With the playoffs fast approaching, I have been thinking about all of the terrific high school football players I have seen this year (and some last year who are playing this year, but I have not seen them). Since I have seen mostly SOL teams, and mostly SOLN teams, although I have been reading the excerpts of the other teams in SOL on Suburban One Sports.com and other places, I thought I would mention some players who I thought might be up for all SOL honors. I welcome other opinions. I am not sure my stats are up to date.
At QB The top 2 are neck and neck.
North Penn’s Reece Udinski has the best numbers and is the key to the 9-0 Knights record, with 59.9% completions, 2276 yds and 23 TDs to 5 int, and 124 rushing yds
Neshaminy’s Mason Jones has great numbers too, and his team is likewise 9-0. Jones has a 52.4 pct completions, 1956 yds and a gaudy 22 TD to 2 Ints. He has rushed for 115 yds and has two rushing TDs.
Pennridge’s Jagger Hartshorn is my number 3, based primarily on his 1043 rushing yards and 14 rushing TDs. He is the Rams offense. His passing numbers are pedestrian at best, 42.6 pct, 814 yds, 7 TDs and 3 int. I am sure the QB from Upper Dublin probably warrants consideration here as well, but I have not seen him. Freeman of Truman, Moore at Bensalem, Curotto of Souderton, Johns of CBS, are all good players who have not had as much talent around them, and most have missed significant playing time and are further down on my list.
At Running Back:
Abington’s Darryl Davis-McNeil has been the big gun rushing for 1799 yards, a 7.8 ave, and 18 TDs. He is a clear number 1.
Souderton’s Koby Khan is a tough hombre, and has rushed for 1228 yds, 7.4 ave, and 15 TDs. Khan alos has 12 catches for 249 yards and 2 more TDs
Neshaminy’s Will Dogba has taken a back seat to the prolific passing attack, and large leads that have seen his backup get a lot of action, still has managed 1061 yards, a 7.3 ave, and 16 TDs, plus 11 catces for 88 yds and 2 more TDs.
Bensalem’s big fullback, Malcom Carey 605 yds, 6.2, 6 Tds, North Penn’s Nick Dillon, 608 yds, 6.6 yds, 12 Tds and 13 catches for 252 yds, and CBSouth’s Tyler Watson, 637 yds, 6.6, 6 TDs, 8 catches, 179 yds and 2 more scores all warrant consideration for the 4 spot. Noah Wood at Quakertown may figure in there too as his numbers are similar to these 3. There are other fine backs, I think PW has some, but I think I have the top three here.
At Wide Receiver: there are a slew of good ones, especially at Neshaminy and North Penn. The top three are probably Tredway, Johns, and Reid, but Henley, Hubler, Manzyk and Garlick have been terrific as well.
Neshaminy has:
Zach Tredway, 36 grabs, 630 yds, 17.5 ave, 7 TDs
Ohleh Manzyk (actually a TE/Slot receiver), 17 catches, 542 yds, 31.9 av (yes, you read that right!), 8 TDs
Mike Garlick, 25 grabs, 493 yds, 19.7 ave., 5 TDs
North Penn has:
Ricky Johns, 31 catches, 621 yds, 20 ave, 4 TDs
Justis Henley, 28 catches, 529 yds, 18.9 ave, 6 TDs
Jake Hubler, 24 catches, 492 yds, 3 TDs
Abington’s George Reid is the other high end receiver with 23 catches, 495 yds, 17.7 ave, and 4 Tds
CB South’s Cole Braccio has 23 grabs, 318 yds, 13.8 ave, and 3 TDs
Neshaminy’s Corey Joyce (missed several games 3 or 4, with a concussion), 6 grabs, 154 yds, 25.7 ave, 2 TDs and probably fits in the next grouping. Again, I have not seen the America Conference and do not have stats for them.
The OL is hard to say, so I’ll speak for Neshaminy, who I have seen every game only, and mention Council Rock North’s big tackle Pat Bartlet who has had some D1 looks. Neshaminy’s undersized center is technically excellent and warrants consideration for that. G Eddie Parry has battled hard all year and big Chris Wilson, who could use to be meaner is still a load to deal with at 6’5 290.
On Defense, again I will speak mostly for Neshaminy as stats are hard to find, and I only see teams once. With that in mind, Pennridge’s Nick Tarburton and Joe Robinson are excellent, and Tarburton is probably a first teamer. He should be joined by the Norris boys at CB South, Matt and Nate, and Noah Wood at Quakertown has a good reputation. Neshaminy’s Manzyk, Garlick and Dogba are more like safeties, covering receivers and blitzing the QB, mostly Manzyk and Garlick. North Penn’s Johns may fit in here too.
In the secondary, Neshaminy’s trio of Tredway at safety, and Jacob Gordon and Joel Stills at the corner spots has been excellent. Gordon shut out Abington’s Reid, in one on one coverage and has 5 or 6 interceptions. He is 6’2, fast and highly technical, and could be the best CB in SOL. Stills is fast, and closes on the ball quickly. He has many pass defenses and 1 or 2 interceptions. Tredway at 6’4 is huge, fast and excellent in one on one coverage.
North Penn’s Hubler and Henley are very good based on what I saw last year.
Abington’s Reid is excellent and dangerous if he gets a pick.
Last year, Ryan Cuthbert of Pennridge was good as well. This year, Pennridge’s entire secondary was scorched by Neshaminy receivers, particularly Manzyk.
On the D line, Neshaminy’s Kyle Ousterhoudt is their best interior player and the injured Luke Hitchens was their top end.
Of the Kickers, Pennridge’s Mauer was the best I have seen, followed by Neshaminy’s Dylan McDonald.
Maurer was far and away the best punter.
I look forward to seeing other posters adding their SOL top players.
