Could Aliquippa a single A school be a favorite in 5A next year.

The quips have everyone back including a monster line, a D1 running back, plus a lot of other D1 talent all over the field. Is it possible that a single A school could win 5A and be the favorite coming into the season. 5A is one of the biggest and most stacked division in the wpial. Adding the quips just adds to it. 5A will be interesting next season. I do think it's crazy they are forced up yet again but we will see if the appeal process actually works.

IMO, yes. 5A is balanced and above average but I don’t think there are any great teams.

New, I think Aliquippa is that great team. They have everyone back. You also have to add TJ into the mix too. It's one of the biggest divisions in one of the best conferences. Whoever comes out of the wpial will really have to grind it out but the quips are my preseason favorite if they stay in 5A.

TJ staying 4A.

Statewide in 5A it’s WPIAL and Philly with Imhotep and Wood (who goes down to 5A I believe)

Ok someone on a different forum wrote tj was moving up but I guess they were wrong. I agree it'll be the wpial winner against wood or tep in Hershey.

Yes, Quips will be "a favorite." they essentially "pounded 4A last year" so yes, good chance they will be top 4 of WPIAL

I'll put out something on D3 shortly, a short-quick hit overview of the classes.

I wander where this will end. Now if they are successful in 5A which they will be the piaa will move them to 6A. We'd have a single A school playing 6A there's a huge flaw in the system. The piaa is biased against the WPIAL.

Maybe the clowns at PIAA should have them play Georgia next or North Dakota St.

I think the PIAA had the right idea, but didn’t account for the sort of edge case that Aliquippa is. Quips are probably unique.

PIAA should just admit that and make the “Aliquippa Exception.”

To me, IMO, to be honest, it is really a tricky, interesting issue. I have talked to some 4A people who thought it was "unfair" playing this great, huge, tough Quip Team. I think there are people "crying wolf with wolves running around."

I think, yes, there are Quip families moving, transient, who "transfer" to live in Quippa, just for unintentional economic reasons. However... in the local area, Beaver County, im sure there are some families moving to Aliquippa, from 10 miles away, maybe in grade 9 or 10, hoping to get a football scholarship. So, they really ARE moving for "football reasons." So- like Hopewell, or Ambridge- moving to Quippa- to play for a championship, or get a scholarship. Thoughts??

How many Quips get full scholarships each year? 3 or 4 max?

I guess moving could happen, but that (moving or going to school there) seems like a bad idea given all that seems to go in there outside of football.

I'm all for the success formula, look how competitive the games were in Hershey this year. Explain to me how southern Columbia who has 400+ students and found a loop hole with the piaa not counting vo tech students win thier appeal but Aliquippa who got punished for choosing to move up on their own in the first place and because of that now has to play 4 clases above thier classification with less then half the boys SC has lost their appeal. Southern Columbia has been dominating AA as well. It's BS.

This has been going on for twenty years. Parents packing up and moving into school districts so their kids can take advantage of sports. PIAA has had a rule in place for years stating families can't transfer into a school district for sports reasons. They've figured out how to get around that by moving in before hs. There are other ways to have athletes come in without being in a school district. They're being creative. Relayer and I have had this discussion years ago.

What kind of draconian system would tell a parent they can't move into a area for any reason or suppose they know the reason why an individual moved to a place?

Stalker, that is a great question, but it happens in WPIAL every year- not sure good or bad, or the wisdom of it, but it happens. Seems usually the ones the go "public" are Basketball and Football. And- b/c of the trainwreck at PR last year i imagine a lot of kids would have considered it, if not" for this "transfer eligibility" rule, not sure, maybe 5-10 families would have moved.

Very simple solution to the Aliquippa problem if the people running the PIAA had a clue. Just establish a 2 class rule-no team can play more than 2 classes up from their enrollment size. Competitive formula and transfer rule can only take a program up 2 classes max. If they're truly worried about athlete safety, then forcing a school with an enrollment size of 1A to play against schools 3-4x their size could pose problems. Once a school has moved up (forcefully or voluntarily) 2 class sizes above their recognized enrollment, the buck stops there.

So Aliquippa would be capped at 3A (1A enrollment) unless their enrollment takes them to 2A in the next cycle at which point they could only play as high as 4A.

Too bad anything as irrelevant/insignificant to the overall as a PIAA policy would influence what a parent might do with their children, for the good of their children who might benefit by a transfer and potential scholarship that otherwise might not occur. Why wouldn't you want this for your child? Why would any agency discourage it?

I think the big elephant in the room is that there is no non-athletic reason to go to / move to Aliquippa. That's not to say that the athletic reason are good ones (because I don't see a ton of kids getting scholarships - its not IMG or SJP). The school is poorly performing and the area isn't a great place to live. BUT - it seems legitimately like many of these kids have no other option. Living there seems like it's the last option, and football is the only redeeming thing. It's a very difficult situation.

I've always found the athletic transfer to be a bit overblown. I mean God forbid someone wants to move (which is not exactly an ideal situation to pack up and move your family) and also have their kids play for a good sports program. There are a few people who would take the chance and if they do, more power to them. I for one wouldn't up and move while my kid is in high school. I thought about that when we bought my house 10 years ago so that we wouldn't have to move for something like sports.

Stalker it's a shame Aliquippa is moving up because with them having everyone back and same with mcdevitt that would of been a hell of a game in Hershey next year. Since the quips did get moved up I think mcdevitt will be the clear favorite in 4A next year. It's amazing as great of a program that they have they haven't had a title since 95.

The point of my 2-cents was they're likely moving into the area to get a scholarship, ie....education. Why else would anyone move to Aliquippa!?!?
Remote as that may be (scholarship offer), hope springs eternal........especially with and for our kids.

Everybody is at least "partly correct" in this "transfer" and "unfair move-up" discussion. Most families and kids, are just thinking about "soon and now." they want to play for a great team and great program, not really trying to "cheat the system" by moving 10 miles, to live in Aliquippa. and- how about this- if the kids do well, they might get better grades, have a better chance of graduating HS, right? AND, if a kid has a "championship coach" checking on his grades, he may graduate, with a 2.6 instead of a 1.8-- they might be able to go to college- not as a player, just a student, going to state school or even community college. Kids want to win games, have fun, win championships- and "some" think about football after HS. The "reasons" for moving to Quip "for football" are not just about "football scholarships." Aliquippa is "justified" in objecting to this move to 5A. BUT, the process and rule is ALSO "justified." If they stayed in 4A they might win another title. and, here is a funny example:
5A, includes
Quip
shaler
Baldwin

Which team might face an "unsafe unfair advantage" Shaler? Or Aliquippa?
