District 1 proposal

Just did a quick read that District 1 was thinking of going to even split into divisions with 10 week inter-district 1 schedule. This would be 6A and 5A with 4 converences with lower divisions going into a mix it looks like. Reason being non league scheduling is hard to manage. Would be the end of some interesting non league early season scheduling. Some of these more fun early season games would go by wayside. Would hate to see just all district one scheduling. Already see it in other sports.

Yea, I saw this email and it is very interesting to say the least. Lots of pros and cons, but someone definitely put a lot of thought into it.

I like the proposal and this will especially satisfy the whiners in 6A (thinking of one in the borough w lower enrollment totals because they don't count the STEM kids) but it will take away some long time league rivalries. I look forward to renewing potential old ones Coatesville - SpringFord or maybe Coatesville - Conestoga
(both former Chesmont members) if they materialize. One scenario I wondering is what will happen to Upper Darby? One of the biggest school enrollments..with all do respect playing Haverford, Lower Merion, Ridley, etc. vs playing North Penn, Pennsbury, Neshaminy is going to be a step up to say the least.

This seems to have been discussed previously - at least informally. In essence, a WPIAL type arrangement in SEPA: SEPIAA - the South Eastern Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association -- so to speak.

Could be fun as you might see some regular season games that have heretofore been confined to the post-season. Still, wiping out all extra-District or out-of-state wouldn't be something I'd like as that adds a bit to any season.

PS I hope I understood how this proposal or idea might work (if not, ooops).

I can't say this idea thrills me, but I certainly understand the rationale behind it. It's about the almighty playoff points and how some teams seek the easier path while others are given no choice but to take the hard road. The one thing that always bothered me about the Central League was that it's schedule hardly afforded their teams the flexibility to schedule games outside of their own conference, and in a few years, after the novelty wears off, I'm afraid that's where we will be unless the crossover games are on some type of revolving schedule. I just don't want to see teams playing the same ten teams every year. And who will Wood, SJP and LaSalle play in non league games then? It's hard enough for them to get games now.

One of the motivations in creating this, to stop playing teams that recruit kids from the District 1 schools.

Just re-reading the article and it indicates the proposal could be voted on October12th. Not much talk from the board or local papers on how the D1 schools will vote. Any thoughts from board? Please keep the public & private recruiting comments out. Personally as a fan I like the proposed 6A division out here with Coatesville, DEast and West, PV and SpringFord playing each other almost every week. Thanks

This will never be accepted or work. The problem is playoffs. Schools want to be able to find teams they can beat with out putting a lot of emphasis or resources into making their programs competitive. Administrations are lazy! Why would a school from lower Chester Co. travel to Upper Bucks Co. to play a school with equal enrollment? Before all the emphasis on playoffs schools would travel to the lehigh valley or mid state for a game. Today that doesn't happen because teams are afraid to loose. Also it eliminates playing neighboring schools. The reforming of the Bux-Mont with NP and the other schools has helped increase attendants which would be eliminated with the new proposal. Who would want to travel 40 miles on a Friday night for a game? The answer is for schools to upgrade their programs (Upper Dublin) and stop crying about how unfair things are. You can't legislate equality in football.

Shoe, did you even look at the 4 divisions? They are grouped by geography. NP's division looks like the old Bux-Mont and Neshaminy's division looks like the current SOL National. The only real travel would be a couple non-league games to start the season. Regardless of setup, 16 of 33 schools are getting in the playoffs.

I agreed with OOShoe, but have since been convinced otherwise. The 6A schools want this, as Newman107 stated, "It's all about the playoffs!" Like Shoe, I didn't think it would happen, but from what I'm hearing, this proposal is likely to happen. I hope it doesn't, but we shall see.

Looking at this proposal it really doesnt change things that much for SOL schools as they are still playing each other in the East and North divisions. I think the proposal very much helps the Chesmont and Central as they have many 5A member schools and are forced to play at least 3 or 4 games against these teams during the season. (PAC 10 changed to a 6A division this year but the proposal will help this league too). Let's face it all the leagues have some doormats but this will level the playing field allowing all leagues to equally collect 6A win points vs leagues that have split 6A/5A enrollments. Additionally the proposal still allows the flexibility to schedule 2 or 3 non league games. Schools who choose to schedule difficult non league games (NP-DTE or Neshaminy-DTW) will have the edge in playoff points. Another point is it's going to get harder for schools such as Avon Grove, Methacton, Upper Darby, etc who will along with Truman, Tennett, Bensalem, etc will either stay bad or will force administrations help them upgrade. I think poorer schools Upper Darby, Truman, etc will be stuck but Avon Grove which dropped all 9th grade sports at least 5 years ago may be forced to reinstate programs. Should be interesting to see how the vote goes.

Are you sure they will have the flexibility to schedule 2-3 non league games? The article seems to imply that there will be non league games, but those games will be pre-determined.

Yeah Implies pre-determined non league and only against other D1 teams, much like old WPIAL, which has recently softened on out of WPIAL play...NP-LS comes to mind as a game that would no longer be possible, I'm sure there are other non-league rivalries with a D1 team and a non D1 team. Maybe not enough to worry about?

You would think there has to be some flexibility. There are 3-8 team divisions and one 9 team division. Once the leagues start playing for good in Week 4, the odd 9 team division would have one team sit out every week or play a non league game-but not from the other 3 divisions since they would be locked in.

Speed - I did see the example of non league but not sure if it's just an example or if it's predetermined non leagues schedule. Predetermined non league would have me opt out. Hoping we get clarity in a newspaper article (Pete DiG or Ricky OBrien).

OK, the meeting was this morning. I thought Rick would have been all over this. Where's Cooney? Bueller? Anyone?

From the October 12th meeting. As expected, nothing new here:

District One Committee agreed discussion regarding the District One Football schedule proposal will continue. League Representatives brought forward questions and concerns from their leagues. A D1 Football Sub Committee will be formed and will meet on a date and time TBD. Football Steering Committee will meet on December 6th . Each League will send the name of the D1 sub-committee rep to Sean Kelly.

I like this proposal. It changes up the teams you'll been playing forever. I'd like to see the thanksgiving day games continue with other teams playing a non league game. As far as traveling north from Delco, why not? Haven has done it. Pope John Paul the last 2 yrs, Upper Moreland in 09 and 10. So, you leave a little sooner.

I am sure the students and fans will all make the trip on a Friday night to play a school they never heard of.

Seriously Shoe: Year after year students and fans hop in thier cars and go to games and places they've never been to and never heard of. Come playoffs, they go where their team goes. It wouldn't be any different during the season. It's called school spirit.
