Since this came up on another thread (I think arguing about Pine-Richland's talent level?) - from the state champs project stuff I've done, here are all the FBS players who started for state champs in 6A/4A. Outside of a few outliers, which will be apparent, I was surprised how consistent the numbers were from year-to-year. Discuss away.

2021 Mount Lebanon (2): Eli Heidenreich (Navy), Alex Tecza (Navy)

I don’t know if you want to count this, but on the 2017 P-R team Tyler King became a Navy commit and went to boot camp, but it wasn’t a good fit so transferred.

Notes
- I included Jamar Brittingham and Zayd Issah because, while they didn't end up at FBS programs, they were committed there and did not lose those opportunities due to football reasons, so I felt as a talent assessment, they belonged in the group.
-The CB West 1998 team is one of the best teams of the state playoff era, but only had Picciotti and Carber go FBS. The flip side is, they had nine FCS guys (New Hampshire, three Richmonds, Princeton, Duquesne, two Rhode Islands, UMass, Delaware), which is a huge number. PCC 2004 is similar, with five FBS and eight FCS (Wofford, Delaware, two Georgetowns, Bucknell, Cornell, Columbia, Duquesne)

I know this post is for 4A-6A but wanted to share the FBS players on Southern Columbia's 2017-19 state championship teams. Ridiculous for a 2A school. All except Hollenbach are currently starting or seeing significant playing time. Haladay was recently Big 10 defensive player of the week 2 weeks in a row.

Cal Haladay - Michigan State
Julian Fleming - Ohio State
Gaige Garcia - Michigan/Lehigh
Preston Zachman - Wisconsin
Gavin Garcia - Kent State
Stone Hollenbach - Alabama

At least 1 FCS player I know of
Max Tillett - New Hampshire

What's crazy is, I don't think they had had an FBS player since Henry Hynoski in the early 2000s. Then to have all of those guys in one group was nuts (though Hollenbach was a PWO I think - still a good player, but slightly different situation). Haladay, Fleming, and Zachman are all good Big Ten starters.

Also, I'm working on the 3A which became 5A/4A, I have a lot of the teams, but not all of them. I might just ones the runs i've got.

there was a lot of talk about the 2019 team being at least the 2nd best team in the state that year

I agree, that was the best small school team I've ever seen. Not sure if they would have beat SJP but I think it would have been close.

Ok, I think I have the 3A (til 2015) and 5A/4A history of state champs. I might be missing guys on the more recent teams, and last year's Penn-Trafford and Aliquippa teams required some projections. I think 2009 Selinsgrove had Ryan Keiser (Penn State)

I think 2009 Selinsgrove had Ryan Keiser (Penn State)
So this is where line drawing becomes an issue. He walked on at Penn State, and I didn’t include those guys - Nick Pinchek from Parkland and Gregg Garrity from North Allegheny were the others who were PWOs who carved out a role at Penn State. Keiser was the best of those guys, earning some starts as a senior, but on the whole I filtered power conference walk-ons out, because it tends to skew the data. Like, Mike Glass for Parkland walked-on and spent a year on the South Carolina football team, but it’s not like he was an SEC recruit playing for 2002 Parkland that season.

1991 strong Vincent had an OL Quinton Orlando go to Michigan st.
Thanks! That team is impossible to find archived information on!! I know Tony Robie through wrestling, but he's the only guy I could tell you anything about post-HS from that group. Also, Orlando played offensive line? I have him as a running back (ran for 1,036 yards and 23 TDS) and linebacker?

Rover, random question for ya..... You brought up Dan Connor and it got me thinking. He started as a freshmen and made deep runs for 4 years straight, including 3 trips to the title game. Off the top of my head, I'm gonna guess he started and played in 55ish games give or take a few. My question is, who in Pa history has started/played in the most games as a player? I dont know the answer and I know it's off topic and pretty random, but if anyone can dig that answer up, it would be you and/or Stalk. Great work as always!!

Some of those guys from that Southern Columbia team I mentioned (Fleming and Haladay) started as freshmen and played in 4 straight state championship games from 2016 to 2019. I don't remember any of them missing any games due to injury except Gaige Garcia who missed the 2016 state championship game against Steel Valley. A 16 game season makes that 64 (63 for Garcia). There may be others tied but that has to be the most.

Mike Orihel started 3 years at QB for Central Bucks West and his career record was 44-1. I always thought that was quite an accomplishment, and oh so close to finishing 45-0.

That is a great question - it’s probably the Southern Columbia guys?

From up our way, Jarrod Holley at Easton started every single game of his career, which I just counted as 52 games (state final 4 as a freshman, D11 finals as a sophomore and junior). He also played both ways and returned kicks for every game of his career, not sure if anybody played more snaps in the Lehigh Valley. (Off topic - He also was just on the coaching staff that got let go at North Texas, will be interesting to see where he lands. If he wants to take a high school job, he’d be a great fit at our Alma mater…)

Dan Persa started 53ish games at quarterback for Liberty - I do not remember when he took over at QB during his freshman year. No playoff games as a freshman, but then went to D11 finals as a sophomore and state finals as a junior and senior.

In the pre huge playoffs era, Erik Marsh started 41 games at running back for Bethlehem Catholic, going 37-4 and winning state titles in 1988 and 1990. Lost in the final four in 1989. That was the era of D11 was a one game championship, then states was just semis and finals.

Easton also had Juan Gaddy, who had the opportunity to play in 52 games from 1989-1992, but he missed a ton of his ‘92 year with injuries, plus a handful of ‘91. He played only corner as a freshman, then ran for 5,000 yards over the next three years.

Tyler Boyd played in and won a state title all 4 years of high school at Clairton

that's 64 games

Conner missed the state title game his senior year, losing in the semis and they only played 15 games per season then

Im curious what this year's mcdevitt and sjp looks as far as fbs guys. They both seem to be loaded with them.

The 1991 Strong Vincent fbs kid was Jamaal Crawford who went to play at Michigan st. He was first team all state at left tackle in 1991. Interesting fact 1991 SV and 1991 Erie prep were both in the 4A and 3A State championship in 1991. Vincent beating Conestoga valley and ECP runner up to cb west. Vincent and prep played for the metro league title at veteran memorial stadium in Erie that year. It was pouring down rain yet the game was still sold out. ECP won 7-0 on a mark Tate td.
