Obviously, this year is going to be a mess. However, Pennlive (formerly the Harrisburg Patriot-News) released their preseason poll last week. Since taking over for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette as the AP distributed state poll in 1987, the Pennlive rankings have been the most consistent week-to-week rankings in PA during the state playoff era (starting in 1988). From my state series, I have a bunch of those preseason polls on file, so I found the rest to do a little preseason history lesson to distract everybody from the mess of school board meetings, conference announcements, etc. I think it’s also good for posterity and history to have a record of “this is what was expected would have happened in a normal year.”

#1 St. Joseph’s Prep Hawks
Last Season: 12-2; PCL Champs, D12 Champs, State Champs

The Hawks are the preseason #1 for the fourth year in a row, and fifth time since 2014. They have been ranked in the top two in the state to start the year every year since 2013. No doubt as to why, they’re going for their sixth state championship in the last eight years. In a normal season, we’d be looking at potentially one of the greatest big school teams of all time, with four of the best individual players in the country in Kyle McCord, Marvin Harrison Jr., and Jeremiah Trotter Jr., and Keenan Nelson, who are all in the 247 Top 100 players in their class. Their entire receiving corps is going to FBS programs in Harrison (Ohio State), Samir Hagans (Duke) and Malik Cooper (Temple) with a five star quarterback throwing them the ball. But the PCL cancelling their fall season and rumors of McCord and Harrison opting out no matter what add more uncertainty to the most uncertain season of our lifetimes.

#2 Pittsburgh Central Catholic Vikings
Last Season: 13-2; WPIAL 6A Co-Champs, District 7 Champs, Western Finalists

The Vikings come in ranked #2 behind St. Joseph’s Prep for the second straight year in the preseason poll. The Vikings have started the season in the top ten 17 of the last 20 seasons, with twelve of rankings in the top three, including preseason #1 slot sin 2004, 2006, 2009, 2011, 2015, and 2016 – winning wire-to-wire titles in 2004 and 2015. They were ranked preseason #2 during their 2007 title run, and were unranked for the entire year in 1988 before winning the inaugural title. This iteration of the Vikings has the leading returning rusher in the state in Eddy Tillman as well as four star defensive lineman Elliott Donald from a squad that pushed SJP to overtime in the state semifinals. Bralen Henderson and Donovan Hinisch give the Vikings yet another pair of Division I prospects on the defensive line to team with Donald. With the bracket flipping them back to the “west”, they would be the favorite to meet SJP in the finals.

#3 Central Dauphin Rams
Last Season: 12-3; District 3 Champs, State Finalists

The Rams are slotted at #3 after advancing to the state finals in 2019. This is the fifth time Central Dauphin has been ranked in the preseason top 10, including the fourth time since 2012, and their highest ranking since being the preseason #1 in 2012 coming off of their 2011 state championship. They were also the preseason #1 back in 2002, which was also their first state playoff appearance. The Rams bring back all state linebacker/running back Tim Smith to run behind FBS recruit Blake Heshler, plus returning 2,000 yard passer Max Mosey will keep defenses honest with the passing game, and are a solid favorite to repeat in District 3.

#4 Archbishop Wood Vikings
Last Season: 11-3; District 12 5A Champs, State 5A Champs

This is Wood’s first year in the largest classification after winning six of the last nine championships in either 3A or 5A. Wood brings back all state all purpose back Cardel Pigford, who had over 1,000 yards from scrimmage last year and caught the game winner in the 5A state finals, and all state linebacker Shane Collier, who finished with 17 TFLs and seven sacks. They also bring back defensive end prospect Robert Jackson, a three star recruit with over 20 FBS offers, and budding star wide receiver Andrew McHugh, who caught 22 passes for 305 yards and picked off three passes as a sophomore. They will not play this season with the Archdiocese of Philadelphia opting out of fall sports.

#5 North Penn Knights
Last Season: 8-4; D1 Quarterfinals

North Penn has been ranked in the preseason top ten for 19 of the last 22 years, only missing in 2000, 2002, and 2015. This is the Knight’s 11th time in the top five, and they were the preseason #1 in 2001 and 2010. They won their title from a preseason #4 ranking in 2003. Despite not being ranked until 1998, they have the most preseason top 10 appearances of any school in the biggest classification since the start of state playoffs. The Knights advanced to the District 1 quarterfinals last season, and return junior running back Khalani Eaton, who ran for over 1,600 yards as a sophomore last season and will be one of the biggest offensive threats in the state in 2020. The Knights are looking to win the first out of district playoff game for District 1 since 2012.

#6 Delaware Valley Warriors
Last Season: 11-2; District 2 Champs

This is Delaware Valley’s first time in the preseason top 10 in the state playoff era and they are the first District 2 team in the top 10 in the largest classification since Wyoming Valley West in 1997 and only the third in the state playoff era (Wilkes-Barre Coughlin in 1990 is the other). The Warriors bring back all state linebacker/fullback Jason Henderson, who recently committed to play football at Old Dominion after leading the state with 162 tackles last season. Del Val made their first state playoff appearance last year after winning a District 2/4 subregional title, then lost to State College in the first round of states.

#7 State College Little Lions
Last Season: 11-2; District 6/8/10 Subregional Champs

State College is making their fifth straight preseason appearance in the top 10 and seventh overall (also were ranked in 2009 and 1999). The Little Lions have dominated the central part of the state recently, winning five out of the last six subregional titles, but have not advanced past the state quarterfinals since going to the state final in 2009. The Little Lions return all state running back Dresyn Green, who has put up back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons and made five interceptions last year at cornerback. They also return all state safety Sammy Knipe, a recent Navy commit and three star recruit, who will be a four year starter on defense.

#8 Northeast Vikings
Last SEason: 11-2; Philly Public League Champs

Northeast is the first Philadelphia Public School ever ranked in the preseason top 10 in the state’s largest classification. Northeast has a pair of four star defensive ends in senior and Georgia commit Elijah Jeudy and junior Ken Talley, who would wreak havoc against any offensive line in the state. They also return 1,000 yard running back and Old Dominion recruit Juke Peaker and Texas A&M commit Tyreek Chappell at cornerback/wide receiver. This is almost assuredly the best PPL team in the biggest classification since they joined the PIAA in 2004.

#9 Easton Red Rovers
Last Season: 8-5; D11 Semifinals

Easton now been ranked in preseason polls the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s, making them one of the first two programs to make preseason top 10s in five different decades of the state playoff era. This is the fourteenth time in the preseason top 10 for the Red Rovers since 1988, but first since 2013, which ended a stretch of eight preseason top tens in 11 years from 2003-2013. They also started the year in the top ten from 1989 through 1994. Easton returns the bulk of their impact skill players, led by all state running back and recent Louisiana-Monroe commit Nahjee Adams and all state linebacker Tamir Jackson. Quarterback Cole Transue is a US Army All American Bowl underclassman invite and is one to watch after throwing for 1,800 yards as a sophomore.

#10 North Allegheny Tigers
Last Season: 10-2; WPIAL 6A Co-Champs; D7 semifinals

The other school to pull the “five decades” trick is the North Allegheny, who are making their seventeenth preseason top 10 – tied with PCC for the second most appearances in the preseason poll. The Tigers won their three state titles after starting the year #10 (1990), #7 (2010), and #4 (2012) and have now started ranked in four out of the last five years. The Tigers have one of the best linebacking corps in the state, with three star recruits Khalil Dinkins and Nathan Hoke (a BYU commit) returning. Dinkins also will be one of the best tight ends in the state, though the Tigers need to replace the rest of their skill players on offense after a trip to the WPIAL semifinals last season.

-----
This is the most diverse preseason poll ever, with seven different districts represented. It is only the second time District 12 has the most teams represented in the preseason poll (3), the last being in 2008, the Philly Catholic League's first season in the PIAA when #3 St. Joseph's Prep, #7 Archbishop Ryan, and #9 Cardinal O'Hara all started the season in the top ten - coincidentally, the only season that the PCL did not have a team in the state playoffs. Most historical stuff to follow.

This is good stuff. Thanks for posting. Out here, PCC is definitely the favorite with a pretty big rebuild on the O and D lines. Donald will need to play both ways and another Hinish looks to be the second best linemen. They return a nice core of WR's and of course have Tilman. Need to find a QB - possibly a freshman transfer from South Fayette who looks like a stud. Defensively they will of course be solid with Donald leading the way. They have many DB's back and 2 LBs. They lose the Allen Twins, Beatty, Sunseri, and a LB and FS on that side of ball.

NA seems just like every other NA in the past 5-8 years. They have one really outstanding kid in Dinkins (P5 offers) then it drops off quite a bit. The Hoke kid is good, but limited a bit athletically. Need to retool the lines and find someone to replace Colella was was an explosive playmaker last year. They will be solid again but I don't expect them to compete with PCC.

The other two teams to watch are Seneca Valley and Mt. Lebanon. (Both currently shut down because of Covid concerns).

This group of seniors is supposed to be the best in a while. They need to find a QB and a couple lineman. Having seen them last year, they also need to upgrade their young skill a bit to contend. The have a very good LB/RB returning (FCS type kid) that is a playmaker. Very well coached team.

This is the second year under Coach Palko and he should have more of his system installed. Has had some staff turnover, but the group of rising juniors is supposed to be the best they have had in a while. They lose a lot of nice seniors, but have a WR/DB back that played as a sophomore.

I won't be following these teams as closely since P-R is now 5A, but will report as I hear things. At this point, I would say PCC is #1 and the other three are all right there looking to get to the championship against them.

One thing I want to mention - its been 7 going on 8 years since NA has been to the championship game with no wins. I think that needs to change in the next couple years or things could get dicey in Wexford. Seneca Valley has been there twice in that time and P-R 4x. That's a pretty big swing in the north.

If they run Art Walker out of North Allegheny, I know a school on the PA/NJ border with a history of power run game and defense with an alum who would happily fund raise whatever salary he named to go coach there.

Perhaps dicey was too strong a word. Maybe "interesting" would be a better word. Coach Walker is a teacher at NA with a kid that's probably about in Middle School now. There is a perception that he needs to do it with local kids. Kugler, Kugler and Leftwich were move in's. (But I think the 2010 team was mostly local kids.) Recently they played Porter, Guilden, Guilden and one other kid who were transfer from North Catholic and didn't win. I don't think he'll get fired, but I also think he needs to win. They were 10-0 in 2018 and 9-0 in 2019 and didn't make it to Heinz.

What's funny about all this is that the power is slowing shifting more and more northward in this area. North Hills in the 80, 90's and early 2000's. NA in the late 2000's and early 2010's, P-R and SV from mid 2010's to now.

Same in the south. BP, USC shifting to Lebo, Peters, South Fayette.

I guess all about demographics and population growth.

Thanks for the D7 round up new2pa. I still haven’t fully adjusted to there being so damn few teams in 6A, losing all of the traditional powers to 5A out there has sucked from a fan of statewide big school football. How good is the next Hinisch? Just on bloodlines I'd assume the kid can play. PCC's interior line play in the last decade has been so good.

If we’re previewing, I’m not sure how D11 breaks down. On paper, Easton should be really good. Their backfield is going to be excellent - Nahjee Adams is in the handful of best running backs in Pennsylvania, Tamir Jackson is a true fullback who will be both a change of pace and a brutal lead blocker, and Cole Transue showed flashed as a sophomore, if he can get more consistent with experience he has all the physical tools of a Division I quarterback. The o-line has some jobs open, but Derek Frinzi is a multi-year starter and Donovan Lance and Ben Sawchuck have both played a lot, and the juniors in the mix at tackle are green but talented. There are also a lot of snaps available at receiver and tight end, with only junior Kyle Evancho returning with double digit catches, but there are some intriguing options, particularly Marcus Williams, who was a state qualifier in the 200 as a freshman and flashed returning kicks last year.

Defensively, there's lots of talent back with Lance and Frinzi both starters returning on the defensive line. Jackson was an All State pick last year and would be looking for a third straight 100 tackle season - which hasn't been done at Easton since Mark Libiano from 1989-1991. He's short (5'9 230), but is the type of player who makes a bunch of Division II All American teams. Dom Falcone was also an all conference pick at linebacker last year, and Zion Jones is another returning starter at the position. Jaden Kelly, who has a handful of D2 offers, is back at corner, as is nickelback Javion Thompson, and I'd expect Adams to go both ways again this year after only playing offense as a junior.

The elephant in the room is of course, how is that all going to be managed? Easton has lost at least four games for five straight years - the first time that's happened since the 1980-84 and only the second time ever. A sixth straight 4+ loss year has never happened. The pandemic may have saved the coaching staff that dubious distinction. But on paper, this is their best team, and they have to put together some results soon. Particularly with wrestling coach Jamarr Billman getting fired in the spring, it's a weird time in Easton athletics, and his lawsuit seems to gain a lot of steam if he gets fired for underachieving but the football program continues its slide into irrelevance with no consequences.

Looking around the rest of the league, Parkland brings back Isaiah Rico, who ran for 1,600 yards last season and Ty Tremba, who took over at quarterback halfway through the year and led them on a seven game winning streak that ended in the D11 final on a crazy play. Tremba is an old school, dual threat, almost option QB, and should be pretty dangerous with a full season under his belt. They need to completely replace their offensive line, including Penn State recruit Nick Dawkins, but they've been able to reload for a decade now up front.

Returning champ Nazareth graduated just about everybody, but did add Parkland transfer Mike McCarthy (Sr. 6'3 205) at quarterback. Freedom also got crushed by graduation after the best four year run in school history. Emmaus brings back 1,700 yard rusher Brandon Camire (Sr. 5'10 170) and all conference linebacker Jared Groller (Jr. 5'10 200), but has an entire offensive and defensive line to replace. Liberty has the best kicker in the United States of America in Penn State recruit Sander Sahaydak, but not totally sure what they have behind that. Northampton brings back all EPC North quarterback Joe Kerbacher (Sr. 6'2 180), but their schedule gets dramatically harder getting the other five Northampton county schools.

The other team that should be very good in the Lehigh Valley is Allentown Central Catholic, who is ranked in 10th 4A in the preseason with Lehigh commit Matt Rauschler (Sr. 6'2 200) at quarterback, FCS recruit Jayden Williams (Sr. 6'1 215) at tailback, and two of the best defenders in the Valley in Leroy Johnson (Sr. 6'2 215) at linebacker and Lavon Johnson (Jr. 6'4 320) at nose tackle. They're probably my pick to win the Lehigh County Division. The other 4A school, Bethlehem Catholic, is huge up front with Dalton Kucher (Sr. 6'3 270) and Justin Kanyuk (Jr. 6'6 305), but no returning skill guys and no impact transfers. I'm also hearing rumors that they nearly fired Joe Henrich in the offseason and that there is some turmoil at the top of that program.

Everything is cyclical. Certainly around these parts the overarching stories of the last 30 years is the shift of population from William Allen and Dieruff to Parkland and Emmaus; the changing power balance in Bethlehem from Becahi to Liberty and back, with Freedom relegating Liberty to a distant third recently; and the total shift in small school power from the slate belt towns like Pen Argyl and Northern Lehigh to the secondary suburban districts like Saucon Valley and Southern Lehigh, plus the rise of Notre Dame recently as a private small school option. I'm fascinated by how and why those things happen.

Hinish is good, but not nearly as big as the last one. Probably 6'1 260 type of kid. The last one was 6'4" 285. Just a monster.

He’s a captain at Notre Dame this year, right? I had him on my all decade team, just the perfect high school nose tackle.

Relayer, that news is pretty big. I'd say its now close to a toss up between PCC, NA, SV and Lebo.

NA is the clear cut favorite now, they got three big time transfers this offseason (big linemen from NC, big wide out from CA, and one of kiski’s best players) as well as what they returned. They’re moving dinkins to TE so that will be a lot in the passing game for teams to handle. They reload in the backfield with younger dinkins and JR burton, honestly if they find a QB it would be hard to bet against them for 6A. Funny how they load up on all these transfers but literally dodged pine

There's no reason anymore for them to play PR until they come back to 6A. I wouldn't want to play a team that has disrespected them multiple times; making sexual remarks towards the female band members and planting your flag in the middle of the opponents field.

Jacky, I thought I saw on twitter from Mike White that the kid from Kiski was ineligible.

Bummer, I'm thinking the 3-6 record vs Coach K and 1 win in the last 5 games also might have a little to do with it besides those thing you mention. Lets not commend Art for his sportsmanship. Lots of people remember the picth-pass for a TD up 35 in 2016. No love lost. And that's how it should be!

FWIW.......

I know a lot of these teams are not playing but how is Upper Merion ranked in the top 10 of 5A? I can think of about 20 schools who should be ranked ahead of them.

FWIW.......

Interesting that 6A is the exact same ten in virtually the same order. Some consensus I guess? If I'm making tiers in that top 10, it's probably
1. SJP
---
2. PCC
3. Central Dauphin
4. Wood
---
5. North Penn
6. Delaware Valley
7. North Allegheny
8. State College
9. Northeast
10. Easton
That third tier probably extends down to more teams knocking on the door - I don't see any of that back five being head and shoulders over other teams in the state.

From the Lehigh Valley perspective in other classifications, the more I look at it, the better I think Allentown Central Catholic is going to be. I think they could be a player in 4A.

Kind of wild that no other EPC/Colonial League teams are ranked in any other classification, I've seen East Stroudsburg South getting some love in 5A, they've been pretty consistently good at that level recently, particularly with Whitehall down.

Not sure who the Colonial League pick is, I know Notre Dame brings back a lot - most of the offensive line, including a pair of DII/FCS type recruits, a 1,000 yard running back, and a quarterback who looked great as a sophomore before getting hurt and missing the back half of the season.
