4A STATE Preseason Top 10

4A STATE Preseason Top 10

Here’s a preseason look at the 4As. Some of the information is from the ‘post season quick hits’ write ups, and some new information on the teams that look promising. The top two return largely veteran units that could meet again for the third consecutive year in the final. Others were very young last year with big numbers returning. Another group is the well-established powers like McKeesport, Central Valley and Thomas Jefferson who are always there despite grad losses. Plus there are new teams to watch like Pope John Paul II who were exciting last year with everyone back and Mars who is a veteran team now coached by Pine Richland’s former head coach Eric Kasperowicz. Up next, how the 3As are looking.

1 Bishop McDevitt D-3 13-1
Like the 5A listing, you could flip #1 and #2 with McDevitt replacing so many linemen and losing special talent along the DL in Riley Robell (6-5, 295, James Madison) and others. Those seeing the state final witnessed his personal joy in destroying Aliquippa’s O-line in full revenge mode from the previous year’s 34-27 defeat. The OL graduates Gabriel Arena (6-5, 285, Va Tech). But they return record setting quarterback Stone Saunders (69%-3583, 54/5, Mich, Pitt, TexAM. etc) entering his junior year, two standout freshman from last year in running backs Maurice Barnes and JC Crummel, receivers Rico Scott, Nevin Hopkins, Samuel Smalls and TE/DE Nick Slogik 6-5, 240, sr). Although the line took hits, they return juniors Tay’Qujuan Hughes (6-2, 295) and Thomas Godhart (6-5, 275), both well regarded with others. With at least eight starters/co-starters back on D, they may approach last year’s record 9ppg yield. They open with Mount St. Joseph (7-4, MIAA-A, Md) who play good stuff like Archbishop Spalding and Calvert Hall. Then it’s powerful DePaul Catholic (7-5, Super White-NJ) who play some of the best teams (North Jersey) in the East including Don Bosco, Paramus and Bergen Catholic before a home game with LaSalle (5-6). If McDevitt gets past DePaul, they’ll be unstoppable in the regular season. DePaul returns soph Qb Derek Zammit (6-1, 185) who went 6-1 after the starter went down, completing 65% for 1329 yards with a 12/4 ratio. They’ve won six state championships the last ten years and will be formidable at home.
2 Aliquippa D-7 13-1
Most of last year’s runner-up to Bishop McDevitt return, including senior quarterback Quentin Goode (52%-1929, 23/6), wide out Brandon Bancs (24-398, sr), running back Tiqwai Hayes (249-1954ry, 32Tds, jr) and the unheralded John Tracy (818ry, sr). Quite a backfield! Center Braylon Wilcox (5-11, 248, sr) and Tackle Kamari Matthews (6-4, 330, sr) return to the lines. Hayes already has 3732 rush yards through his sophomore season. At 5-11, 205, he is a load to tackle and will only get stronger. Last year’s junior linebacker Cameron Lindsey (6-2, 210) stood out with 105 tackles. The Quips jump right into it opening at home to Armstrong who is loaded if they find a quarterback, then at North Catholic who has everyone back. The NC game is something different being at JC Stone Field (North Park) rather than Mars where games were played from 2019-2022. Like McDevitt, if they get past the better and more seasoned teams at the top of their schedule they should roll.
3 Manheim Central D-3 11-2
This was a young team last year except at defense where a large part of that veteran group graduated. But the offense that averaged a record high 48ppg returns nearly intact. Qb Zac Hahn had a decent junior year completing 60% for 2210 with 29/15 ratio. His top receivers return in Aaron Enterline (42/994) and Bode Sipel (42/630). Lead back Brycen Arnold led all rushers with 265 carries for 2242 yards and 34 touchdowns making them loaded on offense. The D returns a core of 4-5 starters and many co-starters to build on. They’ll start out at home vs West Chester East then to Salesianum School (Wilmington-DE) for the MFC Classic. Salesianum is hosting the first annual Mid-Atlantic Pigskin Classic at Abessianio. Here they’ll play last year’s 3A champ Smyrna (12-1) who rocked Middletown in the final 48-0. Then comes a huge Lancaster-Lebanon crossover game with LL-4 power Cocalico (MC is LL-2), last year’s 5A semifinal loser to Pine Richland 34-12.
4 Bonner Prendergast D-12 11-2
Bonner won the Philadelphia Catholic League Blue Division last year then the 4A district crown defeating Interboro (10-4) 33-21 before losing to Crestwood (13-2) 21-14. They graduate quarterback Justin Shepherd (54%-1214) but return a lot of firepower in running backs Avery Hankey (1176) and Jaylen Johnson (393ry, 230py). Their leading receivers are back in Jalil Hall (33-602) and Austin Cannon (13-184). The D looks sound with seven starters back and three of their leading tacklers; Isaiah Session (MLB, #1-90), 6-5, 210 Mylacchi Williams (DE, #3-50) and Mick Johnson (S, # 5-37). Williams can be a force and terror along with Session on a unit that allowed on average 12ppg. They look particularly strong in the secondary. Bonner established itself as a power in the classification over the last four years with a 33-7 record. This includes wins against Roman Catholic, Archbishop Wood and last year topping Neumann Gorretti (11-4), one of the 3A powers from the PCL-Blue. This year, Neumann is taking on Cincinnati’s Elder!! Bonner opens with Salesianum School of Wilmington.
5 Central Valley D-7 11-2
Any team that has gone 136-31-0 since their school opened in 2010 (Monaca-Center merger) has to be well ranked despite another year of severe graduations. The Warriors have had one losing season in their history, with consecutive State Finals appearances in 2019, 2020 and 2021, winning Gold in ‘20 and ‘21. They also won Silver in 2014. All of this occurred under the guidance of their only coach, Mark Lyons. And at a school where they expect to win the state title every year, it will be interesting seeing how they follow up on last season where their only losses were to Aliquippa in the regular season 35-24 and again in the Wpial final 34-7. They enter this season minus the services of Qb Antwon Johnson (59%-1442, 12/8), running back Bret Fitzsimons (1731, 30Tds, 70 tackles) and the receiving corps of Jayvin Thompson (26-386) and Diniro Simpson (16-256), plus many from defense. But, Coach played a lot of people there and return at least ten with substantial playing time totaling 403 tackles. This includes six sophomores and two freshmen who got serious time with for example, 23 tackles, 71, 34, 47, 63, 60 etc. The schedule is typical, opening at Trinity and Avonworth before coming home to Hampton.
6 McKeesport D-7 11-2
The Tigers had another strong season only to have it short circuited by Aliquippa as it was the year before. Strong as the program is, that will remain an issue as long as the Quips are forced to play ‘up’ and the Tigers stay one-dimensional. For the coming season, they need to replace 1365 rush yards by Quarterback Jahmil Perryman and 553 pass yards. Bobby Boyd and Larry Gibson also graduate after rushing for 1117 and 520 respectively. But with a young line and the bottomless pit at running back, they’ll challenge again. Some of the linemen are TE/DE/OL Michael Sapos (6-4, 210, jr), C Brady Boyle (6-1, 245, sr), Jaydan Daniels (6-1, 265, sr), Courtney Dunn (6-2, 246, sr), Ryan Burtner (6-1, 275, sr) and Nicholas Winowitch (6-3, 235, sr). At running back, Anthony Boyd (5-8, 180, jr) will have a larger role after rushing for 230 yards on 24 carries as a sophomore. Look for the Tigers to get their 26th consecutive playoff appearance with Matt Miller in his 8th season with a 61-20 record since replacing the legendary George Smith in 2016. This season opens at home against West Mifflin then Penn Trafford before a road trip to Belle Vernon (12-2), last year’s 3A champ. BV beat Neumann Goretti (11-4) 9-8 in the final but lost to McKeesport in the regular season 14-6. With BV loaded again, the game will be a good barometer of 3A and 4A strength in the Wpial.
7 Pope John Paul II D-3 10-2
PJP-II was formed in 2010 as a result of a merger of Kennedy Kenrick and St. Pius X. They’ve been a steady winner and post season constant the last six years generating a 45-15 record. Last year’s team started off 9-0 before losing a close one to the Liberty Division champ Perkiomen Valley 21-14 in a PAC crossover game The other loss was in the district final at Interboro 38-14. But they should be a handful this season with nearly the entire team back on both sides of the ball; Seniors Qb Luke Terlesky (69%, 1896, 17/7), RB Boyd Skarbek (182/1193) and their top three receivers that averaged 34ppg are back with almost all the defense that allowed 15ppg. Six of their top seven tacklers return. Its surprising how well they performed last year with five sophomores and a freshman starting or co-starting. The opening slate sees them on the road their first three games at Chambersburg, Archbishop Ryan and Berks Catholic before coming home to Father Judge.
TIE
Lampeter Strasburg D-3 9-3

The Pioneers are a highly successful Lancaster area team with one losing season the past 24 years and an 82-38 mark the last ten. Last year’s team was a mild surprise, winning nine games in a major youth movement. Bottom line, most starters are back including quarterback Trent Wagner (60%, 1668, 21/5, 67-268ry) their leading rusher Carson Coleman (1110) and two of their top three receivers from a group that scored 35ppg! The D returns seven starters that allowed 14ppg. Last year’s team lost to Solanco (5A, 11-1) 40-35, Wyomissing (3A, 13-1) 21-0 and Manheim Central (4A, 11-2) 42-7! They look to be formidable. But will start the season on the road at Solanco then Penn Manor before the home opener against Kennard Dale.
8 Thomas Jefferson D-7 8-4
Thomas Jefferson fielded another strong team last year that put coach Bill Cherpak in the 300-win club with a record of 300-54, nine Wpial titles, and State Titles in 2004, 2007, 2008, 2019 and 2020. Last year’s team had another in a long list of strong O-Lines with Peyton Krueger (6-3, 275), Nick Florian (6-1, 270), Nathan Everley (6-6, 255), TE/DE Jordan Meyer (6-5, 230, 21-268py, 48 tackles, Wis), Brenden Fulmer (6-1, 270), etc, etc. They graduated. But they return a lot of skill in Qb Brody Evans (6-3, 195, sr, 58%-1986, 19/9) Rbs Elias Lippincott (6-2, 220, 909ry) and Aidan Whalen (542), and receiver Sean Sullivan (880py). And with their history of cranking out linemen, you’d think they’ll find a way. They open with home games against Baldwin and West Mifflin before a road trips to Latrobe and the real test at Belle Vernon.
9 Mars D-7 6-5
Mars looks like a team to keep an eye on after showing good potential last year with a young group that managed to score 32ppg. The problem was youth and a correspondingly bad defense allowing 27ppg. Even in defeat, they scored points, losing to good stuff verses Highlands (9-2) 54-22 and Armstrong (11-2) 58-31. Then there are the ones that got away, losing to Hampton (5-6) 49-42 and Blackhawk (4-7) 15-14. Games they will not likely lose this year. And finally, they were no match for McKeesport’s outstanding defense losing 43-0 to the 11-2 Tigers. The defense that played three sophomores and two freshman return seven starters plus their top three tacklers; LB Jacob Maple (6-2, 220, 106 stops), SS Mason Childress (5-11, 190, 92 stops) and DE Connor Hartle (5-11, 190, 73 tackles). They must be high on last year’s freshman who got time in Zach Dentel (6-0, 190, 8gs, 30 stops) and Ethan Kresinski (5-11, 175, 6gs, 16 tackles). And at the top is the former Pine Richland Coach Eric Kasperowicz. Knowing what he did at Pine Richland from 2013 through 2020 (85-18) where they won State Titles in 2017, 2020, 2022, and two runner-up Silver Medals in 2003 and 2014, look for ‘Coach K’ to alter the power structure in 4A and make Mars a legitimate threat in the classification. They open at home to Montour, then away at New Castle then home to Blackhawk.
10 Armstrong D-7 11-2

Armstrong’s season is all about how and if they replace quarterback Cadin Olsen who exceeded the 2000-yard mark in passing for three straight years, topped by last year’s 3210 yards at 64% while throwing 42-Tds against 13 picks. With six returning to the D that was scary young last year starting two sophs and a frosh, they should be ok. Especially as most of the O-skill return including running back Alex Patton (5-8, 210, 966ry), and receivers Ian Olsen (44/1074), Isaiah Brown (50/890) and Kyan Kline (57/558). Kline is quite an athlete, serving as back up Qb in 2021. Armstrong High has only been around for seven years reflecting the merger in 2016 of Ford City and Kittanning. Apart from the disastrous 1-8 season in 2019, they’ve gone 42-22. Last year’s team was their best to date with a prolific offense at 39ppg that hid a young and vulnerable defense allowing 19ppg. They had a strong game against Aliquippa the second game of the year losing 28-14, then crushed the next nine opponents before McKeesport who defeated them in the district quarterfinals 41-21. They open with Valley at home this year then get Aliquippa again after giving them a good game last year.
TIE
North Catholic D-7 4-6

North Catholic has had a super strong run from 2008 through 2021, going 133-41! Current coach Patrick O’Shea has a 55-16 mark since his hire in 2017 making them one of the most successful teams in the WPIAL. Last year’s team suffered growing pains of moving up in class to 4A with a young team. This year should show real improvement with almost the entire team returning including quarterback Jay Siket (46%-793, 7/9), running back Jack Fennell (106/595), all of the receiver corps and 7 starters on defense. The schedule is no joke opening with Serra Catholic (7-4) then Shady Side Academy (7-5) followed by home games against Aliquippa (13-1) and Highlands (9-2). There are no easy wins in the Greater Allegheny with Armstrong, an improved Highlands program and Mars now led by Coach K.
OTHERS:
Selinsgrove D-4 9-3
Jersey Shore D-4 12-1
Twin Valley D-3 7-5
Milton Hershey D-3 5-5
Bishop Shanahan D-1 4-6
Highlands D-7 9-2

2A STATE Preseason Top 10

2A STATE Preseason Top 10….6/8/23.

Here are teams to keep an eye on in the 2A Classification. There are a number of good deuces out there but not as many as last year with the classification’s power hitters graduating an inordinate amount of talented skill players. Here are a few examples. Historic powers or quality programs like Lakeland out of D2, Bedford from D5, Sto-Rox, Ligonier Valley, Beaver Falls, Neshannock and Keystone Oaks from D7 have all lost productive quarterbacks, and in most cases the entire backfield. Some of these more established programs are more likely to replace those losses. Teams like Bishop Guilfoyle and Steel Valley. But who knows as this is a write up meant more for disseminating information than ranking teams although I gave it a shot. Back in a few weeks with the 1A report.

1 Southern Columbia D4 13-3
Last year may have been coach Jim Roth’s best coaching job ever, lifting the Trojans from the depths of an unprecedented 3-2 start, to their 6th consecutive 2A state title! Along the way, they suffered blowout losses to Loyalsock Township (11-2) 27-10, Danville (12-1, 3A, D4) 49-14 and Mount Carmel (12-1) 35-21 before winning out to bring home the gold. Coach opted for some changes, tweaking the lineup and off they went with what was ironically their worst defense at 18ppg since 2010, and their lowest scoring offense at 40ppg, also since 2010. That team finished 10-3 scoring 37ppg, allowing 21, losing to Riverside’s best ever (14-2 D2) who lost to Clairton 36-30 in Hershey. For the coming season with their two top running backs accounting for 3373 rush years (Wes Barnes-1409, Braeden Wisloski 1964r-265p) graduating, Coach played a lot of people, three having at least 60 carries. Four experienced receivers return for quarterback Blake Wise (6-2, 170, sr, 48%-784, 7/8 ratio). Last year’s defense had numerous underclassmen as well. A sophomore, Dom Fetterolf, led the unit with 158 tackles. Three freshmen and five sophomores saw time on defense prepping for the graduation of five starters. The schedule is manageable opening with Berwick (5-7, 13-17 last 3) and Shamokin (one +500 yr since 2004) before an emotion charged game at Loyalsock (11-2). The Lancers are loaded this year in 3A and beat them last year in Catawissa 27-10.
2 Farrell D10 10-2
The big news out west in this classification is last year’s ‘outlier’ Westinghouse (14-1, Pitt City), who could have competed a few classes higher was wiped out with graduations. Combining that with Farrell returning big numbers should get them deep into the playoffs this year. The return many from the team that beat local powers Grove City (9-4) 46-15 and Sharpsville (9-3) 48-7 and 26-0 in the playoffs, while beating troublesome teams like Sharon and Slippery Rock, both 6-5. And they almost beat Ursuline (10-3, Youngstown) losing 40-38. For 2023 they return quarterback Kabron Smith (66%-1919, 22/6) and their running backs, Brandon Chambers (156-1026, sr) and Juelz Johnson (23-210, so). Three experienced receivers return although they graduated their leading receivers who accounted for 75 receptions for 1432 yards. The defense that is always a team strength (13ppg last year) needs rebuilt but returns their top tackler Marion Norris (5-11, 205, sr) with 113 and six other co-starters with lineman Malachi Green (5-11, 320, sr), Harry Parker (5-11, 255, jr), Marcel Cheeks (6-2, 285, sr) and others. They open the season at North East (Erie) and Harding High in Ohio, then home to Grove City.
3 Mount Carmel D4 12-2
Unlike Southern Columbia, Mount Carmel got off to a fast start with wins against perennial powers North Schuylkill 25-17, Dunmore 42-14 and Southern Columbia 35-21 before running into the Tigers again in the postseason for another rematch-revenge-rival game where they were pummeled 48-14. Were it not for Southern Columbia, it’d likely be about MCA with their 42-10 record since 2018 (10-3, 10-3, 10-3, 12-1) excluding covid’s 2-4 season. They may have been eclipsed by Southern but remain one of the great Pennsylvania stories with state titles in 1994, 96, 98, 2000 and 2002, and a runner-up silver medal in 1999. For this season, they return senior quarterback Cole Spears (70%-1218, 14/6) and two experienced back-ups in junior Matt Balichik (22/36-61%-538 6/0, 17/101ry) and Gavin Marshalek (6-0, 170, soph, 21/38-55%-429 5/1) making them set there. Lead back Xavier Diaz (92/999ry, 17/230py) and Luke Blessing (92/654, 7/109py) return with lead receiver Jacob Schultz (23/539). This group averaged 43ppg! If they can replace losses on the DL in Co-Captain DTs Nick Nestico (6-2, 285) and Matt Sccicchitano (6-4, 275), and NG Kelin Geary (6-0, 250), they’ll be fine. Last year’s sophomore Noah Shimko (6-5, 300, 29 tackles) and freshman Logan Herb (6-3, 265, 16 tackles) will step into greater roles while a veteran line-backing corps returning their first and second units could dominate, led by Drew Yagodzinskie (6-0, 185, jr, 85 tackles), Jacob Schultz (6-2, 190, sr, 64 tackles), Al Bailey (5-11, 205, jr, 59 tackles) and speedy Ben Miller (5-8, 160, jr, 48 tackles). The schedule starts with a bang against two of the area’s power teams in North Schuylkill (10-3, 3A, D11) at home then a trip to Dunmore (8-4, 2A, D2) giving a glimpse at the power structure in three districts and two classifications.
4 Trinity D3 10-5
Trinity is one tough Double-A, now moving into the ranks of teams that need to be noticed. No one is confusing them with West Catholic’s great teams just over a decade ago that went 105-31 from 2002 through 2011. But they’re getting there. The Shamrocks matured before your eyes last year after nine years of losing football at 22-64, going 5-0 against other AA teams while outscoring them 234 to 68. This excludes the State Semifinal loss to Southern Columbia 42-7. They also got pounded by Roman Catholic (9-3), Wyomissing (13-1) and West Perry (11-2) by a combined score of 115-42. Point being, they played them. Steel High (13-1) who won the Single-A title last year had to go overtime to beat them 35-28. And they won ‘Districts’ with a crush job of Annville Cleona (8-4) 58-27. Many from that team return (all skill) including last year’s freshman Messiah Mickens (5-11, 195, 961ry, 17/200py) who already has offers from Michigan, Alabama, Ohio St and others. Quarterback Caleb Wray (6-3, 180, sr, 56%-1057 13/7) is back. Additionally, Christian Joy (59-667) and Cole Cappawana (22-241ry,17/333py) join Mickens in the backfield with Tanie Young (6-0. 170, jr, 16/239py) on the flank. The D returns nine starters who were painfully young last year starting or co-starting two freshmen and four sophomores. This year’s schedule is again challenging opening with Delone Catholic (7-4), then Moore Catholic (9-3, Staten Island) who beat Conwell Egan last year 20-7, followed by Wyomissing and West Perry. All four are home.
5 Steel Valley 12-1
The guys from Munhall know how to play football with a ten-year record of 85-26 and a State Title in 2016 where they demolished Southern Columbia 49-7. Two years later they advanced to the state semifinal losing to Wilmington. And they’ve been close the last two years with a 11-1 mark in 2021. This year’s team was again loaded, but not as loaded as Westinghouse who beat them in the State Semifinal 27-6. Quarterback Cruce Brookins was a talent, rushing for 1716 yards with 34 touchdowns and passing for 785 yards at 50% with a 7/1 ratio. He graduates. But last year’s freshman Da’ron Barksdale (5-9, 170, 4/5/80py, 12 games) and sophomore Antonio Brey (5-10, 160, 13/20/258py, 7 games) got time. They also return running backs Donald Barksdale (5-8, 160, jr, 86-927ry, 7/162py) and Quaron Pierce (5-9, 185, sr, 61/614ry) and experienced receivers. The line will rebuild around starter Michael Crist (6-3, 285, sr) and others including Joe Ketterman (6-3, 310, sr) and Rasaun Hough (6-2, 235, sr). The defense graduated some key parts in run stuffer Greg Smith (6-5, 315, 65 tackles), four linebackers totaling 282 tackles and two from the secondary. But, they worked in a lot of underclassmen, playing two freshmen, four sophomores and seven juniors who accounted for 391 tackles. So they’re experienced. Whether they can play at last year’s level allowing 9ppg is another matter. They open the season at Charleroi, home to Sto Rox then Seton LaSalle on the road.
6 Berlin Brothersvalley D5 11-1
Berlin has one of the top programs in the state led by Coach Doug Paul since 2002 going 122-30 the last 13 years. Last year’s team was young, going undefeated in the regular season with eight shutouts before getting crushed by Westinghouse 59-7, the 2A runner-up. Most of that team returns including dual threat quarterback Pace Prosser (6-1, 180, 59%-1789, 24/5, 81-532ry), four running backs and half the defense. They could be very special this year scoring 40ppg last year (best ever) with a D that allowed 8. At 8ppg, the D was special and will be again if they replace DE Holby McClucas (6-2, 210, 80 tackles), OLB Grant Mathias (6-0, 200, 50 tackles) and DT Cory Jose (5-11, 240, 45 stops. Some of the returning linemen are 6-0 240, 5-11 280, 6-2 330, 6-0 250, 6-0, 275 and 6-3 290. They should open at 3-0 playing Claysburg-Kimmel, Mount Union and Everett before getting into it at Laurel (9-2, Wpial) and one of the better Single-A teams in south central Pa in Northern Bedford County (11-1, D5).
7 Richland Township D6 11-1

Richland is on a roll with some great talent coming through the school winning 56 games out of their last 63! Last year’s team reeled off their first 11 games, getting through a number of close call wins against HIGH quality comp including Martinsburg Central (12-3) 35-28, Bedford (7-4), 25-23 and Penn Cambria (9-2) 49-42 before running into Bishop Guilfoyle (10-4) in the playoffs, losing 32-22. For 2023, they have to replace their talented quarterback Sam Penns (68%-2113, 24/4, 97-506ry), a HUGE hole. But they return Rb Evan McCracken (1422ry, 28-438py), wide out Austin Yarnick (42-879) and seven to the defense. The D includes DT Declan Piscatello (6-3, 270, jr, 75 tackles), Brodie Hollis (6-0, 225, soph, 46 tackles) and 349 more tackles from 7 other starters and co-starters. They open at home against Penn Cambria (9-2) then away at Huntingdon (2-8) then Johnstown rival Westmont Hilltop (4-6) who always battles, losing last year 21-14.
8 Bishop Guilfoyle D6 10-4
Using the full resume to rank the Marauders this high after severe grads. Here goes. They’ve been on a run with 11 straight winning seasons that includes three consecutive 1A state titles (2014-15-16) and two runner-up trophies (2019-21) totaling 126 wins against 21 losses! The run started in 2012 when Bishop McCort’s Crimson Crushers (Johnstown) got out of the way after their hot run from 2004 through 2012, going 91-31 with a Silver Medal in 2009. For the coming season, BG has to replace one of their ‘best ever’ at quarterback in Karson Kiesewetter. He had a heck of a year passing for 2018 yards at 66% with a 18/7 ratio AND rushing for 1560-yards on 224 carries for another 31 touchdowns. That’s 3678 yards and 39 touchdowns that need replaced. Add to that running back Cooper Rother’s 903 rush years and 48 receptions for 670 yards for another 1570 yards lost to graduation. They broke in some young ones with a good looking sophomore quarterback in Chase Kissell (6-1, 180, jr, 20/33/61%-198py, 23/215ry). But that’s a big hole along with three other receivers with 67 receptions for 998 yards. They also lost some major players from the D but saw six sophomores and one freshman getting serious time. DL Joe Eckenrode (6-1, 250) now a junior had 100 tackles. Qb Chase Kessell had 58 with DBs Trent Adams and Hamilton Gates getting 27 and 25 respectively. Other big returns are seniors LB Kaden Wyandt (5-10, 190, sr), their top stopper at 149 tackles and DL’s Tyson Bridenbaugh (5-11, 225) and Joey Hostler (5-10, 235) with 86 and 53 tackles. They opening schedule is Bald Eagle Area (6-4), Bishop McCort (2-8) and Bellefonte (1-9) where the D should give the offense time to develop unless BEA’s Qb Chase Nagle (6-1, 190, jr) is ‘on’ in the opener after winging it for 2810 yards last year at 65% and 29/12 ratio as a sophomore.
9 Troy D4 9-3
Troy was a load last year as evidenced by a competitive loss to 1A power Canton (12-2), 28-14, who lost to 1A champ Steelton Highspire 28-21. They also had a 36-35 loss to 3A Loyalsock (11-2), who beat Berks Catholic, Southern Columbia and had a 3-point loss to Danville (12-1, 3A) who lost to Wyomissing in the postseason on a missed field goal. That’s impressive, with a super young team starting or co-starting a freshman and four sophomores on offense and six sophomores and two frosh on defense. 2023 sees almost all of that team returning including junior quarterbacks Evan Woodward (26/50/442py/52%, 5/5, 80/588ry) and Joe Frye (11/26/198py/69%,1/0). Clayton Smith leads a large contingent of returning backs with 1410 yards. The receiver corps graduated one with the defense returning all by two starters. The lines are good with Jed Feldmeier (6-1, 245), James Dyke (5-9, 275, so), Zeppelin Tharp (6-4, 280, sr) and Eason Teriburg (6-3, 200, jr) and Evan Osgood (5-8, 200, sr). They open at home in a test against 4A Juniata (8-4), then away at Montoursville and home to North Penn.
10 Central Clarion D9 10-2
Central Clarion is the result of a football co-op/merger of Clarion, Clarion-Limestone and North Clarion in 2020. They call themselves the Wildcats in honor of a company of infantry so named and formed during the Civil War who fought in the major Eastern Theater’s battles in the Army of the Potomac including Gettysburg in the 105th PA Regt of the 3rd Corps. Back to the team; they played like Wildcats last year, winning their first nine games before losing to Redbank Valley (1A, 9-2) 47-38. But they won the district title the following week beating Brookville (6-6) 35-0 before losing to Westinghouse 44-8 in States. Sophomore Jase Ferguson emerged at quarterback (56%-2727, 33/15, 122-521ry). He loses his top receiver Ashton Rex (63-1556) but return two of their top three rushers and most of the defense that started eight sophomore starters/co-starters and two freshmen. They open at Brookville (6-6) then home to Port Allegany (12-2) before a road trip at Union/AC Valley (5-6).
TIE
10 Washington D7 7-5

Washington is one of those strong programs you hear very little about. It’s been awhile but they won a AA State Title in 2001 at 15-0 defeating Pen Argyl (14-1, D11) 19-12, then a runner up trophy in 1993 losing to Dallas 31-7. The 2017 team at 13-2 lost in the semifinal to Wilmington 49-42. But they’re still piling up the wins at 128-32 since the last loser in 2008. This year’s team has good returns with Qb Logan Carlisle (57%-865, 9/0, jr), sophomore lineman Joe Wilson (6-3, 235), Rb Zach Welsh (506ry, sr), DBs Zxavian Willis and Reuben Gordon. Everyone plays both ways. Young as they were, they had their moments, rocking Greensburg CC (8-3) 55-27, Clairton (6-6, down year) 48-20, splitting with Serra Catholic (7-4) then getting edged in the playoffs 30-27 by Neshannock (11-2), showing good progress keeping that one close. Only Sto Rox (10-3) shut them down last year winning 36-0, although they still averaged 41ppg. Some of their offensive point totals were 48, 49, 54, 55, 59, 61 and 62 points. The losses came against quality teams including Serra 7-4, Sto 10-3, Keystone Oaks 8-3, McGuffey 8-3 and Neshannock 11-2. This year’s schedule will test them early, opening at Monessen (6-5) then homers against Clairton (6-6) and Serra (7-4) before going back on the road at Greensburg CC (8-3).

WRESTLING: Jeff Karam Steps Down at Bethlehem Catholic

Big news this morning as Jeff Karam is stepping down after 15 seasons as the head coach of the Golden Hawks. Karam coached 24 individual state champions, third most in Pennsylvania history, and his teams have won nine state dual championships (most all time) and have finished first in the individual tournament seven times (second). Karam has coached three NCAA finalists (Mike Labriola, Zeke Moisey, and Darian Cruz) and one NCAA champion (Cruz). This past season, Becahi set a Lehigh Valley record with 139 points in the individual tournament, the third highest total ever in 3A. They will return ten starters, including three state champions, in 2023-24.

This is not the first time Karam has walked away. He resigned in 2018 to spend time watching his sons wrestle, but his replacement, Rick Thompson, was dismissed midway through the year and Karam came back on as the interim coach, then was rehired as the full time coach and the program did not miss a beat. Before Bethlehem Catholic, Karam was the head coach at Freedom High School in Bethlehem, where he coached for fourteen years and had five state medalists.

The hire here will be very interesting. Former Becahi state champ and Lehigh All American Randy Cruz has had a hand in Becahi’s club and off-season training, and it would not surprise me for Karam to hand it off to him (Randy’s father has been Karam’s top assistant). Former Northampton medalists and Drexel NCAA qualifier Steve Mytych has been involved for various Lehigh Valley wrestling jobs and it would not shock me if he threw his hat in the ring. Former Easton state finalist and Lehigh NCAA qualifier Seth Ciasulli runs Red Hawk wrestling, the biggest and most successful club in the Valley, which has been a feeder to Becahi, and it would not shock me for Seth to be interested in the high school gig. I’m sure there are other names and guys outside the area who will be very interested. Becahi is a perennial top 10 team nationally as the major private school in arguably the most densely populated talent rich area in the country. For those interested in the sport, will really be something to watch.

5A STATE Preseason Top 15

5A STATE Preseason Top 15
Here’s a best guesstimate of this year’s top 5A teams. What stood out was the number of teams doing big rebuilds or with a new staff. High end teams like Strath Haven, Upper Dublin, Plymouth Whitemarsh, Shippensburg, Exeter, Solance, Warwick and more. Penn Trafford and Franklin Regional return some good parts but both lose good dual threat quarterbacks. Whitehall (7-6) returns a quarterback but doesn’t like to play defense any more than North Penn does. And they have a new staff. Etcetera, etcetera! Lots of change out there and who knows how it all shakes out. Scroll well down to see the post season reviews for more detail done for each area a few weeks/months ago.
**** the schedules are as of this posting.
1 Imhotep Charter School D-12 10-3
The Panthers return a pile of bodies that in a ‘combined’ State Top-10 would likely have them in the 2 slot behind St. Joseph’s Prep, with a few of the following 5As not far behind. Here are a few of their returning starters; QB Mikal Davis (6-0, 200, 1787py, sr), RB Jabree Coleman (6-1, 185, 1040ry, jr ), TE Johann Hennigan (6-1, 225, 22-372, sr), OT Zafir Stewart (6-5, 330, sr), DTs Jahsear Whittingham (6-2, 280, sr) and David Johnson (6-1, 270, sr), DE Zahir Mathis (6-6, 230, jr), CBs Naim Dantzler-jr, Kenny Woseley-sr and more. About the schedule, unless they schedule a game for August, they begin as they did last year (minus McDevitt of Harrisburg) with a tough opening slate at the Haverford School (10-0) followed by Archbishop Spalding (11-1) and Malvern Prep (8-2). Both Spalding and Malvern are revenge games at the super site. Those three will tell all with Haverford School returning one of the best O-Lines in the area, Spalding with one of the top QBs in Malik Washington (6-5, 200, +3000, 60%, 30/8) and Malvern Prep being Malvern Prep.
******** Edited to include classes and starting DLs Andre Cooper (5-11, 255, sr) and Raheem Reid (6-2, 220, sr).
2 Pine Richland D-7 13-3
Pine Richland faces the coming season without Ryan Palmieri who gave them one of the greatest single season performances in the area’s history, rushing for 1929 rush yards (24-Tds), completing 69% of his passes for 1104 yards (10-Tds) and catching eight passes for 92 yards. He had 92 tackles on defense. For the coming season, they’re thin in returning starters with five by my count but played a number of people last year winning games by an average score of 30-15. That was invaluable experience playing extra games by advancing to and winning the 5A title against a schedule with only one losing team. Another plus, this is year-2 of Coach Jon LeDonne’s system to see things are not so dismal as many suppose. And hey, it’s Pine Richland who has won three state titles the last six years and two runner-up trophies despite turmoil in the coaching staff. With a record of 100-21 the last nine years, they’ve established themselves as one of the premier programs in the state. They open at Pickerington North who has most of their skill back. Then Kiski and Penn Hills at home in a key 5A-North East Conference game.
3 Cathedral Prep D-10 8-3
Put the Ramblers a slot below Pine Richland per their close loss to them last year in the quarterfinals, 21-14 and decent returns. Prep had a 14-0 lead in that one but Pine had quarterback Palmieri….!....and a score in the last 2:01 to get the win. For the coming season, junior quarterback Luke Costello (51%, 1262, 13/4) who started from the Solon game on (replaced veteran Carter Barnes) is back with running back Dajoure Hollinsworth who rushed for 856 yards on 87 carries after replacing the injured Suhtaun Lewis. Their schedule largely mimics last years playing the usual Canadian and New York teams, Erie’s 6As McDowell and Erie High, with a few Ohio teams sprinkled in. Archbishop Hoban (Akron, 14-2) is again on the schedule, losing in the Div-II final last year to Central Catholic of Toledo 28-21 after routing Prep 47-14 in Akron. Following the Hoban opener at Cathedral, they play Canisius-Buffalo then always tough St. Francis-Hamburg who beat them last year 28-26.
4 Gateway D-7 7-4
Gateway edged Penn Hills vs ‘same opponents’ (Woody, NHills, PCC, Nor) going 3-1 to 1-3 and with a better average score of 24-14 vs 21-19. For 2023, the return of quarterback Brad Birch (61%-2024, 20/13) and Jaquon Reynolds (159-654ry, 32-324py) along with TE Remy Bose (6-1, 220), guards Chase Gabriel (6-1, 275) and Jake Santo (6-3, 260), and a well-regarded junior class now in their senior year says the Gators will be a major player in the ‘Wpial’ and perhaps beyond. The defense was ok at 17ppg knowing they had the 41-17 blowout to McKeesport, allowing 14ppg in all other games. The opening schedule is difficult at Mt. Lebanon who will be gunning for them losing last year (opener) in Monroeville 21-6. Then comes another big game at Woodland Hills. The home opener is against North Hills who they edged 20-17 last year.
5 Bethel Park D-7 10-2
The Blackhawks just completed their best season since the 2009 edition that also went 10-2 on the heels of the title run the year before where they finished 15-1 with a 28-21 ot loss to Liberty in the State Final. To some degree, the success of 2022 was expected with a pile of starters back except at quarterback (Max Blanc-Youngstown). Unfortunately, the season ended with a revenge/rematch loss to Upper St. Clair, 17-7. 2023 will hinge in part on how last year’s sophomore quarterback Tanner Pfeiffer (64%-1498, 14/8) matures. Also returning is well-regarded junior Ryan Petras with 44 receptions for 578 yards and 89 rushing attempts for 578 yards. But they have key people to replace beginning with OL Braeden Del Duca (6-2, 260), and two-way talents in FB/LB Gavin Moul (113-619ry, Delaware, 6-1 225), RB/S Austin Caye (175/787, Qb’d the D, Dayton?), TE/OLB Aiden Currie (17-210) and WR/DB Dinari Clacks (18-289). The cupboard is not bare, with the return of senior lineman Jake Brown (6-0, 285), Dylan Prindle (6-4, 245) and TE Clancy Orie (6-3, 220, jr), the impressive sophomore from last year. NG Brady Remington (5-1, 195, sr, OL?) is also back with MLB Rob Lakandula (6-1, 235, FB?). The schedule is challenging but manageable opening at North Hills, home to Mt. Lebanon then a major test at Central Catholic.
6 Penn Hills D-7 5-5
Looking back over last year’s results combined with this year’s returns says the 6-spot may too low for this group. Coach Charles Morris kept them competitive despite a number of tight losses that could have seen them throw in the towel. They didn’t, losing to Pittsburgh Central Catholic 33-28 in game #8 and closing at Woodland Hills in a 7-3 loss. Nail biting losses to Seneca Valley 17-15 and North Hills 27-26 prevented a 9-1 season. With quarterback Julian Dugger (55%-1342, 537ry) and running back Amir Key with 1249 yards returning and the other side well stocked, the game with Pine Richland takes on even more significance as it may preview the Wpial final. They open at home vs Seneca Valley then on the road to Norwin then the key early season game at Pine Richland Sept 8th.
7 Roman Catholic D-12 9-3
Here’s a team that ‘could have been’ had they eked past Imhotep instead of losing 14-6 in the district final. How exciting would a game with Pine Richland have been if Roman had gone on to defeat Whitehall and Upper Dublin? Maybe this year. They fielded one of their best defenses in many years, allowing 12ppg with seven opponents held to ten points or less. Although they lose some key pieces of that defense (top 4 tackles) they return two DLs and a veteran secondary. Offensively, they look good with the return of quarterback Semaj Beals (58%-1774) and outstanding receivers Tyseer Denmark (53/892, Oregon commit) and Trey Woodley (15/235). They open at home to Wilson (8-3, D3), then Lincoln (8-5, Philly Public), then a war with Episcopal Academy (9-1) of the Inter-Academic League who is loaded!
8 Woodland Hills D-7 6-6
Woodland Hills is a true 3A playing up. That was revealed last year with numbers issues and a youthful team that was blown out 48-14 by Penn Trafford, 38-23 to Highlands, 35-21 to Pine Richland and shutout by Gateway 21-0. But they ended strong beating good Penn Hills and Franklin Regional teams before losing competitively to Pine in a playoff rematch 23-12. They played a number of sophomores and a few freshmen last year. Those playing prominent roles were quarterback Cam Walter (48%-853, 7/10), running back Frankie Keyes (99-515) and wide out Will Smith (36-325). Brandon Jones (102-527) also returns with Andre Smith. Despite numbers, they seem to always have a massive line. Last year’s came in at 279 and return Majuan Rose (6-3, 285) and Pierce Cannon (6-5, 300). Last year’s finish was something to build on with all the youth returning, youth that will be tested right up front in games against Central Catholic, Gateway and Penn Trafford. All are home games.
9 Upper St. Clair D7 10-3
Like Bethel Park above, USC also had their best season in years, going back to 2013’s 11-1 season. Still, they lost home games to Bethel Park 27-14 and Canon McMillan 28-24. They avenged the Bethel loss in the playoffs 17-7 then lost to Pine Richland 34-3 to end the season. With big holes to fill on the line (Ehase, Kirk, Banbury, Lapinski, Howe) and big numbers from the defense, the rebuild looks good knowing it will be in the hands of two outstanding quarterbacks in junior Julian Dahlem (63%-980, 16/4) and sophomore Ethan Hellmann (65%-907, 9/3). Otherwise it’s new skill at receiver where the top three graduate taking 72 receptions for 1371yds including Aidan Besselman (6-3 190, 41-818, 41 tackles) plus running back Jamaal Brown (200-1484). The defense will rebuild around standout sophs from last year in LB Vince Hellmann (6-1, 190, 65 tackles) and DE Nate Stohl (6-3, 240, 50 tackles) and two-way senior lineman Mark Carone (6-4, 250, 21 tackles). The talent shown at quarterback last year should set the Panthers up for the coming season and the next few years.
10 Peters Township D-7 6-4
Peters Township is a program that might sneak by you if you didn’t notice they’re 56-21 since TJ Plack took over in 2016. His best was 2019’s 12-2 team that lost in the WPIAL final to Gateway 20-19. Coach has turned the program around after a five-year stint at South Fayette going 30-18. Last year’s team was young with only five seniors and should be a major player this year with quarterback Chris Cibrone (58%-1974py, 19/7) back plus four of their top five receivers, along with all of last year’s sophomores and juniors now a year older. This is the group that averaged 31ppg! Last year was a strange year with tight losses to USC 17-10, Lebo 6-3 and Bethel 27-21, as well as the shocker to C-Mac 26-7? They should get off to another strong start (6-1 last year) opening at home to Fox Chapel, Seneca Valley then away at Trinity. PT could be a real surprise this year.
11 Delaware Valley D-2 7-6
Delaware Valley’s young team played a typical Warrior slate scheduling Mosley of Florida (5-5, Panhandle area), Harrisburg (11-3) and Downingtown East (9-4) last year, losing all three. But they hung tough with Mosley losing 24-23 and Downingtown losing 28-20 while getting clobbered by the Cougars 32-3. The other high quality opponents were LFC-Division 1 champ Valley View (10-3), one of the top 4As in the state who they beat 41-27, and Scranton Prep (9-4), one of the top 3As who edged them 20-13. Not bad for a young group. This year’s team graduated but 11 seniors and return almost everyone. This includes senior quarterback Tyler Bird (80/166-49%, 1136 7/11), the coach’s son junior quarterback Logan Olsommer (43/80-54%, 459, 3/2), the #2 back Ryder Machado (719) and two leading receivers from a unit that averaged 24ppg. Looks like there could be a quarterback battle! The D that allowed 20ppg graduated four starters but returns their top three tackles (96, 102, 143!), seven starters and at least five co-starters. This year’s schedule will again reveal them early, opening at Selinsgrove before the home opener against Harrisburg and a road trip to Downingtown East, all of which are expected to field powerful teams.
12 Rustin D1 11-2
For a ‘new’ program opening in 2006, few teams had the success Rustin has generating one of the best records in the state at 146-52 while finishing second in the district playoffs three consecutive years. Mike St. Clair has been their only coach. Last year’s team went to overtime to beat Strath Haven in the postseason 28-27 after losing to them the preceding year 34-33, also in overtime. A 21-7 loss to Upper Dublin in the district final brought the season to a close. And that was with a young team. Two sophomores stood out in quarterback David McLain and running back Chase Hutton (5-9, 190, 1222ry). With Strath Haven, Upper Dublin and other power teams in major rebuilds, look for the Golden Knights to get over the hump and finally win districts. The schedule mimics last year’s opening at Henderson and West Chester East, then home against Kennett.
13 Cocalico D-3 10-5
The Eagles somehow conjured up a 10-win season with a relatively young group of juniors, with a few seniors, sophomores and a freshman mixed in. And they won the district title! That youth showed up in losses to the top teams on the schedule against Solanco (11-1), Manheim Central (11-2), Lampeter Strasburg (9-3) and Wyomissing (13-1), before rallying for a 7-1 finish and date in the semifinal where they lost to Pine Richland (13-3) 34-12. Those teams had a combined record of 57-9, making the youthful Eagles one battle tested bunch! With most of last year’s team returning including the entire backfield with senior running back Sam Steffey (309-1829ry) headlining, look for another serious run. One thing is certain, the pecking order in the district will be sorted out early opening with a road game at Warwick followed by homers against Solanco and Manheim Central.
TIE
Whitehall 5A D11 7-6

Whitehall won their 4th district title in the last seven years by routing Southern Lehigh (9-3) in the district final at Catasauqua 43-17! Then came a somewhat misleading score verses Delaware Valley, scoring 17 4th quarter points for the 34-13 win in States. This was followed by a 55-7 drubbing at the hands of Imhotep (10-3) where they looked out of position on some series and a step slow.
The big news for the coming season is the retirement of four-year coach Matt Senneca (17-26, two district titles), with Andy Marino stepping in. Marino was the Line Coach at Elon College and is a Neshaminy grad. This year’s team will then be something of a mystery with the new staff and a rebuild. But they return quarterback Trey Dogmanits (167/291-57%, 1997py, 22/14 ratio) who can be a load when on. Two of their leading receivers are also back making the priority issues appear to be the defense that was senior oriented. This year’s opening slate resembles last year with the homer to Pocono Mountain East followed by Bethlehem Catholic then Easton. Actually the entire schedule is a workout with no breathers in the EPC-South.
14 Southern Lehigh D-11 9-3
Southern Lehigh opened with a disappointing 42-28 loss at Quakertown last year before reeling off eight straight including a 29-28 win at Notre Dame (9-3). It was a young group that were overmatched against Northwestern Lehigh, losing 45-7 then to Whitehall 43-17 in the 5A district final. For 2023, a pile of bodies returns including running back Cade Sawyer (1346), quarterback Christopher Fritts (39/67-513), three of their top four receivers and half the defense. The 9-3 campaign was a nice response to 2022’s 4-7 season, their first losing season since 2007. They open again this year against Quakertown then Notre Dame before the home opener against Bangor. They’re a steady winner in the district that with any kind of development will be far more competitive this season.
15 Marple Newtown D1 6-6
Here’s a group that was super young last year and still managed a 6-6 record, a 26-19 PF-PA average with 1, 1, 3 and 3 point losses! That close to a 10-2 record! But you have to start winning some of those games, or forever stay in the shadow of Strath Haven where they’ve gone 1-4 the last five years, 0-2 vs Ridley and 0-3 vs G-Val over the same period. Quarterback Dave Bertoline returns with his big tackle Andrew Kirlin (6-6, 305, PSU, OU, etc) and most of last year’s starters. They open with road games at Boys Latin then Radnor before coming home to play Upper Darby. Their 61-31 won/loss the last eight years says they’re knocking on the door.

3A STATE Preseason Top 10

3A State Preseason Top 10
Here are ten teams that standout and should make a lot of noise this season. Some of the established powers like Wyomissing (13-1) had tremendous grad losses, wiping out nearly the entire team. Same with Danville (12-1) plus their coach. Martinsburg Central’s powerful 12-3 team was ravaged, losing a record setting quarterback responsible for 4759 total yards and a receiver who tallied 1675 yards! Both Danville and the Scarlet Dragons fielded their best teams ever. With so many veteran teams in the classification, it looks like a wide open race for the triple-A crown.

1 Belle Vernon D7 12-2
Who would have picked the Leopards to win the State Title last year opening at 1-2? But they were competitive losses to quality teams, losing to McKeesport (11-2) 14-6 and Penn Trafford (6-5) 14-13. From there, they ran out, winning their next 11 games with impressive playoff wins against Avonworth (11-2) 24-7, Martinsburg Central (12-3) 24-17 (the team I thought might take it) and Neumann Goretti (11-2) 9-8 on a goal line stand with time running out. With almost all that team returning, they could repeat if they navigate another front loaded schedule including three road games; Franklin Regional, Laurel, Penn Trafford. The home games are challenging against McKeesport and Thomas Jefferson. Some of the returning starters are Qb Braden Laux (6-5, 215, 52%-1025py, 11/6 ratio, 482ry), Rbs Quinten Martin (1279ry, 28-424py #1 receiver, 4 picks) and Jake Gedekoh (773ry), plus big numbers from the defense.
2 Neumann Goretti D12 11-3
The Saints like BVA above appear loaded with returning skill despite the graduation of running back Shawn Battle. He ended the year at 916 rush yards while missing the State Final and sitting out the Thanksgiving Day game against Southern (So. Philly). Most of their leading tacklers also return. They played a wicked slate last year against Bonner (11-3), Conwell Egan (6-5) x 2, Scranton Prep (9-4), Northwestern Lehigh (11-3) and Wyomissing (13-1) before losing 9-8 in the final on a failed 3rd and goal/fumble vs Belle Vernon. The schedule this year show them opening at Cincinnati Elder (10-3), then at Penn Charter (5-5) before the home opener against Lansdale Catholic (7-3). Elder is from the renown Greater Catholic League of Cincinnati (Moeller, St. X, LaSalle), and they’re rebuilding, losing eight starters representing 492 tackles from the D and their leading producers at QB (68%-1794py, 665ry), #1 Rb (836yr, 226py) and Wr (803py), making it a good year to play them.
3 Notre Dame D11 9-3
All that kept Notre Dame from a 12-0 slate and a deeper run were tight losses to Southern Lehigh (9-3) 29-28, Northern Lehigh (12-3) 40-33 and Northwestern Lehigh (11-3) 35-34 in the district semifinal. And that was with a young group. For 2023, with one of the most exciting dual threat quarterbacks in the state in Danny Darno (6-2, 190, sr) and most of last year’s starters back, look for them to reverse those losses and then who knows. Last year saw Darno throw for 2669 yards at 67% with a 33/7 Td to Pick ratio while rushing for 1180 yards. All other skill returns along with half the D led by the #1 tackler DE Dainn Vassllo (6-2, 225) with 165 tackles. They open at Southern Lehigh then consecutive homers against Tamaqua and Salisbury.
4 Loyalsock Township D4 11-2
The Lancers also return an exciting dual threat quarterback in Tyler Gee (62%-2627py, 27/8 ratio, 586ry), his top receiver Jalen Andrews (1161) and most of the defense. Gone are Davion Hill’s 1876 rush yards. At 6-2, 215, Hill was a brute. In much the same way Notre Dame had trouble with schools named ‘Lehigh’, Loyalsock’s nemesis was Danville (12-1) who beat them 17-14 in the regular season and 41-20 in the district final. This year’s schedule looks like last year’s with a season opening home game against Berks Catholic followed by a road game at Hughesville. Then its two homers against Southern Columbia and Danville to set the stage for the rest of the season.
5 North Schuylkill D11 11-3
The Spartans had another successful season hitting double digits in the win column for the fourth time in five years. Although it began with a tough 25-17 loss to Mount Carmel (12-1) in the opener and a mid-season loss at Notre Dame 36-24, they breezed past all others by an average score of 40-11. Then came the district final where a red hot Northwestern Lehigh team routed them 34-14.
2023 looks highly promising with only 12 seniors graduating. They played a lot of people last year including freshman and sophomores and always have a large roster. The headliners are quarterback Trevor Minalda (6-1, 205, sr), wide out stand out Joey Flail and lineman Sander Stokes (6-5, 265, jr), Brandlee Himes (6-1, 265, sr), Neekoli Caraballa (6-1, 255, sr) and Rb/LB Jaxson Chowansky (5-11, 220, sr). The schedule opens at rival Mount Carmel, then the home opener against Blue Mountain before going back on the road to play Pine Grove.
6 Scranton Prep D2 9-4
Prep started last year with a young and inexperienced group that matured noticeably by year’s end. Beginning with early season losses to city rival Scranton High (8-4) 21-9 and AA power Lakeland (11-1) 41-14, they developed into a team that by game #11 was losing competitively on the road at AAAA muscle team Valley View (10-3) 22-16. The season ended with yet another competitive loss, this one in the opening round of States to Neumann Goretti (11-4) 22-14, the same Neumann team that lost in the State Final to Belle Vernon 9-8. Coach Terry Gallagher clearly has the program rolling at 72-14 since his arrival in 2016. Last year’s team started a sophomore quarterback in Louis Paris who rushed for 857 and passed for 1008 yards. Running back Quinten Palermo (5-10, 185, jr) also returns after rushing for 1133 yards plus other backs and leading receivers. Most of the D returns setting the Cavaliers up for something special. They open with back-to-back homers against Lakeland and West Scranton before a road trip to Lake Lehman and the LFC-Division 1 opener against what appears to be a loaded Delaware Valley team.
7 West Perry D3 11-2
The Mustangs had their best season last year with a record setting 11 wins advancing them to the District-3 title game where they were swamped by Wyomissing (13-1) 63-7. They beat some good teams along the way in Juniata (8-4) 24-0 and Lancaster Catholic (10-1) 63-20. But they were exposed against the state’s top quality programs losing too Steelton High (14-1) 53-34 who went on to win the 1A State Title and Wyomissing (13-1) 63-7, the 3A semifinal runner-up. For 2023, they return super dual threat quarterback Marcus Quaker (64%-2049, 22/7, 1066ry) and wide out Ian Goodling (71/1236), a devastating tandem. With half the defense returning they will again contender in the division and districts.
8 Grove City D10 9-4
Last year saw the Eagles negotiate their way reasonably well through a tough schedule that included games against Avonworth, Farrell, Hickory and Sharpsville before being eliminated by and Martinsburg Central in the PIAA quarterfinal. The good news for 2023 is almost everyone returns including the Qb Hunter Hollman (61%-2086, 18/14, 177-578ry!), their three leading receivers with 123 receptions for 1849 yards and seven from the defense that needs to improve from 23ppg yield. So does the QB throwing 14 picks. Straighten those issues out and who knows how good they can be in 2023.
9 Northwestern Lehigh D11 11-3
The Tigers recovered from an early season loss to rival Northern Lehigh (12-2) 34-27 to go on a tear, beating quality teams from Southern Lehigh (9-3), Notre Dame (9-3) and North Schuylkill (11-3) before losing at South Philly’s Super Site in the State quarterfinal to Neumann Goretti (11-4) 38-6. For 2023, they graduate quarterback Cade Christopher (49%-799, 11/2, 245-1886ry!) but return running back Dalton Clymer (238-1447) and their top three receivers with six from the defense. Looking at their system and five year won-loss of 48-12, they should be able to replace the quarterback. This year’s schedule will test them with three road games in their first four opening at Tamaqua, home to Northern Lehigh then consecutive road games at Blue Mountain and Penn Argyl.
10 Berks Catholic D3 5-6
Berks Catholic had their first losing season ever since opening in 2011, generating a 108-29 record. The schedule was demanding as always with losses to Loyalsock Township (11-2, D4-3A runner up), Executive Education Academy (8-4, D11-2A champ), Pope John Paul II (10-2, D1-4A runner up) and Wyomissing (13-1, D3-3A champ). For 2023, they graduate some key pieces in Josiah Jordan (1225ry, 219py) and OL/DL Jacob Collazo (6-3, 295). But much of last year’s team is back with the quarterback, the #2 and #3 rushers and their #2 wide out. Eight return to the defense that has been porous the last four years allowing (2019 onward) 20, 32, 25 and 23ppg. Their first four games will tell us about them opening at highly regarded Loyalsock Township, home to Executive Education Academy, then Pope John Paul II before heading to Wyomissing to see what the Trojans have this year.

PA Preps High School Football Talk

Find out what some of the top players in the state are saying about football now!

......................................................................................................

Q&A with Montour wide receiver Daniel Batch
How did the high school football season go overall?
“It went really well for my first season.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“We have team workouts to get better for next year.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“I feel like we will do really well.”

What team do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“Probably Aliquippa, they always have a good team.”

Who is the toughest individual player your team will face off against?
“Like I said Aliquippa and I can’t wait to go against Brandon Banks again, he is a really good player and it will help me to get better.”

......................................................................................................
Q&A with Pen Argyl wide receiver Damian Tyminski
How did the high school football season go overall?
“It was one step up from before, just constant work and that drive to be better. Looking to win districts this upcoming year.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“I’m just ready to get into the true offseason even though I’m always doing stuff, and getting to a lot of school camps. Been lifting with the team, getting field work and getting some rest as well from those workouts.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“I feel that our team will, if we work how we have been and get it to click early on, at minimum an 8-2 record. I think it’s going to be a year to win the district chip and see what we can do from there.”

What team do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“I think Northwestern Lehigh will be one of the tougher schools on our schedule. I’m not and I know our team is not worried about any team, and especially this year for the regular season our biggest enemies are going to be ourselves, but it’s just because they are the biggest school we are going to play in the regular season, more kids to choose from.”

Who is the toughest individual player your team will face off against?
“We’re not worried about anyone, we have our respect for certain players, as athletes and the way they conduct themselves on the field when they play us, but no one comes to mind in specifics.”

......................................................................................................
Q&A with Muncy wide receiver Noah Confer
How did the high school football season go overall?
“Our regular season went pretty well, but we just didn’t prepare enough for the post season and it showed in our district championship game.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
