No, not those streakers....back in college where we redefined “Big Man on Campus”. I’m talking teams that are undefeated and those that put together at least four straight wins. Here we go.
Southeast PA….undefeated, D1, D12.
6A
North Penn 6-0; On the road in-conference at 5-1 CB East with an offense in high gear topping 40ppg their last 3. East’s 27-6 loss at CB South says they’re in big trouble here. After East comes Souderton, Tennett and Abington suggesting a run out.
Neshaminy 6-0; Come on now, Abington gave em a fight, losing 21-0 ending their 3 game win streak while the Tribe knuckled down defensively to get their first shutout of the year. CB South (5-1) is next in Langhorne and could be a little banged up after the 42-13 loss to North Penn last week.
Perkiomen Valley 6-0; Back in the day this would have featured two undefeated teams; Perk Val 6-0 vs Spring Ford at 5-0-1. But now they play overtime and that’s the only blemish on this field with the Rams losing to D3 blue blood Wilson back in week 3 in double overtime. Spring Ford won at home last year 28-14 with a markedly better defense. There are shades of that this year with Rams allowing only 86 points (72 minus Wilson ots) to Perk Val’s 116. But this one is at Perk Val. Spring Ford has the horses but it will be by a sliver if they pull it off.
Philadelphia Central 5-0; Beat Wissahickon 27-21 and Frankford 28-0, with Mastery North, GW and South Philly left making it look like they run the table.
St. Joseph’s Prep 4-0; Really something when you think about the Hawks running up 49, 35 and 43 points on Oaks Christian, Don Bosco Prep and Archbishop Wood in consecutive games in any year! In Conshohocken Friday (A Field) vs Roman.
5A
Springfield 6-0; Cougars are looking good with last week’s ot road win at Ridley. Can’t let up at Strath Haven this week
Marple Newtown 6-0; Bad time to catch Ridley off a home ot loss to rival Springfield. Look out for the Mean Green this weekend but the Tigers won’t go down easy.
Academy Park 6-0; At inconsistent Glen Mills where the Bulls used to be somebody playing Coatesville, Parkland, North Penn, Pennsbury, Abington, St. Ignatius and the Downingtown teams before screwing it up joining the Del-Val. Oh well!
Upper Dublin 5-0; Cardinals are home to Plymouth Whitemarsh who has also won 5 in a row counting last week’s Springfield forfeit. Springfield could have played until the body count (safety) was a factor right? UD trounced Colonials last year 42-0.
4A
Imhotep 5-0; Guess the criticism for scheduling got a little quitter after waffling Malvern Prep 48-7 last week. Panthers came in with a winning margin of 53-2 and this one wasn’t much different! Back to the abysmal AAA Public League finds them with another no challenge playing 0-4 West Philly who has been outscored 139 to 6. Three of those were shutouts.
Cardinal O’Hara 5-0; Talk about quite. This has to be the quietest 5-0 team in the PCL or southeast PA for that matter. They’re outscoring opponents 181 to 26. Maybe these guys should play up!
Boys Latin Charter 6-0; The Boys are just stomping people by an average score of 38-10. I know it’s Roxy, but….64 to 14? They have something going on. At Fels Friday with Bartram a real road block the week after.
One or two losses but still streaking;
Coatesville 5-1; Got off to a shaky start with the Cumberland Valley loss then ripped off 4 straight, smoking CR North, Henderson, Downingtown West and WC East by an average score of 42-14. At Downingtown East Friday.
Downingtown East 5-1; Cougars won 4 straight since losing to North Penn 23-6. East won last year 22-12.
Plymouth Whitemarsh 5-1; Won their last 5 after season open home loss to Souderton 38-23 who since winning their first 3 lost the last 3.
Haverford 4-2; Upset in opener at Chester 24-21 then lost home opener to Ridley 7-0 before going on a tear, capped off by the 34-28 ot win over Garnet Valley last week. At winless Harriton next.
Bartram 5-1; 4 straight by a count of 198-12 since losing to Gratz in the opener.
Other Eastern team, D2, D4, D11.
D2
Dunmore 2A 6-0; What’s new, this D2 powerhouse is kicking butt again, winning impressively at Lakeland (5-1) 32-21 to show they’ve got another strong group. They’re at Susquehanna Community (3-3) Friday.
Scranton Prep 3A 5-1; Narrow loss to Abington Heights in opener 21-14 before running off 5 straight with most impressive win at Wyoming (5-1) 14-7. Nice tune-up this week against winless Honesdale before a hard one at Western Wayne (5-1).
Western Wayne 3A 5-1; Like Scranton Prep, the Wildcats haven’t lost since day one, reeling off 5 wins but now face the gauntlet of power teams North Pocono and Scranton Prep, both 5-1, but both at Western Wayne.
D4
Williamsport 6-0; May make a run with almost everyone back from last year and an offense loaded with speed averaging 48ppg. The issue is the schedule that shows a win over Wyoming Valley West 4-2, 35-22 and a decent 4-2 Shikellamy team 49-19. Thereon it’s connecting linkage games for a shaky estimate of comparative strength. We’ll know more about them after the game at Delaware Valley (4-2) Saturday.
Montoursville 3A 6-0;The Warriors have another strong team (9-4 last year) who play Southern Columbia Friday night, a team they lost to last year 56-50 in the district final. Montoursville passed for 238 yards in that one but Southern battered them for 458 on the ground. With quarterback Brycen Mussina back, throwing to senior receivers Riley Conboy, Tom Shea and Mitchel Rothrock for 248, 788 and 286 yards respectively, it looks like bombs away and a great game
Southern Columbia 2A 6-0; Southern won their 8th state title last year, a state record, and 23rd district title (!) before going on to destroy Aliquippa 49-14 in the final. These country boys have known how to play football for a long, long time. Almost everyone graduated but it’s an experienced team that will make another run, averaging 56ppg! At Montoursville Friday for one of the top games in the state.
Wellsboro 2A 6-0; District 4 Class-A defending champ (10-3, lost to Old Forge in playoffs) has a veteran bunch led by junior quarterback Quinn Henry (1378py, 1046ry) a veteran OL and TE Parker Jones (6-6, 225, sr) who is next to impossible to stop at this level. Had 40 catches for 577 yards last year. The Hornets are rolling over people, averaging 36, allowing 5 with 4 shutouts. Coach Matt Hildrebrand is 34-7 into his 4th year at the helm. At Cowanesque Valley Friday.
South Williamsport 2A 5-1; The Williamsport area teams are rolling with the Mounties winning 4 straight. None more impressive than last week’s win over perennial power Triple-A Loyalsock (4-2) 20-7. At Bloomsburg Friday.
Sayre 1A 4-2; Won their last 4.
D11
Emmaus 6-0; Edged Freedom at home last week 37-35 but tough road trips at Liberty and Easton are next before the closer at home to Parkland.
Pleasant Valley 5-1; Won 4 straight after the 1-1 start and finish with Dieruff, East Stroudsburg North, Pocono Mt. East and the decisive final at home against Stroudsburg. The PV Bears are exciting scoring 45ppg and allowing 30!
Stroudsburg 5-1; Here’s another hot team reeling of 5 straight after the loss at Easton. Home to Allen.
Allentown Central Catholic 4A 5-1; Won 5 with no contests since 2nd week win against Pleasant Valley 38-27. 0-6 Pookie Mountain East is next.
Notre Dame 3A 6-0; The Crusaders seem on cruise control with Catasauqua up next. Catty is 0-3 on the road this year.
Schuylkill Haven 2A 6-0; They’re doing it with strong defense, allowing 10ppg. Home to Minersville.
Tri Valley 1A 5-1; The Bulldogs won their last 4 with Pine Grove next on the road.
Williams Valley 1A 5-1, Won last 5 with the 6th on the way against 1-5 Susquenita.
