As the resident Ohio State alum on these board (ducks) - Ohio State hasn't run the spread quarterback run offense since Meyer retired. Day is an NFL guy pre-Ohio State and they've really factored the QB run out in a lot of instances. Dwayne Haskins cannot run at all, but could really spin it (in college) and threw for 5,000 yards and 50 TDs. Fields is obviously a freak athlete, but they very rarely ask him to run the ball on designed runs or in zone read. He has the legs to scramble and extend plays/take off when things break down, but they really don't use him as a runner to the extent they could. If Urban Meyer was still running the show, Fields would carry the ball 25 times a game, but that's just not how the offense works.
Day seems to really like McCord. JJ McCarthy from the Chicago area is another five star who I think is rated ahead of McCord in a lot of national rankings, who really wanted to go to Ohio State, but the Buckeyes would not take a commitment from him because Day was after McCord (and obviously got him). They way they have stacked receivers in recruiting, I think they're looking for guys who can really throw it and distribute to the insane athletes they're stacking up on the perimeter. McCord is enrolling early and with COVID having cancelled last spring and made this fall so bizarre, the two freshman quarterbacks OSU has on its roster have nowhere near the reps an experience they would normally get that would put them far ahead of McCord going into spring ball. It would not shock me at all if he wins the job to replace Fields.
The real thing to watch with McCord will be what happens with Quinn Ewers. The top overall junior and getting hyped as the best QB recruit since Lawrence, Ewers committed to Ohio State this fall and would seemingly be huge competition right behind McCord.
