16 York (William Penn) 5A 9-1

York throttled Central York 54-14 with Central’s quarterback Cade Pribula going down early, relegated to the sidelines with his arm in a sling. Dayjure Stewart rushed for 270 yards with 4 touchdowns while Seth Bernstein passed for 186 yards with 2 touchdown passes. The Bearcats are something when they get it going amassing 568 total yards of offense. Like Manheim Township and Harrisburg, York has done an awesome rebuilding job after severe graduation losses. Former Head Coach Matt Ortega now at Coatesville would be proud. He guided them to a 37-18 record from 2004 through 2008. The Bearcats have the 6th seed and will open at home Friday against Northern (6-4, 11th seed). The Polar Bears haven’t seen this kind of speed since losing 2 months ago at home to Middletown.

17 Conrad Weiser 4A 8-2

Conrad Weiser slugged it out with Governor Mifflin in Shillington gaining a 17-7 win in a mild upset that also clinched the Berks Inter County Section-1 title, their first since 2009. Qb Alex MacKenzie rushed for 146 yards while the Scouts’ defense held Governor Mifflin to 204 total yards. What a great way to enter the post season, on a 3 game winning streak and beating Governor Mifflin to win the Berks-1. Topping that off, they get a bye with their 4th seed, prepping for Gettysburg (8-2, 5th seed) who also got a bye in the 10 team, 4A District-3 field.

18 Governor Mifflin 5A 6-4

Governor Mifflin held Conrad Weiser to 214 total yards of offense but it wasn’t enough as the Scouts held them to 204 total yards, denying their 9th Berks-1 title in the last 10 years. Sophomore Kolbie Reeser was picked off 3 times and sacked 4 times while freshman Nick Singleton was knocked out of the game. Weiser has some big boys up front that will bang with you! Mifflin reeled off 6 straight wins before Weiser and will travel to Elizabethtown as a 9th seed to play 8th seeded Etown and quarterback Cole Patrick who can sling it! The winner advances to play Manheim Central.

19 Central York 6A 8-2

The loss of Qb Cade Pribula early in the 1st quarter doomed the Panthers taking on the high powered attack of York High who routed them 54-14. The loss dropped them out of a tri-tie for 1st with Red Lion and York for York Adams-1 honors. Except for the inexplicable 56-28 breakdown against Red Lion almost 2 months ago they’ve been a force. But not without Cade Pribula as evidenced in last week’s 54-14 blowout at York where he was last seen on the sideline in a sling early in the 1st quarter. But this is still a great turnaround from last year’s 6-4 season. They’ll definitely need him and then some at Central Dauphin (7-3, 3rd seeded) Friday to advance with their 6 seed.

20 Dallastown 6A 5-5

Back-to-back 7 point losses to Central York and Red Lion dropped the Wildcats to 3rd place in the York Adams-1 and out of the 6A playoffs with the 9th seed in an 8 team field. Their great back Nyzair Smith finished the season with 1986 yards, 14 shy of 2000 after being shut down to 68 yards at home by Red Lion in a 17-10 season ending loss. It was still a decent season, rebuilding on the back of Nyzair Smith with others coming through to field a competitive team.

21 Milton Hershey 4A 9-1

Milton Hershey secured the 3rd seed for Districts routing free falling Steelton Highspire (1A, 4-6) 55-13. The Rollers lost 5 of their last 6 while the Spartans turned things around. Last year’s team went 5-5, averaging 23ppg and allowing 20, whereas this year’s squad improved to 34ppg offensively, supported by a defense allowing 13ppg. This provided for road wins at Annville Cleona, Susquehanna Township, Palmyra and Steelton, and a competitive 32-21 loss to Middletown. For Districts, they have a bye then play Susquehanna Township (6-4, 6th seed) in a rematch of a game won Aug 31st at Hanna 14-8.

22 Mount Carmel 2A 8-2

Mount Carmel enters the postseason with the 2nd seed in the District-4 tournament with good momentum after defeating Shamokin 28-7 for their 5th straight win. They’re aligned with North Penn/Bloomsburg (2nd round) suggesting they should advance to the district final to rematch with Southern Columbia. They open Friday against 7th seeded Towanda (4-6). The Knights suffered competitive losses to 1A powers Canton (9-1) 25-21 and Muncy (7-3) 15-14 early in the year, then faded moving up in classification, losing to Wellsboro (8-2, 2A) 30-3, North Penn Mansfield (2A, 8-2) 38-6 and 3A power Montoursville (8-2) 49-13. Barring losses to powerhouses Southern Columbia (10-0, 2A) 41-7 and North Schuylkill (9-2, 3A) 33-21, you’d hear much more about MCA who has a powerful team themselves, scoring 36ppg and allowing 13. It’s tough playing in the shadow of SCA but they should rout Towanda then see how things go against North Penn, barring the unlikelihood of NP being upset by Bloomsburg.

23 Exeter Township 5A 6-4

Exeter ended the regular season defeating Boone 28-14 to secure the 13th seed in a field of 14 while winning their 3rd game in the last 4. Like many teams in the district, they’ve played a diverse, inter conference, inter county schedule that brought most of the area’s better teams together in some great match ups. But it’s going to be tough going to 4th seeded Cedar Cliff who are one of the hottest teams in the district with a 7 game winning streak fortified by wins against Bishop McDevitt and Governor Mifflin. Exeter has some skill people that can hurt you but the Colts have more, and are home.

24 Shippensburg 5A 9-1

Adam Houser rushed for 266 yards as the Greyhounds swamped Big Spring 53-13, clinching a tie with Mifflin County atop the Mid Penn-Colonial. Things will ratchet up for the Hounds now against a quality slate of 5A teams like Warwick, Cedar Cliff, York High, Manheim Central and Cocalico. That’s a real upgrade from Northern, Waynesboro, West Perry and Bermudian Springs. But they have Adam Houser who may surprise, rushing for 1782 yards. If they can get a little more out of the sophomore under center with their veteran line, they could do damage. They open Friday at home with the 3 seed against 14th seeded Northeastern of the York Adams-1. The Bobcats have been anything but consistent, upsetting Red Lion 23-16 one week, then getting hammered at home by Central York 44-7, before nearly upsetting York High the following week, losing 32-28. Ship is better but the Bobcats are battle tested with nothing to lose.

25 Lancaster Catholic 3A 10-0

Lancaster Catholic secured the top seed with a 37-0 win over winless Pequea Valley and clinched the Lancaster Lebanon-Section 3 title. They’re having a great year under the guidance of one of the great young coaches in the state, going undefeated in his first year after a 5-5 season last year. Coach Todd Mealy will shine as predictably and consistently at LC as we all knew Matt Ortega would with his move to Coatesville from York High. Coach Ortega may have been a surprise to District-1 but not to those who followed him in District-3. With Coach Mealy heading the Lancaster Catholic program, look for the Crusaders to rejoin the top 4A teams in the district (state titles 2009, 15-1 and 2011, 16-0) in a few years knowing what he did at Penn Manor in Section 1, going 56-35 from 2007 to 2014. LC will play the winner of Annville Cleona (7-3, 4th seed) verses Bermudian Springs (7-3, 5th seed).

26 Hollidaysburg 5A 6-4

Hollidaysburg overwhelmed Central with 252 yards rushing and a 328 to 118 total yardage advantage for a 42-0 win against the Scarlet Dragons of Martinsburg. Dual threat Qb Brady Walters rushed for 4 touchdowns on 90 yards while completing 5of 8 passes for 76 yards. They’ll play the Brashear Bulls (2-5, Pitt City League, D8) Friday at St. Francis in the District-6/8/10 Bracket. A win advances them to whoever emerges from the great rematch between General McLane (7-2) and Oil City (9-1)\. OC’s only loss was to the Lancers at their place in Edinboro, where they will rematch. The Oilers have a great back in Christian Cole (6-1, 210) who has 2912 yards rushing this year.

27 Gettysburg 4A 8-2

Gettysburg won their 7th straight defeating Greencastle Antrim 50-0 to secure the York Adams-2 title and the 5th seed in districts, earning a bye for the 1st round. The Warriors are a quick but light attack featuring real speed. Ask McDevitt who beat them but were threatened in a 48-35 win in Harrisburg. They can fly but have difficulty with people like McDevitt who can pound. They are 4th in the entire York Adams League in scoring at 35ppg and defense at 14ppg. Following the bye week they get a tough draw traveling to 4th seeded Conrad Weiser Nov 9th as the Scouts are one of those teams that can pound you!

28 Hempfield 6A 5-5

Hempfield’s rocky season got another jolt, losing at home to powerful Manheim Township 48-13. But all is not lost as the tough schedule of Dallastown, Manheim Central, Central York, Warwick, Wilson and Manheim Township paid dividends, earning them the 8th and final seed in District-3’s 6A playoffs against top seeded Harrisburg. This one doesn’t look even a little like an upset as last year’s Governor Mifflin did with their weird Mid-Line Option. There, you sensed they had an outside shot. For those that saw the game or the video that’s still out there, it was no upset! But this one looks well out of reach for the Black Knights with their conventional approach. No fear tho, after playing Manheim Central, Township and Wilson. Just not enough of everything to keep up with a very talented offense that is more diverse than last year’s team.

29 Susquehanna Township 4A 6-4

Susquehanna Township got waffled by Bishop McDevitt 42-14 following their 30-0 loss to Cedar Cliff the week before to enter the postseason with zero momentum. But they do have the 6th seed that earned them a bye in Districts where they’ll play 3rd seeded Milton Hershey Nov 9th in a rematch. The Spartans edged Hanna 14-8 the second game of the year in Harrisburg so it could get interesting as paybacks are often an issue. But Milton Hershey has gotten so much better while Hanna may be used up after a strong run that saw them beat Conrad Weiser 19-6 a few weeks ago to extend the winning streak to 6 games before losing to McDevitt and Cedar Cliff in lopsided scores.

30 Elizabethtown 6-4 5A

The Etown Bears closed out the regular season by soundly defeating slumping Conestoga Valley 30-3 (lost last 4) to get their 4th win in the last 5 game. Cole Patrick stayed hot completing 19 of 29 passes for 228 yards and 2 touchdowns. The win secures the 8th seed in districts and their first playoff appearance since 2008. They’ll face 9th seeded Governor Mifflin (6-4) in Etown Friday. It will be interesting seeing how the Mustang’s handle Etown’s quarterback Cole Patrick who has a 60% completion rate, a 26/9 Td/Pick ratio while throwing for 2534 yards. That’s enough to keep you on your heels against the Bad News Bears who are 5-1 at home this year.
