Jeff Hollenbach will coach his last football game for Pennridge in the annual Thanksgiving game against Quakertown.
EAST ROCKHILL — Pennridge head football coach Jeff Hollenbach told his players on Monday afternoon that he was resigning from the position, but many were not surprised.
“I kind of thought he was going to retire from coaching last year,” Pennridge senior running back Josh Pinckney said. “He’s been doing it for a long time, but he loves the game and he’s been great to play for.”
Hollenbach, 64, who is in his second stint as head coach of the Rams, actually turned in his resignation last week, and then waited a few days to let his team know.
“It’s been something that I’ve been thinking about for a while,” said Hollenbach, whose team reached last week’s PIAA District One Class 6A semifinals where they lost to Garnet Valley and will next host Quakertown on Thanksgiving morning (10:15).
“I retired from teaching (math at the high school) last June and still wanted to coach. I’ve had a lot of fun and there are so many good memories that I’ll always have. But it’s all of the kids over the years that I’ll remember most.”
He will coach Thursday morning’s game, a game that has special meaning to him.
“I’ve always loved the tradition of playing Quakertown on Thanksgiving and it’s something that is great for both communities,” Hollenbach said. “I told the team on the bus after the loss to Garnet Valley that they were lucky to have another game to play.
“So many Thanksgiving games have gone away and most teams that lose in the playoffs are done, but we get to play another game and that’s great for everyone involved.”
And he’ll get to coach one more game at his alma mater.
“I’m happy for Coach Hollenbach,” Pennridge senior running back Evan Exner said. “He means a lot to Pennridge and I’m glad we were able to have a good season in his last year.”
Hollenbach comes into the Quakertown game with a career mark of 111-47 with the Rams.
In his first stint, which ended in 2004 after eight seasons, Pennridge went 72-25. And since his return in 2013, the Rams have compiled a 39-22 mark. They’re 10-3 this season with the losses only coming against powerhouses Neshaminy, North Penn and Garnet Valley.
“I’ve been lucky to have coached some really good teams and a number of teams that had 10 or more wins,” Hollenbach said. “I can’t point to one team as being my favorite. I’ve just been blessed with so many good kids over the years.
“And being able to coach my two sons is something that always meant so much to me. That was a great experience and I’ll always cherish having had that opportunity. For whoever the new coach is, they’ll have some really good players coming back to work with and I wish that coach all of the luck in the world.”
He is the second area coach, and second Suburban One League Continental Conference coach, to step down recently as Central Bucks West’s Chas Cathers also resigned last week.
