilles Heel. Very legit OL and backs, decent speed throughout. Maybe they meet again.
