It would be difficult for anyone to avoid criticism as an offensive coordinator in the season after Drew and Brett Gordon left. And it would be virtually impossible for Ryan Doyal, an unknown at the time, to endear himself immediately to the La Salle faithful so used to the Gordons.
The first half of the season was a feeling-out process, and the offense was somewhat tentative. But the offensive game plan opened up as the playoffs approached, and Ryan Doyal's greatest achievement in the 2015 season was the offensive game plan against St. Joseph's Prep in the Quad A PCL Championship game. The Hawks were kept off-balance as Chris Ferguson's accuracy on medium crossing-route passes were mixed up with the running attack. Remember that La Salle came back from a 28-17 deficit with two long drives capped by Nick Rinella's miraculous catch in the end zone for the winning score. They got into position to win that game because of great play-calling by Ryan Doyal.
La Salle averaged about 27 points a game in 2015, compared to the 28 to 32 points a game in the Drew Gordon era. In the final 6 games of the season, including 4 playoff games, the Explorers averaged 33 points a game; not too shabby for a "tentative" offense.
I have no knowledge if Ryan Doyal will indeed be back for the 2016 season, but he deserves some of the credit for the achievements of a team that several prognosticators on this site had winning only 3 games in 2016. For me, that Prep championship victory will always have Ryan Doyal's fingerprints on it. Hail, La Salle!
