Any insight to why they were denied? Do they take 5th year seniors? I wouldn’t think as I think that would make them in eligible for PIAA. They have a pretty nice sports portfolio attractive for most leagues. Thanks

The word Im hearing is Wood did not want it, perhaps because it brings a 2nd school into play in Bucks? But Im guessing it would take more than one school to vote against it?

Even so, not sure those two votes would be enough, unless they were able to establish some kind of alliance with other schools?

The decision was an internal matter,

Firebirds had hoped to join the PCL beginning in 2019-20.

Saying only that the decision was an internal matter, the Philadelphia Catholic League on Thursday rejected Holy Ghost Prep’s application to join the 18-member league beginning in the 2019-2020 school year.

Holy Ghost Prep, which sponsors 14 varsity sports and is a member of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA), formally applied to join the PCL in all sports in September.

“I believe we made a strong case before the board — starting with our desire, as a Catholic school, to join a league comprised of other like-minded and mission-driven schools,” HGP president Gregory Geruson said in a letter sent to the Holy Ghost Prep community.

“We share several goals with Philadelphia Catholic League schools such as the importance each of us place on faith, on building communities, and on producing servant-leaders. To us, Catholic schools competing against other Catholic schools just makes sense. And given our shared values and the PCL’s recent addition of Devon Prep, we thought it was the right time to join the Catholic League.”

Devon Prep, formerly a member of the Bicentennial Athletic League, joined the PCL this school year. Both Devon Prep, which sponsors 11 varsity sports, and Holy Ghost are all-boys, private schools and members of the PIAA. Holy Ghost Prep has been affiliated with the BAL for more than 40 years.

“As we move forward, Holy Ghost Prep remains on an impressive trajectory,” Geruson said. “At this time, we will reassess our application to the PCL and determine what is our next best step.

“In the meantime, we will continue our strong relationships with the Bicentennial Athletic League and with District One. As with all our strategic decisions, we will continue to be thoughtful regarding our future athletic league affiliation, with our primary focus being what is in the best interest of Holy Ghost Prep.”
