It was a long time ago, but they did scrimmage at the beginning of the season. Anyone have a report from that match-up? What does GV do well?

Fletch -

Wasn't that a three-team scrimmage over at D-Town East? It was the 'Skins, Jags and Cougars (as I recall). That was very early (August 18th or something). Much to soon to get a fix back then, no doubt.

Then G-Valley is 9-2. A little surprised to see a 6-4 Haverford got them but it was close at 34-28 (in overtime) and then I see Ridley also topped them in another close one.

Don't have too much information on them other than they've score a bunch.

Anybody know what the deal is with them?

Yes, Skinner, it was a long time ago in a land far, far away. Friday night at Heartbreak Ridge, they meet again. I'll be there!

Typical GV team 100 man roster, 2 platoons, best athletes play offense will run until you force them to throw. Little soft on defense, very solid special teams. Not as big or physical as other GV teams buit a solid squad.

GV runs split back veer on offense. Different from what most schools will see week in and out.
Option based run game with lots of play action.
GV will be out manned this week but so was Navy vs ND. The option can give teams fits with only one short week to prepare.

I can't get stats on the Jags (other than they score a fair amount).

How's their ball handling in that two-back set (it can lead to a higher number of turnovers on the fumbles with that handoff and/or pitch - especially if the QB likes to ride the dive back)?

I don't think Langhorne has seen that offense as a meat and potatoes staples - might have been some teams that used it a bit - probably Pennridge last week as they used everything that existed.

'Skins like the 4-4 (not just as you see that 5-2 set up a fair amount). They have been a little behind the curve at times on the read option/option. Would the 4-3 work better, I wonder?

Here are G-Val's stats for 16.

Stalk -

Thanks.

I see that Jacob Buttermore (5' 11", 190, sr.) is their big gun with 111 carries and 819 yards. And they actually have four more guys with just about 70 carries a piece for the year (on average) and about 375 total yards a piece (on average). The QB (Nick Juliano, 5' 10", 175, sr.) is in that mix and he has 72 carries for 356 yards.

They're averaging 46 running plays a game and those five guys are about 35 of them (they listed two more guys with 30 and 45 carries so far this year and then several more besides them with 5, 8 and 19 carries).

They average 287 yards on the ground a game.

Juliano is 27 of 58 for 354 total yards (so they throw 5 times a game and average about 32 yards a game passing). He's thrown 4 TDs and had 5 picks. Colin Davis, with 11 catches and 3 TDs in the air, is their top receiver.

Whoever said they don't pass much was right on.

They run and run and run some more (and they spread it around).

There you go.

Sorry Stalker: I didn't see your link to GV stats until I posted, my bad.

For those of you who can't get to the Nesh vs GV game, go to GV's website and follow the live video game on youtube.

Skinner: Last week the Jags threw 2 TD passes in the last 4 mins to beat CB South. Coach Ricci has a rep for running plays you may not see on film. It may not matter. I thing Nesh will play their game and slowly pull ahead.

Skins front 7 need to play disciplined, assignment football so the secondary doesn't need to creep up to assist. Easier said than done. That rain, wind, snow playoff game a few years back was a nailbiter. GV is tough!

A little insight on Garnet Valley. Haverford game deceiving. They fumbled four times. Their offense is very difficult to defend. You must play assignment defense and win all the one on one battles up front. Their ball handling and fake discipline will give defenses fits. Its midline, outside dive, keep progression every play. If you don't tackle the dive back he will continue to run for 30 yards.

There will be multiple times were the folks in the stands will not know who has the football. There will be multiple uneducated fans wondering why does Garnet Valley keep running up the middle for 4 yards and then they will pop one for 60. The only way to totally shut them down is overwhelm them at LOS. Easier said then done. They are extremely well coached.

Defensively they aren't great but better than people think. They aren't small. Also play a two platoon system so tend to be better as game goes on. Can throw the ball on them.

If they don't turn it over they likely will be in the game unless Nesh just wins the LOS ovewhelmingly and creates turnovers. Can throw it off play action better than most think. They look like a team getting better each week but don't have dynamic game breaking athletes. I would think that fact that the Skins scrimmaged them would be big advantage versus someone seeing them the first time. Playing any team as well coached as Garnet Valley in a playoff game would also make me nervous. Especially with a scrimmage under their belt on tape to figure out where they want to attack Skins. GV Oline vs Skins front 7 will be very telling. If GV can win that matchup this is dogfight. If Skins win it then hearts will rest easy tonight on Heartbreak Ridge.

May each defensive Redskin up front win the battle for dominance of his 2.5-yard circle of responsibility. For as I say to them, it is the truth that victory is assured only when one is not led astray; do not follow the false prophets of the two-back veer and listen to the song of easy tackles and headlines of their names when they will sing as follows:

Come this way, honored linemen and linebackers, great glory of the Ridge, and stay your quest and responsibility, so that you can pursue the easy conquest by enjoying what we show; for just as no one else has ever sailed past this place without deviating from his course and instruction until he has chased the honey-sweet offering that issues from our lure, nor will you; and then as heartened by us you will go on, well-pleased, knowing more than ever you did before; for we know everything of the Rams and Falcons and Titans and as they did and suffered in wide District One through the gods' despite.

So Redskins we say again, over all the generous earth we know everything that happens and we now offer you glorious victory - come this way, honored linemen and linebackers, abandon your home and your DBs and let us make you ours.

GV owned both lines of scrimmage. And their O had the Skins' D tackling air all night. Impressive performance!

HS football is still about the line of scrimmage and running the ball. GV threw 1 incomplete pass and had 2 players rush for over a hundred yards + controlled the clock.
Nesh. offense like the majority of local HS teams today is built on the QB which is a lot of responsibility for one position and not hard to figure out from when breaking down film. 13 incompletions and 8 carries for a total of -14 yards. 55 total plays, 21 went for -14 yards. I point this out because HS coaches today seem to get their offensives from playing Madden football. I guess it's easier then teaching fundamentals like blocking. GV coach seems to understand this, seldom passes but keeps it tight and gives his team a chance to win games in the fourth quarter.

I want to thank you for both your insight and posting updated scores . I appreciate your contributions a great deal.
