16 Conrad Weiser 4A 8-2
Berks Inter County, Section-1 champ Conrad Weiser had a bye as the 4th seed after defeating preseason favorite Governor Mifflin at their place 17-7 to win the section title. The opponent this week is Gettysburg (8-2, 5th seed), the York Adams-2 winner who was also idle. Both bring excellent rushing attacks with quarterback Alex MacKenzie (6-0, 200, sr) throwing for 776 yards and leading the team in rushing with 618 yards. Gettysburg is led by running back Ammon Robinson (5-8, 165, sr) who holds the school record rushing for 1441 yards this season with 27 touchdowns. Both teams play solid defense allowing 14ppg with the Scouts scoring 32ppg while G-burg scores 39ppg a game. The game is in Robesonia, a few miles west of Reading where we’ll see how the Berks-1 champ stacks up against the York Adams-2 champ. Looks tight despite Weiser’s tougher schedule and home field advantage.
17 Governor Mifflin 5A 7-4
Governor Mifflin blasted Elizabethtown 30-0 at their place to advance in the District-3, 5A playoffs. Like many games Friday, this was played in the slop where Mifflin’s ground game dominated with 272 yards rushing. Their defense and the rain grounded E-town’s air attack, holding them to 32 yards through the air and 54 total yards in the game. Nick Singleton had 102 yards on 25 carries. They move on with their 9th seed to play top seeded Manheim Central who had a bye. The Mustangs have the horses but are far younger than the Barons. They are led by freshman running back Nick Singleton with 1186 yards and junior quarterback Kolbie Reeser who has 1362 yards passing. Remember after GM upset Harrisburg last year 26-14, an upset that reverberated across the state, they lost to Manheim Central 30-29 in a wild back and forth game with MC scoring late in the 4th to win it? That will give them a boost that likely won’t last the game.
18 Red Lion 6A 8-3
Red Lion was bombed again at Wilson losing 36-0 after losing to Wilson the year before at Gurski Stadium 42-7. Losses like this solidify the conference pecking orders in the district with the Mid Penn-Commonwealth atop the heap although the Lancaster Lebanon Section-1 has made inroads and clear challenges to that supremacy. Then comes the York Adams Division-1 with Red Lion, York High, Central York and Dallastown the primary movers and shakers, teams that rarely get past the first round and are often blown out like Red Lion and Central York last week. Still, it was a successful season for the Lions with a tie in the York Adams-Division-1 with York at 6-1 despite beating the Bearcats 21-20.
19 Central York 6A 8-3
6th seeded Central York was drubbed at 3rd seeded Central Dauphin last week, losing 49-21 in a game that wasn’t that close with the Rams opening up a 42-6 halftime lead! Nice little team Central York with a D1 quarterback in Cade Pribula throwing for 2768 yards and 31 touchdowns to a D1 talent like Taylor Wright-Rawls who caught 40 passes for 1127 yards. But it wasn’t enough against CD. That they still can’t advance in the postseason with that kind of talent is telling….and foreboding for next season.
20 Dallastown 6A 5-5
The Wildcats lost 2 games at the tail end of the season by 7 points each to Central York and Red Lion that knocked them out of the playoffs. Like Central York losing Qb Cade Pribula to Delaware, you have to wonder how D-town will perform next season without their record setting Nyzair Smith who finished with 1986 rush yards.
21 Milton Hershey 4A 9-1
Milton Hershey sat idle last week with the 3rd seed as did their opponent this week in Susquehanna Township who has the 6th seed. Susquehanna Township comes in with no momentum, losing their last 2 games to Cedar Cliff 30-0 and Bishop McDevitt 42-14. Meanwhile the Spartans are at home feeling good after winning their last 3 and having defeated Hanna way back on August 31st, 14-8. The winner advances to play the winner of Gettysburg-Conrad Weiser.
22 Mount Carmel 2A 9-2
Mount Carmel defeated Towanda (4-7, 7th seed) on the strength of their strong running attack on yet another rain soaked field last Friday where they thumped Towanda 41-6. This was total domination by the Red Tornadoes defense who build a 35-0 lead at the half, holding the Black Knights to 5 first downs and 67 yards rushing. MCA had 17 first downs and 334 yards rushing plus 38 passing to Towanda’s 105 total yards. They’re home again Friday with the 2-seed against North Penn-Mansfield (9-2, 3rd seed) who beat Bloomsburg (5-6, 6th seed) 16-6. NP-M (Northern Tier-Large School Div) is on a roll, winning 8 straight including a defeat of 1A power Canton (10-1, 1A, Top Seed), their first loss of the year, then beating Wellsboro (8-3, 2A, 4th seed) before avenging a week-3 loss to Bloomsburg last week, 16-6. Qb Bent Burleigh (6-2, 190, sr) at 1642yds, 63%, 17/4 ratio is nearing the 3000 career yard mark and may keep it competitive although Mount Carmel is much more, especially if there is weather to ground the Panthers. MCA can pound you all night behind strong offensive line play.
23 Lancaster Catholic 3A 10-0
Lancaster Catholic had a bye as the top seed and will play Bermudian Springs (8-3, 5th seed) who edged 4th seeded Annville Cleona (7-4) 14-7, scoring on a 9 yard run by quarterback Chase Dull with 7:45 left in the game. Ryan Hart led the Eagles with 108 yards on 16 carries as Bermudian dominated statistically, holding Annville to 34 total yards in the 2nd half. That’s been their strength this year in league losses to York Catholic (11-0) 10-7 and Delone Catholic (10-1) 17-7, allowing them to finish second in the York-Adams-3. Lancaster Catholic is the undefeated LL-3 champion who also have a strong defense allowing 8ppg against an offense scoring 36ppg. Schedule difficulty equals out, maybe a lean to Bermudian with the difference being personnel. Here, Lancaster Catholic excels, with Gavin Sullivan at quarterback throwing for 814 yards at 62% while rushing for 593 yards. Jeffrey Harley rushed for 834 yards with Malkam Lawrence at 511. Andrew Miklos has 389 yards on 19 receptions with Luke Miller catching 16 passes for 286 yards. They have a lot of weapons with a dual threat quarterback, score a lot of points, give up few, and have good skill depth to run a number of talented athletes at you with little drop off.
24 Shippensburg 5A 10-1
3rd seeded Shippensburg managed the slop of Friday’s unending rain storm, scoring on their first drive for the game’s only tally in a 6-0 win against combative 14th seeded Northeastern. The game featured 12 fumbles (!) but was well managed by the Greyhounds featured back Adam Houser who had 90 yards on 28 carries, taking his season total to 1872 yards. He’ll play at Shippensburg University. Fullback Jacob Loy was the plow horse, gaining 96 yards on 24 carries. Northeastern will look back on a 5-6 season where they lost 4 games by 14 total points including a 32-28 gut check loss to powerful York High after getting trounced the week before by Central York 44-7. Shippensburg moves on to another home game verses York High (10-1, 6th seed) who demolished Northern last week 42-7. Northern plays in the same league as Shippensburg, the Mid Penn-Colonial where they defeated Northern 7-0 Oct 12th. That doesn’t bode well Friday against the quick and powerful Bearcats.
25 Wyomissing 3A 9-2,
3rd seeded Wyomissing defeated Littlestown (7-4, 6th seed) to advance to 2nd round action against 2nd seeded Middletown. Wyo is an experienced team with their entire backfield back from last year and a veteran linebacking corps. They don’t have the players Middletown has this year but have been a small school power for many years, going 74-17 since 2012. That was their last State Title (16-0), beating Aliquippa (15-1) 17-14. Two years later at 13-2 they were beat by Dunmore in the state semifinal 23-21. They have a rich tradition based on years of winning and are almost always in the hunt. See Middletown above for Littlestown, Middletown game information.
26 Hollidaysburg 5A 7-4
Hollidaysburg ripped Brashear 38-7 in the District-6/8 final, gashing the Bulls for 256 yards on the ground on 48 carries. Nothing like pounding it home when you can. The defense was also firing on all cylinders holding Brashear to negative 18 yards rushing. Quarterback Brady Walters rushed for 101 yards with Nate Fisher adding 79 and Hunter Barr 82. They move on to play the District-10 winner Oil City (10-1) who defeated General McLane (7-3) 14-12. The Oilers win avenged their only loss of the year that came against General McLane 17-12 Sept 14th. Oil City has a special back in Christian Cole who is the first running back in the country to crash the 3000 yards mark this year. He’s a 6-1, 210 pound battering ram with 3028 yards through last week’s game and he’s not alone. Running mates Noah Petro (6-0, 200, jr) have 690 yards rushing with sophomore Holden Stahl (6-1, 180) at 392 yards. They’ve thrown the ball 28 times….all year! So that’s what Hollidaysburg better be ready for, a downhill in your face smash-mouth attack. And they play defense too, allowing 115 points all season. This will be their stiffest test since losing to McDowell 6 weeks ago.
27 Exeter Township 5A 6-5
Exeter played some decent teams this year including Berks Catholic, Spring Ford, Conrad Weiser and Governor Mifflin. But none of them so thoroughly took them apart the way Cedar Cliff did last week in a 50-6 destruction that saw the Eagles held to 105 total yards of offense, while generating 5 first downs. Both teams played in the slop with Cedar Cliff featuring a balanced attack that rushed for 190 yards and managed to throw the ball for another 154 yards. But it was still a nice run that saw Exeter field an exciting team that had their moments. This is Coach Matt Bauer’s 10th season and 8th consecutive winning season after 1-9 and 4-6 campaigns. Coach has turned it around.
28 Gettysburg 4A 8-2
The Warriors won their last 7 games to enter the postseason with good momentum, bolstered by winning the York Adams Section-2 title. One of the highlights of the season was their forcing powerful Bishop McDevitt to play 4 quarters in a 48-35 loss where they put more point on them than anyone before Cedar Cliff defeated them 50-43. That highlight was immediately followed by a lowlight, losing to Waynesboro (6-5) 21-16. That was their last loss.
G-burg is an exciting team featuring running back Ammon Johnson and his 1441 rushing yards plus receiver Charles Warren who can motor with good hands hauling in 28 passes for 648 yards. Second year starter Zach Ketterman (6-2, 175), only a sophomore, is the man under center. The Warriors are a lighter (not small), quick striking group that will try to manage Conrad Weiser’s greater size and advantage along the lines. Ketterman can keep them honest and if Robinson can get outside it’s a game. Otherwise, Weiser will pound them behind that line.
29 Susquehanna Township 4A 6-4
Susquehanna Township was idle last week with a bye and the 6-seed working out the kinks of season ending losses to Cedar Cliff and Bishop McDevitt. See Milton Hershey above. It’s hard seeing Hanna getting past a rematch against Milton Hershey with an offense that scored 0, 8, 19, 9, and 14 points against Manheim Central, Milton Hershey, Conrad Weiser, Cedar Cliff and Bishop McDevitt respectively. Whereas, Milton Hershey was competitive in their 32-21 loss to highly ranked Middletown, averaging 36ppg on offense with a D allowing a mere 13ppg. Could be a battle if Hanna rebounds emotionally from those regular season ending losses with the Spartans pulling it out.
30 Ligonier Valley 2A 11-0,
Ligonier Valley won their 3rd straight Heritage Conference title and is gunning for a 3rd straight District-6 2A title! It’s been quite a program over the years going 47-4 from 2015 through this year. 2017’s team (13-1) lost to Dunmore 23-20 in the quarterfinals with the 2016 team (14-1) losing to Southern Columbia 31-27 in the semifinal. Imagine going 27-2 over 2 years, essentially getting 3 seasons worth of experience in 2. This year’s group has a veteran Qb in John Caldwell (68%, 2176, 33/5 ratio) with a pile of skill people like receiver Aaron Tutino (55 1167), running back Kyrie Miller (138/1388, 21 Tds) and Sam Sheeder (58/381 rushing, 33/550 receiving). Their lines are sizeable and experienced with players like OL/DT Mike Petrof 6-2 275, Christian Jablonski 6-5 245, Blake Bridge 5-11 230, Cage Dowden 6-0 220 and Wylie Spikes 6-3 235. Miller had 240 yards and 3 touchdowns vs Marion Center in their 42-0 win as a 2-seed to now face Bellwood Antis (10-1, 3rd seed). LV is a unique team at 2A with a lot of speed, size and talent; a lesser version of Southern Columbia but just as dominant. You see pictures/vids of these guys and know they’ve spent a lot of time in the weight room.
