NJ high school transfer rule, newly passed

PA should follow along. Transfers in HS sports is at an all time high right now.

Saw this article posted on Ted Silary's site via the Rally page. Thought would make for some interesting discussion..

The change seems like an over-reaction to me. The rule change is painted with a VERY broad brush. Too many legitimate reasons for changing schools are potentially dismissed, without so much as an appeal. IMO, the NJSIAA is implicitly acknowledging that they refuse to investigate the underlying reason(s) for transfers.

Amen franklinfield. Seems hurried and shallow.

Agreed that PA should follow suit. It addresses both recruiting and transfers (wink wink) of which many are moving for sports related reasons.
Wouldn't most if not all of us pray for a transfer to go through that might benefit a athletically gifted child, hoping for a full or partial ride, with the bottom line being the projected college degree, not athletics?

Worked for udinski. Congrats to him and johns on big 33 invite. Don't think this 30 day sit out period will change much but like the part ie after first scrimmage part. Stalk, I have to respectfully agree to disagree on above article/link. In this day and age with all the self promotion, social media, YouTube highlights etc, from camps, combines, travel, AAU, individual training with elite guys and on and on. If your good they will find you. If you're good and overlooked there are many ways to get seen, IMO. Was it really necessary, now this is hoops related that Lamar Stevens needed to transfer 3 times to end up at PSU, does cam reddish need to be at his third HS, westtown now ,with addresses that says he lives in Norristown, haverford etc, I don't think so but what the hell do I know. Hope everyone had a great new year!

Reddish has only been to two schools, and he left Haverford because the coach that recruited him left. But I think for sports like football, the 30 day sit out period is huge, unlike other sports the 10-15 games that students potentially play is all they have to show schools their skill set, and for students looking to play at the next level missing 2-3 games could be huge for a student. Yes there are 7v7 tournaments and camps but recruiters will tell you that they don't put as much stock into those things as they do actual games.

Thanks for correction, I forgot he has reclassified, once or twice, probably was just an eight grader at school prior to haverford school. I guess the statement that the coach who recruited him left is all that needs to be said. When high schools/ programs put this much emphasis on winning, when offers come now to 6th graders, what the hell are we doing and where are we headed?

Isn't this a good thing? Now kids like Zain Retherford won't lose an entire season because of the so-called "adults". No more b1t¢hy coaches and administrators sticking it to a kid (more likely his dad) on his way out the door. No more crooked PIAA district panel clown shows. In PA I see them trying to NOT do this...and retain their little fiefdoms.

I think the whole point of the rule is that's it's clearly defined , unlike anything we have in Pennsylvania. So a kid ( or his parents ) know up front the price to pay for transferring. Is my overall school experience going to be severely effected by me missing 30 days of sports ? If the answer is yes , then the student should think twice about transferring. If the answer is no, then transfer. Remember , that despite what we all know , no one is supposed to transfer for athletic purposes.

Not a good thing to the kids whose residency changes were created by a parent's death, divorce or loss of employment. My point is, it's too broad and may adversely affect kids who didn't transfer for athletic reasons.

Not really sure it will have as big an impact especially in District 12 because the ones who are getting tranfers in will be in the playoffs either way because they don't use the power point system the other districts use.

How does it adversely affect the kids you mention?

With no appeals, the kids sitting 30 days or whatever the mandatory term will be are swept up in the wide net cast by the rule. Imagine a kid who just lost his parent, had to move to another district, and is then told he has to sit out for a pre-determined time during a season just because the NJSIAA won't provide him with an opportunity to explain why he had to move.

I love people who preach freedom, decry bureaucracy and then turn around and become high school sports communists. We had a great season this year. Leave it alone, we will have another fun season next year.

Go to school wherever you want but extras such as sports are at your home school. This allows for parent choice for "educational" reasons but sports which is not part of academics you have to do them at your home school

Yes, you know best for everyone Sam. Do me a favor, read that post out loud to someone so you can hear just how dumb you sound.

Sammy...you are too smart to throw that out there. We both know some families do this for the wrong reasons. And likewise some great life lessons are learned along the way.
For every success story there are 5 failures that we never hear about. The system is not broke, I feel it should be left alone. We want to do what...follow the lead of a state that has 100 state football champions, and whose playoffs by and large are ignored. We are fine. Not perfect...but here in Pa we will make out just fine.

Ok I agree with you to a certain point. I will say following NJ is never a great idea and PA is doing ok with it's educational system overall even though there is an anti-public school vibe going on right now but PA public schools are solid. Now to the athletic side of things, there is no doubt that there is some poaching going on how much is still up for debate but it is going on and in some instances it is creating a stacked deck for some teams. We have open enrollment in the county I teach and coach in here in North Carolina and although NC is not PA I can see this happening in PA if certain people get enough power. Anyway what has been created down here due to "Choice Transfer" is a severe case of the haves and have not's, not only in academics but athletics.

I thought you were NC...so you have seen the complete crazy opposite end of the spectrum. The variations of the tax bases here just don't seem to me to make complete open enrollment fit. If that were the case what we think is bad now would only get worse.
I can't even imagine what would happen on the pub side if open enrollment occurred. We already have on the 6A level what, four, five teams that have a chance. That goes to three in my opinion if open occurred. Like I said, on the whole the status quo ain't perfect, but I say live and let live.

I am a huge fan on how PA does athletics I hope that the powers at be do not ruin it but take it from me it does not take that much to send things off into chaos. If you get enough parents willing to sue the PIAA for transfer rules you can bet that something like open enrollment could happen

At least with the NJSIAA they won't lose a whole season like they can in PA.
