How about these two working around covid to bring us the game of the week in the state with powerhouse District-3 teams going at it. I give Cougars a punchers chance since they punch so well behind a big line and a developing passing game. Gov Mifflin has a few more weapons and a heck of a lot more depth with Harrisburg looking like a Single-A on sidelines per numbers. GM has at least three options with Delsin McNeil adding the pass dimension to the Mid Line, plus FB Trey Rock and the man, Nicholas Singleton. When QB Eden Johnson is in, they have another great runner. Pretty scary the way Mifflin blew out good York and Wilson teams. Monster crowd will be loud. Hopefully televised but Reading (Shillington) is not that far if tickets available.

Calvin Everett has taken the stance that he and his Harrisburg Cougars will play anyone, anywhere as they work to schedule around COVID-19 cancellations.

And he has certainly lived up to that this week — booking what might be the top, high-school game in Pennsylvania.

“We’ve got a game Friday,” Everett told PennLive Wednesday. “Here’s a hint: ‘Who is the best running back in the country?’”

Everett said his Cougars (3-0), ranked ninth in 6A, are hitting the road to take on the top-ranked team in 5A, Governor Mifflin (3-0), and star tailback and Penn State commit, Nicholas Singleton, Friday at 7 p.m.

“The opportunity presented itself, and it’s a great opportunity for us,” Everett told PennLive. “We get to play against the number-one running back in the country … that’s just a great opportunity. I know they are a seasoned team, and, at the end of the day, we want the best.”

Mifflin is more than a seasoned team, though.

With Singleton, a Penn State commit, leading the way, they are legitimate title contenders. And, somehow, in two days, Everett will have to figure out how to stop the star runner — he is averaging 13.5 yards per carry — if the Cougars hope to stay undefeated.

“Obviously, getting ready for them in two days is extremely difficult,” he said. “We are behind the eight-ball. It doesn’t play to our advantage having to prepare for such a talent like that, but at the end of the day, our kids needed an opportunity to play a game.”

Harrisburg was left looking for an opponent when Central Dauphin, which has shut down due to COVID-19 issues, announced it had cancelled this week’s game. Governor Mifflin was slated to play Cedar Crest.

“We are very thankful for the opportunity,” Everett said. “Just a half hour ago, I had no clue that we would be playing. Now, we have someone to look forward to, to game-plan for, and to have an opportunity to go against a team and a player like this is exciting.”

Harrisburg seems willing to play anyone. I like it!

Most definitely Fletchster1, same with Berks Catholic, et al plus some DIstrict-1 teams more recently stretching their legs some. Good for them and exciting for us!
Here are a few more thoughts/comments on Harrisburg (besides rankings /and above), with much already said about Mifflin to date.

** Getting this game scheduled Wednesday (tapes?) means they won’t be as prepared had it been a regular season opponent, even a new non-conference opponent. That leaves things WIDE open.
** Harrisburg has simplified things the last few years going 4-4 exclusively, not multiple, I imagine to maximize speed and athleticism, allowing them to put their ears back and play football. They cover and mask some issues with that speed and athleticism.
** Governor Mifflin does a lot between tackles (Mid Line) and swings things outside to Singleton or Qbs McNeil/Johnson keepers. Point being Harrisburg’s speed makes all things lateral difficult….and they’re a good tackling team.
** Play hard for coach, everyone bought in.
** QB is maturing ahead of time maybe aided by three road games vs quality opposition and importantly, winning against that opposition, Pine Richland and Township. No diss to Hazleton, they were overmatched. Underrated as a runner. As a freshman, the arm strength is ? but gets it down field 40-45yds with accuracy. No cannon.
** Receivers are underrated. All their primary point producers can catch; Kyle Williams, Justin Cook and especially Jovani Maldonaldo, a smart route runner. Cook is a burner, real quick after first step. Ditto Kyle Williams….1st step, plants and cuts.
** Ground game has been unstoppable behind a legit Mid Penn O-Line: RG#51 Jekai King-Williams 5-11 240 sr, RT#55 Tyshawn Black 6-1 285 sr, C #74 Sirkayne Venable 6-4 300 soph, LG#71 Tymere Jennings 5-11 295 jr, LT#64 Roy Irving 6-2 295 sr. FB/LB Mehki Hopkins 6-1 240 jr is their primary, a hard tackle, keeps legs pumping dragging people downfield often.
** Special teams good; kick/punt coverage and returns. At risk every return of going distance. Justin Cook had a KO return vs Township where he assessed at near speed, saw opening then to another gear. Impressive judgement and acceleration. A lot of smart players, good football instincts.

Weakness:
** Poor exchange center-kickers, poor kick offs, squib predominantly, essentially no field goal threat. Very poor punting. Cannot flip field. Kicking game a mess.
** Penalized often, dumb stuff….off sides, unnecessary holding. 8 at ½ with Township.
** Depth issues, 40 total, 26-27 suit up?

PSU recruit Anthony Ivey for Township got loose twice for two scores. Not many Ivey’s on your schedule and GM is a pounder. Township was a good test for Harrisburg despite being a young team. They’re well coached with a lot of athletes and sophomores you’ll be hearing about the next few years including the soph Qb. Good size, went right at Harrisburg.

Harrisburg by far is the best team GM has played. GM may be the best team Harrisburg played depending how you assess Pine Richland. I think Harrisburg kicking game and penalties will catch up to them here on the road against a super athlete and great team, but feel Harrisburg’s speed and athleticism will be a greater shock to GM than GM will be to Harrisburg.
