The feed on the Neshaminy - Pennridge game dropped out late in the 2nd qtr. so it became a bit confusing. Seems I missed a late score by the Rams and then a very late field goal by Neshaminy to take the lead into the halftime break, 10-7.

Then I'd say the Redskins seemed to be slightly on top of the game in the first half -- but not by much. And Tredway was injured in 1st qtr and did not come back in the game (looked like he had his bell rung on punt return when the Rams' linebacker - Talburton?? - nailed him) -- the rest of the guys stepped up so that was good.

NOTE: The Rams' quarterback IS their team offensively. I don't think they would have done as much without him -- he can really run. He is quick to accelerate and has a great sense of the field (he seemed to "see" where the space was and take off in that direction). He looked as if he twisted an ankle in the third as he was limping a bit but he still pulled off a few nice runs after that.

Anyway, after the halftime break the Rams received the opening kickoff and it was all the QB on that first drive as the Green took the lead, 14-10.

On the ensuing kickoff, and after setting up, Jones hit Garlick for a big gain and then Dogba had a nice 20 yarder to take it in for score which put the 'Skins back on top, 17-14.

The Rams then had a nice drive but killed it with penalties. The QB was carrying them again but even he had penalty for yelling about something after he was sacked (that may have been when he tweaked his ankle). Still, a nice field goal by Rams' kicker made it 17-17 so it was not all a waste for the home club.

Getting the ball back again the 'Skins had great drive going but Jones was picked (it was actually tipped up off the Neshaminy receiver) with the Rams DB taking it to Neshaminy's 40 or so. From there Pennridge took it in quickly and they went up, 24-17.

At that point, and with five minutes to go in game, Neshaminy took over at their 22 after the kickoff. On the first play Jones throws a beautiful 78 yard TD pass to Oleh Manzyk and the score is tied 24-24 after the PAT and with 4:32 on clock.

The Rams get the ball but end up punting and after Neshaminy's short return on their end of the field Jones hits Manzyk again for a 60 yard or so pass that gets 'Skins to the Rams' three. From there Dogba takes it in as 'Skins go back up, 31-24, with 1:17 on clock.

Following the kickoff the Rams started at their 22. A couple of nice runs (one by the QB) puts them at their 45 or so. From there the QB throws deep (to about the 20) where Joel Stills picks it at 20 (and it was a great catch too). With 42 seconds on the clock a couple of knees is all it takes and Neshaminy banks it, 31-24.

The Rams QB is good - without him this probably is not a close game.

The 'Skins started slow but seemed to grow into the game. Jones had a bad completion percentage in the first half but lit it up in the second half. Dogba also started off slow but probably had 125 to 150 (I'm guessing).

With Tredway out Manzyk filled in nicely (Garlick too).

'Skins have been behind in both of their games but then came back to win them. Nice to see they don't quit. Jones throws a lot and he doesn't throw picks (one in two games with probably 50 plus passes) but he misses more than you'd like. But he makes up for it with some big strikes (he did it against Roman too). They also pulled off some very nice screen passes tonight.

Dogba chugs and chugs. He is deceptive in that he can get into a pile at times and it looks like a scrum but he'll step out and gain some ground. He doesn't have blazing speed but enough. He's a hard charger.

The Defense is running around. and getting after it but they issued a few tackles that allowed big gains but overall they stay on it (they started getting to the Rams QB late which was nice to see). The 'Skins DBs are around the ball.

As an observation both Roman and Pennridge seemed to fade in the games and Neshaminy continued playing hard -- I think that made the difference in both.

Another observation is the Rams defense looks good.

As a neutral observer, Nesh got a huge break on their last TD. The receiver went in motion forward 2-3 yards before the snap. Now the Rams get screwed on the ensuing KO.

Moleskinner has a good write up on the game, but I’ll add a few observations I had while watching the game in Perkasie.

Huge win for the Redskins, and another exciting game! Another exciting finish! Final score Neshaminy 31 Pennridge 24.

A lot of people who don’t attend high school football games are missing out on great entertainment value when two very good high school football teams face each other.

Wow, Neshaminy is a very explosive offensive team. Dangerous on offense all over the field. They hae a ton of weapons in their arsenal. Mason Jones is strong armed, and he has a boatload of talented recievers plus a very good running back in workhorse Wil Dogba.

Pennridge is a very tough hard hitting team that is very hard to run on. The Rams offense is effective if unimaginative. It mostly consists of QB Jagger Hartshorn running either a read option, where he mostly keeps the ball or rolls out, where again, he mostly keeps the ball. Hartshorn has good vision when running the ball. He doesn’t appear especially elusive with quick shifts and feints, rather he follows and sets up blockers and manages to break tackles, often by not giving defenders good attack angles for solid contact.

The game kind of see-sawed back and fourth throughout. However, Pennridge’s huge advantage in the punting game almost led to the Redskins undoing. Ram Punter, Matt Mauer is a preseason favorite to be the first team All State punter, and tonight he just banged the ball. As I mentioned last week, the Skins punting game is not very good as their punter is a starting offensive lineman and a player who gets the majority of the defensive line reps in the rotation. While other teams punters are loosening up on the sideline, keeping their kicking leg limber and warm, Neshaminy’s punter is wrestling with big defensive line ogres while the Skins have the ball. This is going to continue to be a huge disadvantage that the Skins Offense is going to have to remedy, by getting first downs, and the defense is going to have to make really quick four and out stands. The point of this is that Pennridge started with great field position all night, mostly stating on the Skins side of the line of the 50. This put a lot of pressure on Neshamin’ys D. The Skins meanwhile had to travel great distances for their scores. The Ram punter, Mauer is also their place kicker and he kept the Skins back at their 20 after each Pennridge score. Neshaminy’s Dylan MacDonald is also a fine place kicker with a strong (Syracuse soccer scholarship) leg and he repeatedly put the ball into the end zone or inside of the 5. Pennridge’s return game was a little more effective than Neshaminy’s as the cover guys stayed in their lanes, while a few times the Redskin coverage teams left their lanes and over pursued allowing gaps for nice returns.

As I have said before, Pennridge’s linebackers are outstanding, maybe the best bunch I have seen at the high school level. MLB Nick Tarburton is a beast and I can easily see why he gets All State preseason hype. The guy hits like a truck, and at 6’3, maybe 6’4, and 245, he looks like a truck. He gets great penetration, pursues like a demon and does not miss tackles. The hit on Tredway was questionable. Zach was returning a punt, squeezed between two Rams when Traburton lit him up. He came in high, it looked like helmet to helmet, and Zach never saw him as he was pancaked. I spoke with Tredway’s dad and he said Zach passed all of the concussion protocols and was fine and ready and willing to return to action, but the trainer, who has final say, would not let him as a precautionary measure. This was a big loss for the Skins as Tredway at 6’4 is a huge mismatch advantage for the Skins against most teams and he is an excellent target with great chemistry with QB Mason Jones. He is also the starting safety and signal caller for the defense. The other MLB, Joe Robinson and OLB Jackson Henry were also all over the place. Henry mostly as a standup DE rushing the QB.

Pennridge was very undisciplined and their own worst enemies all night. The penalty calls were huge one sided against Pennridge, and absolutely correct. The officials actually did a nice job. I know as a Redskin fan, I sound really biased, but I was there, and I am telling you, Pennridge was very undisciplined, late hits, mouthing off (as often happens when a team gets upset at seemingly lopsided calls -even when they are accurate), pass interference and holds. As an example, a Pennridge CB early in the game very clearly had two huge handfuls of Zach Tredway’s jersey and wrestled him out of bounds, and then got on the ref as though it was an awful call. It was obviously defensive holding. Anyway, the penalties cost Pennridge the game, as it gave the Skins life on some drives and stopped the Rams of some of theirs.

Moleskinner was saying how good the Pennridge QB is, I agree he is a good/effective runner as stated earlier, however, he is very inaccurate when passing. This is mostly due, I believe, to his constantly throwing on the run. Their whole offense is predicated on his legs.

Skins RB Wil Dogba came through big against that tough run D and really piled up yards in the third quarter. I know he was well over 100 yards rushing.

TE Oleh Manzyk was a killer tonight, showing great speed and athleticism. On the play he took to the three to set up the winning TD by Dogba, he juggled/air dribbled the ball for a few strides, maintained focus and hauled it in. He broke the Rams fans heart with those two huge plays.

Mike Garlick had another excellent game making big plays on both sides of the ball.

Mason Jones showed off his arm with a good half dozen long throws. His accuracy was again a little problematic. One time his in in a tight window, another he is overthrowing someone. The overthrows probably have to do with footwork. He made the big throws when they counted however, and is unafraid to make a play. He is the kind of player you want in a big game.

I think both of these teams are playoff teams and they are both pretty dangerous opponents. We’ll know more next week when both teams face another challenge similar to next week as Pennridge travels to Perk Valley and Neshaminy travels to Downingtown West.

IronMarshal -

Good write-up (and thanks for the nod as I cleaned mine up a bit).

You captured the essence of the game especially the penalties. It did seem the Rams were a bit chippy (the QB was really in the official's face when he had the call on him). It also seemed a potential interference call or two by Rams got by the refs.

And then the hit on Tredway was a close call (hard to see on the tube). He seemed held up or squished in when the big LB got him (I thought his head bounced off the turf when he went down and that's where the hit was as the LB looked like he smothered him).

Good game - very good game.

The Neshaminy side has video of the hit according to the team parents I was sitting with and they said it was "a cheap shot" I wouldn't say it was cheap, I would call it aggresive and probably a penalty if we are trying to protect the kids. That Nick Tarburton is a great football player. He is a junior and he has to be getting D1 looks. He looks like a prototypical Penn State linebacker, a Shane Conlan, Dan Connor type.

I only saw the first half and all the posts here regarding that game are right on cue.I wanted to see the Tarburton kid and he surely is a beast. He has all the measurables to be an excellent D1 football player somewhere. He also plays extremely fast and I think he would have been very successful running the ball had Hollenback let him. He did get burned on the Redskins first TD. It looked like the only type of running game Pennridge had was their QB. Pennridge's punter really looks special too.

Neshaminy's passing game looks to be their specialty. They had success with every screen pass they attempted and Dogma looks to compliment their passing game. I was also impressed with Neshaminy's O and DLine. This is a team that will get better every week. Very well coached.

Lastly, the venue was sensational. I've never been to their new field and its much nicer (with a large seating capacity for both sides) than I anticipated.

Skins have to play better D and improve the punting unit. Can't let QB right, QB left run wild like that and can't continue to allow teams to have such short fields. Fundamental tackling, just simply keeping head up on approach needs to be a focus.

The Redskins played much better than week 1. They did get an advantage on that one TD. The kid was two yards beyond the line of scrimmage it seemed, but I disagree Pennridge got screwed on any of their penalties. They're lucky #16 or #40 weren't thrown out of the game for their constant yapping and chippiness. On one of those personal fouls a Pennridge kid threw a punch. Another was a late spear on Dogba. I think there were 4 personal fouls on Pennridge. That's coaching.

Why is Neshaminy using a lineman to punt and not their kicker who booms 60 yarders in warm-ups? Also the Redskins need to learn how to break down and tackle.

Chippiness and aggressive is okay, but blatant personal fouls will cost a team in the long run - agree with the coaching comment.
Breakdown and tackle should be the mantra for this week's practice - dropping one's head and diving at a ball carrier is a recipe for giving up over 20 points a game (22 so far). Riddick will have a field day next Friday if that doesn't improve.

The kicker tried punting last year and had to be replaced during the season. He is reluctant to give it a go again. Truthfully, his punting wasn't any better than the kid who punts now. That said, they should be able to get someone else to punt. There is a huge disadvantage to having a starting lineman punt even if he has a strong leg. That time on the sidline loosening up and focusing is critical.

Agree with this. That is two weeks in a row of somewhat sloppy tackling. Riddick really scares me. I told one of the players who is a family friend, after the RC game that Riddick is going to be a special problem given the success AJ Gayman had against them.

Kit, this was my first time to the new field. Great setting and atmosphere with a game to match. No need to comment on the game as Skinner and Marshal nailed it. The Inquirer should hire you guys.

Here are a few pics I took during sunset.

Garlick - any relation to the Garlicks who played at Judge? Tom's son, perhaps?

Garlick's style of play reminds me of a LaSalle-type player - quick and tough!

Swarming D (with Tredway) will be needed to keep the wraps on Riddick Friday night.

Riddick is 60% at best. Still bothered by right knee and tough to watch really considering what he was pre-injury. Better going to his left than to the injury side but clearly not the same. O-line not helping much either and defense (tackling) is beyond bad. Hopefully it improves as season goes.
