Harrisburg went from not having a football season-opener when Monday began to having one of the most intriguing first-week matchups by the afternoon.
Cougars coach Calvin Everett told PennLive his team will take on defending 5A champion Pine-Richland at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday Aug. 28 in the WPIAL vs. Everyone Showcase at Woodland Hills.
Everett said the Cougars and Rams had a verbal agreement in place to play this season before Pine-Richland fired head coach Eric Kasperowicz. And, he said, he thought that might be completely out the window in the wake of that, but with both teams needing a Week One opponent, Everett said they were able to reach an agreement to meet in the showcase.

It figures to be a particularly tough test for the Cougars. While Harrisburg has been one of the state’s best programs across the last half-decade, Everett told PennLive earlier this summer he has a young team that is dealing with lower than normal turnout.
But, Monday, he said he can’t wait to see how that young group fares against the Rams.
“My philosophy is, if you want to be the best, you have to compete against the best,” he said. “The expectation isn’t changing at all. So, we are ready for that challenge.”
