A: Bishop Guilfoyle (14-1) at Port Allegany (14-0)

Bishop Guilfoyle's only loss was to Penn Cambria (only loss to AAA finalist, Avonworth).
Port Allegany ran over everyone, but Wilmington (9-3) and Ridgway/Johnsonburg (4-7).

BG by 21 over PA

Final
BG 41
PA 22

Tied at 14 in Q3 is all PA could have asked for. PA might have benefitted by developing a 2nd and 3rd option during some of their lopsided victories.

AA: Troy (15-0) at Central Clarion (14-0)

Troy ran over everyone, but Dover (3-6, large school).
Central Clarion destroyed everyone including Farrell (7-6, with some solid wins).

CC by 7 over Troy

Final
Troy 25
CC 24

CC battled back early in the 2nd half to seemingly take control, but Troy then countered late to take a 1 pt lead with 1:12 to go. I'm sure the CC HC is rethinking not taking a timeout after a big sack on 1st down with about 46 secs to go.

AAA: Northwestern Lehigh (15-0) at Avonworth (12-3)

Northwestern Lehigh rolled over all comers, but Southern Lehigh (12-3, state semis in AAAA)
Avonworth has won all but 3 games (Aliquippa - AAAA state quarters, TJ - AAAA state semis, Beaver - avenged in playoffs)

NL by 21 over Avonworth

Final
NL 36
Avonworth 33

Didn't see the game, but box score shows it as a back and forth slugfest. NL held Avonworth to a FG in OT which allowed them to walkoff with a TD. Avonworth held Zimmerman to 4 ypc, but he finished it off with a 10 y TD. Sounds like a game that needs to be watched.

AAAA: Bonner (11-2) at Lampeter Strasburg (14-0)

Bonner's only losses were to other top SE PA non-boundary schools. Beat Roman (AAAAA finalist), another SE PA non-boundary school.
Lampeter Strasburg is undefeated, but just snuck by in their previous two playoff games.

Bonner by 28 over LS

Final
Bonner 40
LA 14

Teams can't win as an underdog when turning the ball over constantly. I'm sure LS HC would love to have the last few minutes of Q2 back after breaking even at 14-14 and forcing a punt. Ouch!

AAAAA: Roman (11-4) at Bishop McDevitt (13-2)

Roman's only losses are to top non-boundary schools (3 SE PA, 1 MD) with solid wins over MP and Rustin.
Bishop McDevitt only two losses to solid teams (Harrisburg in OT, State College in a close one). Only one great win (Pine Richland)

Roman by 14 over BM

Final
BM 34
Roman 31

Back and forth game that saw Roman claw their way back to take the lead late, but BM able to force OT and get a stop. Fun game!

AAAAAA: SJP (10-2) at PCC (12-2)

SJP two losses were to really solid teams (St Edward - week 1, St E struggled later in the season, LaSalle - top 3-5 team in PA). Rolled everyone else besides Good Counsel.
PCC hasn't lost since starting 0-2. Good wins over NA, SC, and Harrisburg.

SJP by 17 over PCC

Final
SJP 35
PCC 6

Didn't see the game, but it took SJP a whole 14 seconds to go up 7-0 and were leading 21-0 after Q1. Probably not worth a watch.

One thing is certain. This Catholic League Red is in uncharted waters. 3 finalists and a LaSalle team that clearly is 1a in the entire state. Probably the best league of all time.

Always been partial to the Catholic League for many reasons and was lucky enough to a part of it for many years. A shared tradition with an entire city and surrounding area. So many relationships, so many great times, so many conversations. Really special thing to be in bar 50 miles from where you live and share something in common.

Tonight as I root for one of the programs I was associated with, I think of Bishop Joe McFadden. This was always his goal and thought process. That this could happen. That the league could dominate. Not everyone really was on board. But he was right. Quite frankly sports has kept doors open at some of these schools.

Now as a guy who has had his kids play at boundary schools, it obvious this isn’t a level playing field. To anyone who says it is, they are just in denial.

But for many of us who have been around here 20 plus years, the argument used to be no way could the Catholic League compete. We knew that was insanity. Second many of my great colleagues from work in Pittsburgh used to tell me that SEPA football would never be able to compete with the West. Many an IC or Penn Pilsner drank in that loop.

Once the Philadelphia and surrounding areas were allowed to aggregate talent this was a self fulfilling prophecy that quite frankly would be even more lopsided if the Inter Ac didn’t exist. Not saying it’s good for football, PIAA but there was an air of arrogance from the Brad Cashmans of the world.

Very dismissive of the Catholic League. That was foolhardy. It’s also amped up the recruiting profile of Philadelphia and surrounding areas. Under recruited for years.

Lastly three teams from the old Southern Division have a shot at title this weekend. That’s incredible. Best of Luck.

You nailed the 1A game exactly

Fletch, you're halfway there in the 3A game. 14-0 Bonner in the 1st

1A game is already over but I would've picked Bishop Guilfoyle, it's clear they had a great recruiting year after mercy ruling everybody's pick in 1A since the preseason Westinghouse

2A I know nothing about these teams, I'll pick Central Clarion because they beat South Park 55 - 0, though I think the WPIAL was way down this year in this class

3A Avonworth because this Northwestern Lehigh team was extremely unimpressive in last years 3A game, 3A seems to be a class where the rest of the state is way way behind the WPIAL

4A watching it now and Bonner is winning by one touchdown, so no pick

5A Roman because they were the preseason favorite and Bishop Mcdevitt always seems to get crushed by these Philly teams

6A SJP by at least 3 touchdowns

Just a crushing pick-6 on the last play of the half against L-S. Bonner in control again, 27-14.

Two crushing INTs at the end of the half. Momentum, good 1st down run in middle and then try to run a stretch play against all of that speed getting them way behind the sticks. 3rd and long pick when trying to throw it out of bounds. Should have ran out the clock after it got to 21-14.

Nice post. Was actually fun argument 20 - 25 years ago and the evidence showed the Catholic League and PIAA teams were a lot more similar than both sides thought at that time. The late 90s and early 2000 to 2010 game prove it. Highly Highly competitive games during non league season and in playoffs, and then boom, Wood, West Catholic, LaSalle and SJP took off to a different level and now where we are today. Would be tough task but would be cool to see a chart of college football commits by school weather D1, 1AA, 2 and 3 year by year. I think that would show it pretty clearly over the years how things changed.

Troy 12 - Central Clarion 3 at halftime. Fun watching Troy run midline, wedge, toss, power and iso...

CC HC is going to be kicking himself for not calling TO with around 46 sec after that sack on 1st down.

3 of 6 decided by 3 or less with a 1 pt margin. 2 OT games.
3 of 6 were laughers late (Margins of 19, 26, 29).
