If we have to give them a "Get out of Jail" free card they got it tonight.

Roman showed some stuff tonight.

He's a nice player. Got a little rattled with pressure at times. #5 and #10 hurt Neshaminy. Both team gave the other too many opportunities.

Heartbreak on the Ridge tonight! Fortunately not for us, but it could have been.

Yes Fletchster, Anthony Butler is a player! He has a big time arm. He threw one pass about 65 yards, perfect spiral that went incomplete. He was very accurate most of the night. His decision making at times was a little off, probably due to coaching. There was one play that he had a wide open field to run and threw an incomplete into tough coverage. He could have ran for at least 25 yards.

Crazy finish. RC is threatening late in the game with the score 28-20 when Mike "the Wolverine" Garlick picks off Butler at about the Skins ten runs it back to about the 20 with about 1:30 left in the game. Dogba blasts through the line for about 20 yards and runs out of bounds. Game right? Take three knees, maybe 4, or a run around and drop to the ground to eat up the clock, with the 2 RC timeouts and game over. But no, a handoff, shades of the Meadowlands and Herman Edwards! Dogba gets stripped and next thing I know a Cahilite is running toward the Skins goal line. He gets stopped around the 15 or so. Trouble! Heartbreak our way. But the official take the ball back to the point of the turnover and say RC ball, whistle blew. OK, so RC has a long way to go, about 65 yards with 38 seconds left. A couple of tosses to the slotback across the middle and they are inside the 30. an RC player is getting stopped and the clock is going to run out and he fumbles the ball, another RC player scoops and scoots and is finally stopped inside the 10. What a crazy finish to a really entertaining game!

My thoughts on the game:
The Skins offense is about as dangerous as I thought. They took the opening kickoff and drove all the way to the goal line stopped on 4th and 1. Unfortunately, the defense is a work in progress and immediately gave up a 99 yard TD drive.

Fortunately, the Skins passing attack is really good, I mean really good. Jones threw the ball accurately into some tight windows. Tredway made some terrific catches, Garlic made some real good plays and Dogba was a terror on the wheel routes. Jones even hit some long throws, and RC was forced into several interference calls.

On D, the Skins got great play by the secondary, and they needed it. Butler was pretty accurate and was zipping the ball into tight windows all night. The skin defenders covered tight and made some terrific recoveries to break up plays that could have been TDs. Joe Stills and Zach Tredway made two really tough breakups on recovery plays, both of which if completed would probably gone all of the way.

Jones, Tredway, Dogba and Garlick stood out, Stills, Manzyk and Gordon had good games and Hayden Rooney made a couple of big plays on D.

The Skins did lose the battle of the trenches for quite a bit (although the pass protection was pretty good) and were severely gashed several times. I am concerned about playing against DTown West and Michael Riddick.

Roman Catholic has some real good talent there. Bristow, the big wideout has great hands and the two slot guys are very good as ell. Gayman and Cooper had great games running the ball. And of course Butler was there. I thought he looked better throwing then Brendan McIlwain used to for CRN.

Line play needs to improve, especially against the next two teams. Plus Neshaminy needs to get the punting situation better, that is going to cost them games. I was sitting with Neshaminy great Bob Grupp during the game (Moleskinner, you might know him). Bob punted in the NFL and actually beat out out Ray Guy for the Pro Bowl one year. He has offered to help the kid (who is a starting lineman both ways) punting, but was told that while he is welcome to help, they have a guy volunteering with special teams who knows punting. I know, I am biased as Bob is my friend, but you are going to be hard pressed to find somebody better suited for that.

Anyway, way to go Skins! And good game Roman Catholic. I hope you knock off some of those big boys on your schedule. You look like a dangerous team.

IronMarshall -

Bobby Grupp! He was (and is) a great athlete and was the QB for the 1972 group that posted a 9-2 record (on the heels of the '71 bunch that had a pretty decent season). They were a tough bunch (Joey Sroba at HB - UVA - Bobby at Duke and then Len Barker the FB who went on to a great MLB career including the 10th ever - at that time - perfect game when he was with Cleveland in 1981 - Bart Smith at Yale - as I recall, nice group). Get Mr. Grupp to give a few lessons on punting as that was not quite as clean as you might like to see.

Anyway, after sleeping on this I do agree that the offense probably looked a little better than I projected in my post. With 391 yards they moved the ball and had they got that one in at the one we could live with 35 points in game one). It's obvious Jones can throw and he has receivers but 12 for 30 isn't quite as tight as you'd like (although the 268 yards, 3 TDs and no INTs isn't so bad). And he also lugged one in for another score (so he contributed plenty).

Then Will Dogba had 111 on 20 carries so not bad. It seemed he was a little off in the first half but opened up a bit in the second half. I will say that there were more than a few times when there wasn't much of a hole.

Defensively I'd say the DBs came through when they needed to (Tredway got a hand in some that prevented a score) and there was some good effort here and there. Still, the line did not put the kinda pressure you need on the Roman QB (he looks like he had the tools but it seemed that he was a little reluctant to run when he had space preferring to force a pass). Their HB was also scary. I suppose it was game one but the tackling seemed a little lacking.

Go 'Skins!

Although the punting was uncertain McDonald can kick with some strong boots.

They did win and it was game one - so there you have it; however, on the road next week with Pennridge says they need to up their game somewhat (and nothing against Roman as I'd say they have some talent and it seemed that their line was good sized - they'll be making noise this season, no doubt).

Next week's Neshaminy-Pennridge game is shaping up nicely. The Rams put up 49 in the first half against Norristown today, final was 49-20.

Might have to head over after work for this game, although Bergen Catholic at Wood is a heavyweight match-up. If going to Perkasie, I'll definitely hit "The Perk" for the pre-game. Thoughts?

I am planning on being at the Penn ridge Neshaminy game. Penn ridge is always tough. The linebacker they have is pretty special as is their punter.
