16 Central York 6A 8-1

There was a lot of D1 talent on the field last week in York with Dallastown paying a visit to rival Central York for a good one. Central’s primary is Qb Cade Pribula who led them to a 35-14 lead with 9-plus left in the 4th quarter. This, on the strength of three 2nd half touchdowns following a 14-14 stalemate at the half. Pribula had it going completing 15 of 24 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns. He also kept Dallastown off balance with 74 yards rushing on 20 carries. But Dtown has weapons of their own, particularly in Nyzair Smith, who brought the Wildcats back with 48 carries (!) netting 304 yards, giving him 1924 for the year. This was essentially a playoff game with both coming in 4-1. And they played like it with Central York getting 384 yards of offense to Dtown’s 386. A critical 4th down conversion deep in the 4th quarter preserved it as Central (4th seed) held on for a 35-28 win. York High (4th seed) is next, downtown at their place.
17 Governor Mifflin 5A 6-3
The Mustangs moved up three notches with another dominant win, their 6th straight, this time against a tough Exeter Township team, 34-17. The schedule before Exeter was not challenging, but Exeter is a quality opponent with losses at Spring Ford (7-2) in overtime and at 7-2 Conrad Weiser 23-12. During the streak, Governor Mifflin (7th seed, 5A) outscored opponents an average of 37-10, staying unbeaten in Berk-1 action and tied with Conrad Weiser. That will change Friday when the Scouts who hold the 4th seed in 4A visit them Friday to decide the issue.
18 York (William Penn) 5A 8-1
York went to Manchester last week where they took on the humiliated Bobcats who were just pummeled the week before by Central York 44-7. This was a close call for York who barely dodged a bullet from a spirited Northeastern team. Northeastern, who have a history of getting up for people, or others not taking them seriously, gave the Bearcats fits before going down 32-28. York is bigger, faster and far more athletic than the younger Cats but you can’t measure heart. Dayjure Stewart was special for the Bearcats gaining 392 yards on 29 carries. At 5-11, 200 pounds he’s big, powerful and fast, holding the All Time rushing record at York with 3057 yards. He’s at 1580 this year. The win set up a showdown at home Friday against rival Central York.
19 Conrad Weiser 4A 7-2,
Conrad Weiser advanced in the rankings when higher rated teams including Susquehanna Township and Dallastown lost and by routing Muhlenberg 48-14. Poor Muhlenberg at 0-9 is trying to prevent their first winless season since 1977. They get a chance at 1-8 Reading Friday. Meanwhile, Weiser goes for their first title since 2009 in a showdown at Governor Mifflin where they are tied atop the Berks Section-1. The Scout were routed last year 51-0 by the great Mustang team that lost in the quarterfinal to Manheim Central 30-29. Weiser currently has the 4th seed while Mifflin has the 7th.
20 Dallastown 6A 5-4,
Dallastown lost to Central York last week (See Central York above) in a showdown between Section co-leaders who were deadlocked with Red Lion and York in the York-Adams League. Running back Nyzair Smith was incredible, rushing for 304 yards on a mind blowing 48 carries. He and Dayjure Stewart of York are thought to be the top running backs in the league. Smith has rushed for 1924 carries this year on 232 carries. Another critical showdown awaits the Wildcats this weekend with Red Lion (6th seed) visiting. Dtown is currently on a bubble of sorts with the 9th seed in an 8 team playoff field.
21 Mount Carmel 2A 7-2
Mount Carmel crushed Bloomsburg with Tommy Reisling completing 13 of 16 tosses for 214 yards and 2 touchdowns. John Ayres rushed for 102 yards with 2 scores as the Red Tornados rolled out 518 total yards of offense, 308 rushing. And the D was dominant holding the Panthers to 70 total yards in a 53-0 rout. They’ve losses this year came against some of the top teams in the state, losing to Southern Columbia (9-0) 41-7 and North Schuylkill (8-1, 3A, D-11) who, along with Tamaqua (8-1) and Jim Thorpe (8-1) are the three of the top 3A teams in District-11 and the state. MCA will be a force in the postseason. They close out at home against Shamokin (5-4).
22 Milton Hershey 4A 8-1
Milton Hershey defeated Camp Hill 35-14 to remain in a tie with Palmyra (5-1, 8-1) in the Mid Penn-Capital, a game behind Middletown. They finish at Steelton Highspire (2-5, 4-5) who are having a rare off year after advancing to the 1A semifinal last year with an 11-3 team that lost to Homer Center (13-2) 20-14. Milton Hershey can get a share of the title if Palmyra upsets Middletown. Don’t hold your breath there. But first they have to get past an explosive Steel High group that averages 40ppg, intent on salvaging a .500 season at Cottage Hill in what could be their last game of the year. The Rollers currently have the last of 4 seeds in 2A while MH holds the 2nd seed in 4A.
23 Exeter Township 5A 5-4
Bryce Stubler hit Michael Franks on a 67 yard touchdown strike on the first play from scrimmage to set the tone as Governor Mifflin had their way with the Eagles, defeating them in a key Berks League matchup 34-17. While Mustang quarterback Kolbie Reeser was throwing 3 touchdowns and rushing for another, the defense was making life miserable for Exeter’s Qb Kolby Haag, sacking him 6 times. So here’s Governor Mifflin again, dominating the league as always, even in a major rebuild after starting the year 0-3. Heck of a program. The loss was a blow to Exeter who dropped to 16th in a playoff field of 14. But with Dover and Northeastern above them at 14 and 15, who knows. They close at Boone (5-4. 17th seed) who won’t go down easy with an outside shot at the playoffs.
24 Hempfield 6A 5-4 There is just no quit in these guys who after a 1-3 start, won 4 of their last 5 including a competitive loss to Wilson. Last week saw them defeat Penn Manor 49-14. It seems the versatile quarterback are taking over if District-3 is any indication with Colin Peters showing his duality, completing 9 of 14 passes for 164 yards and a score, then rushing for 84 yards on 12 carries for another touchdown. Who needs running backs? Good question although Hempfield is glad Matt Hueston returned to the game after a two year absence to rush for 116 yards and 3 touchdowns. Darren Ressler snagged 3 passes for 118 yards and a score as the Black Knights out-yardaged the Comets 428 to 226. This Friday sees Warwick coming to Landisville where things could get interesting with Hempfield holding the 8th and final seed and the Warriors trying to hold onto a piece of the LL and the 6th seed for the 5A tournament.
25 Shippensburg 5A 8-1
How about these Hounds tearing through the Mid Penn-Colonial with only a 26-21 loss at Mifflin County marring their record. Mifflin County (5-4) hasn’t lost since beating them with both tied at 4-1 in the Colonial. Shippensburg’s D continues setting the tone beating Red Land 37-0 at West Shore Stadium last week for their second shutout in a row. Adam Houser was again awesome, rushing for 278 yards and 3 Tds while freshman Anthony Smith at 6-4 240 is starting to make an impression to put it mildly, getting 6 sacks! And they’re looking good with the 3rd seed closing at Big Spring (3-6) Friday.
26 Susquehanna Township 4A 6-3
Susquehanna Township got their bell rung last week when Cedar Cliff shut them out at home 30-0. They were never in this one, down 20-0 at the half with the Colts dominant statistically, allowing just 8-1st downs and 153 total yards. Running back Troy Ambush was himself ambushed, held to 64 yards on 18 attempts as was quarterback Rahsaan Carlton who completed 10 of 19 for a mere 90 yards. After reeling off 6 straight wins, Hanna was thought to be the last road block for the Colts’ quest to win the MP-Capital. So much for that theory. They move on to play rival Bishop McDevitt with the 5 seed in a field of 14.
27 Lancaster Catholic 3A 9-0
Lancaster got a scare from Donegal (5-3, 5-4) overcoming a 14-13 half time deficit to prevail in a defensive struggle at Mt. Joy 22-14. The D was led by DT EJ Pratt 6-1 285, Linebackers Alex Cruz 6-1 220 and Charlie Skehan 6-1 230, and Andrew Miklos 6-4 225, who lines up on both sides of the ball at just about every position. Malkam Lawrence led all rushers with 124 yards for a score with Jeff Harley adding 68 on 12 carries with two scores. They like to run but can toss it with Gavin Sullivan completing 4 of 4 passes for 54 yards while rushing for 80 more on 15 carries. The defense was stellar, as it has been all year holding Donegal to 178 total yards of offense and 12-1st downs. Donegal (11th 4A) can be a tough hombre to bring down, having lost at Elco (7-2, 8th, 3A) 39-33 in ot followed by the big win against Annville Cleona (6-3, 4th, 3A) the following week. The big news for LC is they’ve secured the LL-3 crown in Coach Todd Mealy’s first year. They close out at Pequea Valley (pronounced Peck way) who is winless at 0-9.
28 Hollidaysburg 5A 5-4
The Golden Tigers jumped Palmyra in the rankings with a 50-16 win over Dubois (3-6) while Palmyra was struggling with winless Trinity. How about Hollidaysburg, tearing through District-6 with road wins at Altoona and Mifflin County before losing to State College, also of District-6, 49-22. State was the beginning of a 4 game slide before winning their last 3 including two more District-6 teams (Central Mountain, Tyrone), making them something of power in the area behind SC. But they had no trouble with the Beavers, rushing for 348 yards while holding them to 283 total yards. Brady Walters continues as one of the more entertaining quarterbacks in central Pennsylvania, completing 7 of 13 passes for 86 yards, then running for another 130 yards on 10 carries. To date he has 1380 yards passing and 623 rushing, making them a dangerous opponent. They’re at 3-6 Martinsburg Central then it looks like Brashear of District-8 in the playoffs.
29 Palmyra 5A 8-1
Palmyra needed a Caleb Hawkins score on a 10 yard run with 1:18 left in the game to edge winless Trinity 14-13. A missed extra point summarized the Shamrock’s growing pains, struggling through the season with a young but talented group. Bur winless teams well coached can play with a desperation Palmyra should have prepared for. Apart from competitive games that characterize the Mid Penn Conference regardless of the division, Commonwealth, Capital, Colonial or Keystone, members often take on a wicked non-conference schedule as prep for upcoming games. That’s the case with Trinity who scheduled Delone (8-1), York Catholic (9-0) and Wyomissing (8-1) to open the season before the conference opener with Steel High! Bottom line, keep your eye on the Rocks next season! Palmyra (5-1, 8th seed) moves on to play MP-Capital leader Middletown (6-0, 2nd seed, 3A), with little momentum coming off Trinity and the home loss to Milton Hershey the week before. But it was a war last year in Palmyra won by Middletown 17-10 so let’s see how it goes.
30 Gettysburg 4A 7-2,
Gettysburg broke into the rankings for the first time this season after winning their last 6 games and defeating then co-leader Dover convincingly at their place 28-7. Nice turnaround after the 1-2 start that included a wild 48-35 loss at McDevitt in Harrisburg. The win against Dover clinched the York Adams-2 division title for the Warriors, their first in 11 years going back to the Mid Penn-Colonial days. But it wasn’t until the 3rd quarter that they got it together after falling behind 7-2 at the half. Until that point, Dover bottled up G-burg’s star running back Ammon Robinson, holding him to 26 yards!? That all changed in the 3rd quarter when he broke loose for 131 yards, allowing the Warriors to roll. Greencastle Antrim (3-7, MP-Colonial) is next, coming in on a 6 game losing streak where the Warriors hope to improve on their 6 seed, behind Susquehanna Township and ahead of West Perry. Hey, maybe they get another shot at McDevitt who holds the 1 seed!

Ligonier Valley D6 2A 9-0,
The Appalachian Bowl was renewed in 2016 (ran from 1973 to 1993) where the West-PAC champ plays the Heritage Conference champ. This year’s event brings together undefeated Heritage champ Ligonier Valley v Shade (9-0, D-5, 1A) of the West-PAC at Windber Stadium Saturday evening. LV is on a run winning 36 of their last 38 with 2 straight District-6 2A titles and 3 conference crowns. Qb John Caldwell is the man completing 70% for 1938 yards with a 29/4 ratio. They score 51ppg and allow 11. Hard finding a weakness. But Shade has one of the top dual threats in the state in Brady Fyfe with 2754 passing yards (64%, 38/4 ratio) and 1020 rush yards. Vet team with 18 back from last year averaging 43ppg, allowing 20. Stop Fyfe and you stop Shade, and LV has a wicked D.
Richland Township D6 2A 9-0, Richland hasn’t had a challenge all year but are at Chestnut Ridge Friday who is coming off their first loss of the year. Clinched Laurel Highlands.
Chestnut Ridge D5 2A 8-1, Sustained first loss of the year losing to Bishop Guilfoyle 12-0.
