SJP Next Year

I can't remember seeing Myles Talley in last night's game. Did he play? I expected he'd be a major part of the defense this year. Maybe he was dealing with an injury.

The Prep returns a great deal on offense next year: most of the line, both running backs and a number of receivers. Duell should be fine as QB. The big question mark on defense will be the line. Will they try to have some guys go both ways?

Full Circle

Being around a very long time, I've come full circle.
Before state championships we played for "League Titles"
I longed for teams to have a chance to compete for STATES.
Now with all of what's out there. I won't go into that, enough said already!
I wish we could go back to PCL champs, Central League Champs, Sub One etc. etc. etc.
Play a NON league, or crosstown rival, or just a game we would like to see on thanksgiving day and be done with it.
Will we still have issues? Of course we will! To this extreme, I doubt it.
Old man out!

6a final

I know the weather is probably dictating this, but this is much more of a defensive battle than I'm sure most if not all expected. I'm sure PIAA is on its knees right now praying that the game stays this competitive in the 2nd half after what has happened for much of the weekend. Should be a great 2nd half. Crazy to think only 24 min left in this season

Archbishop Wood 5 A champions

Well I read all of the posts about the poor Gateway being overmatched and the normal PCL stuff, but nothing except pre game mentions of players that played. The Wood team IMO represents good solid football. Peoples and Lambert were superb at running behind an average sized line that just is unbelievably technically solid. If you like to watch old style football at its best tune into AW. Pitts was a star at its finest ,both on offense and defense. Palmer and company [Huck nailed it about the D backs] shut down a great QB and receiver. The coaching was as good as it gets. Devlin is among the best in the state. Lets not forget that Gateway played and won against some pretty good competition this year. As a side note, the officials were so damn obvious in those magical penalties from the second quarter on trying to keep the score down. I realize Wood could have put up another 28 points but its NOT the refs job to call uncalled for penalties. They should not Ref another championship game. They didn't do that crap in the 1 A or 2 A games so I wonder why in the 5 A Duh !!! Well congratulations coach Devlin and his staff and most of all to the players.

'Tep trimmed by Cath. Prep, 38-28; Wood vs. Gateway, Friday at 7:00 pm

Looks as if the Panthers may have shot themselves in the foot with more mistakes and penalties than they needed as the Ramblers took the Thursday night rubber match contest between these two schools.

Then tomorrow night's 7:00 pm game in Hershey features Archbishop Wood's 11-2 Vikings gang versus the 14-1 Gateway Gators squad in what should be a good old-fashioned smash-mouth contest.

And are these games being streamed? I think I need to sign up for the Wood game and then Saturday's showdown between Philly's 13-0 St. Joe's Hawks and the also untarnished 15-0 Pine-Richland Rams.

3A Final; Dec 9th 12-PM
Middletown D3 14-0 vs Quaker Valley D7 13-1

Middletown showed why they are one of the top teams in the state by totally dominating Conwell Egan (7-7) 49-7. A measure of their defensive prowess was shown when they held CEC’s outstanding running back Patrick Garwo to 61 yards rushing. While many of us expected more, this one was over early with the Blue Raiders out to a 21-0 1st quarter lead that grew to 28-7 at the half. That has been their hallmark this season, jumping you early then pounding away with an array of backs while the D takes care of business on their end. Their defense, through its physicality sets a lot of it up, giving the offense great field position then hunkering down allowing but 2 touchdowns in the postseason. They prefer the run but Scott Ash can air it out as evidenced by his 192 yards and 2 touchdown passes. But record setting Brady Fox is often the centerpiece and again showed why, rushing for 174 yards and 4 touchdowns. The thing about teams making another deep run like Middletown as last year’s AAA runner-up is that none of this is new to them. And how about CEC getting to this point. No one expected that!
Out west Quaker Valley was taking care of business zipping past Sharon (10-4) 43-23. But it wasn’t too easy with the young Tigers clawing their way to a 14-10 deficit before QV took control, outscoring them 29-13 in the 2nd half. That they hung in that long or got this far is impressive. Excepting Aliquippa, no one has managed the Quakers, not with duel threat quarterback Ricky Guss tearing things up as only the 4th QB in Wpial history to pass for over 2000 yards (2142) and rush for over 1000 (1144) in a season. He accumulated 270 against Sharon, completing 14 of 24 passes for 208 yards, and rushed for 68 more, totaling 4 Tds. It was a balanced attack getting 208 yards rushing and 204 passing. Sharon ended their season with 116 yards rushing and 198 passing. Continuing with Sharon for a moment, it was a good year knowing they recovered from a 1-2 start with sophomore quarterback Lane Voytik throwing for 2636 yards. Junior running back Jordan Wilson (1233) also returns with over 3000 career yards to date along with 4 linemen so look for them to be here again next year.
About the game, it brings together two really accomplished teams with QV the more versatile of the two offensively with Guss (see above) complimented by JT Taylor’s 931 yards rushing and 409 in receptions along with WRs Isaiah McNair’s 886 yards in receptions and Ryan Jakovic’s 428. Looks threatening and they are, but if the Raiders can get any pressure on Guss they might bring into play his 49% completion rate and 12 interceptions. That hasn’t bothered them yet, not with wins against North Catholic, Aliquippa, Derry, Seton LaSalle and Sharon who have a combined record of 50-13. Middletown will put some big bodies on them upfront in Brendan Douglas 6-5, 285, Matt Lugo 6-0 265, Salvatore Coretti 6-1 255 and others. They are fast and unyielding, allowing 93 total points, or 6ppg on average. The game looks to be close except for Middletown’s extreme D stats swinging it to 18.5 their way.

6A Final; Dec 9th 6-PM
Saint Joseph’s Prep D11 13-0 vs Pine Richland D7 15-0

St. Joe’s….27th straight win!
There isn’t enough space to write-up the 53-49 back-and-forth of St. Joe’s successful encounter with Coatesville (13-2) but rest assured it was an old fashion classic between heavyweights at sold out Kottmeyer where many a great struggle have been decided. In football the term heavyweight is often overused (hackneyed?) but not when describing this one as it may have topped them all with each striking what seemed a decisive blow just to have the other side respond with an equally decisive counter stroke. Talk about anxious. St. Joseph’s found themselves in a 21-3 hole (late 2nd qtr) that became 21-10 at the half and 28-10 in the early 3rd. But they responded with six 2nd half scores to bring it home.
Marquez McCray had a strong game completing 16 of 26 passes for 190 yards and 2 touchdowns (nice having a senior QB) while rushing for 50 yards and 4 touchdowns. Kolbe Burrell had 124 yards on 9 carries with Marques Mason getting 68 yards on 18 totes. His touchdown from the 3 with 90 seconds left in the game iced it. James Cherry (late injury, severity?) and Brandon Sanders had 5 catches apiece for 68 yards each. Allowing 49 points might create the impressive the D was on vacation. But that would do a disservice to the outstanding offense on the other side of the field, and to a Hawk defense that came up with 3 turnovers that led to scores. They had 2 picks, one returned by Dawson DeLuliis 72 yards to set up a score, Zach Bougess had the other, a recovered fumble by Liam Johnson deep in Raider territory that led to another score, and a bad snap on a punt near the goal line to get another. Linebacker mentality maybe but special teams and defense always rules! St. Joe’s had no turnovers. Talking Football 101, you still have to run the football and Coatesville didn’t, with only 24 attempts leading to 102 yards while the Hawks had 238 yards rushing on 46 carries. So the two year winning streak continues.
Coatesville’s RIcky Ortega showed why he’s one of the most exciting quarterbacks in the state and beyond completing 24 of 38 passes for 424 yards and 6 touchdowns, most of them to Dapree Bryant who caught 9 for 272 yards, scoring 3 times. Kahtero Summers caught 5 for 74 and a score. The Red Raider D-Front was lights out early but how about St. Joe’s adjusting well (as always), evidenced by their outscoring Coatesville 43-28 thereon. Think about that a while, 43 2nd half points against a defense allowing 15ppg (209 all year) coming in!

Over on the left side of the state, another District-3 team bit the dust (plastic actually) at Altoona’s Mansion Park Stadium where Pine Richland continued their inexorable march to the state final with a well contested 28-7 victory. This was new territory for the Rams being held in check by anyone, let alone a team from a district supposedly having a down year with no chance of winning. Good luck selling that one to any team, especially a veteran bunch of Streaks who’ve had attitude all year, beating Central Dauphin and Wilson twice, and Cumberland Valley who before St. Joe’s were the only team to beat Coatesville. Regardless, the Streaks came to get some, holding the prolific Pine Richland offense (48ppg avg, 714 on year) to a slim 13-0 halftime lead. ‘Tho reputed to have a few ailing players (who isn’t ailing this time of year) the Rams responded enough to outscore the Blue Streaks 15-7 and go on for the win. Phil Jurkovec had his usual game completing 22 of 34 passes for 246 yards and 2 scores while rushing for another score and 68 yards. Raymond Falcone and Jason DeFrancsis combined for 15 receptions for 104 and 60 yards respectively. Manheim Township’s D stepped up big time, carrying most of the load and holding the Rams to 66 rush yards and sacking Jurkovec three time. Qb Luke Emge completed 14 of 32 for 164 yards with Pine Richland’s defense being the real winner holding Township to 266 total yards with Emge strip sacked 3 times. 5 turnovers proved fatal, 4 fumbles and a pick, despite a great effort from the D holding PR to 312 total yards. Defense! And how about these quarterbacks, Jurkovec going to Notre Dame, Emge to Harvard!

About the match up, this is St. Joseph’s 4th appearance in the title game, with wins against Pittsburgh Central Catholic in 2013, Pine Richland in 2014 and Central Catholic again last year. For the Rams and apart from 2014, they won Silver in 2003 as a 3A losing to Manheim Central. Knowing how St. Joe’s managed Coatesville has to have them favored here as does their far more difficult schedule and big game experience. Pine Richland is a great team but the WPIAL was down this year, impacting their stats to show an edge offensively. St. Joe’s seems at a disadvantage in that sector of seasonal stats until you view what they did offensively against Parkland (49-14) and when pushed against Coatesville. They too have an explosive offense and more impressive defensive stats against a stronger slate of teams. That’s not to disparage Pine Richland’s defense that is solid or their explosive offense. In what looks like a game that could very well mimic the 2014 game won by St. Joe’s 49-41, they are favored here by 6.77 points.

1A Final; Dec 7th 1-PM
Homer-Center D6, 13-1 vs Jeannette D7, 14-1

Homer Center got another big win last week that surprised many pundits when they defeated Steelton Highspire’s Steamrollers 20-14. This comes on the heels of their previous week’s stunner when they defeated 3-time defending state champ Bishop Guilfoyle by the same score to end their 59 game winning streak. The Rollers (11-3) came in as at least a slight favorite in this one and did move the ball with Qb Malachi Young throwing for 210 yards and 2 scores while Dupre Andrews rushed for 126 yards. They broke a few big gainers (65 and 77) for scores but did not have the muscle to match them up front as the Wildcats did what District-6 teams do, pound away, in this case for 324 rush yards and 355 total yards. Big Jesse Lee (6-1, 220, sr) rushed for 148 yards with Mike McCracken (5-11, 185, sr) gaining 122. Lee has 1384 yards on the year while McCracken has 1104. Their win over Steel High makes Homer Center the 1st team from Indiana County to ever make it to the state finals.
As expected, Jeannette got a war from Farrell (11-3) who showed well in special teams returning a kick-off 89 yards for the score. But that was it with Jeannette’s defense shutting them down to 159 total yards (108 rushing) in a 17-6 win. Jeannette had 284 yards of offense as the Steeler D did their job as well. But All-Everything QB/RB Robert Kennedy proved too much, rushing for 128 yards, catching 2 passes for 58 yards, intercepting 2 passes (12th of year) while completing 2 of 2 passes for 24 yards. For the year he completed 57% of his passes fo1329 yards while rushing for 1242 yards. Co-Qb Seth Howard completed 7 of 12 passes for 116 yards. They move on to play Homer Center in their 3rd visit to Chocolate Town (2A playoffs) where they lost to Wilson Boro (16-0) 29-28 in 2006 with a 14-2 squad, before coming back the following year for gold, with an 16-0 team to beat Dunmore (14-2) 49-21. The math is calling this one even although the Jayhawks have the more difficult schedule. Looking at the most difficult teams played recently shows the following; HC’s vs Bishop Guilfoyle and Steel High compared to Jeannette’s vs Rochester, Clairton, Imani Christian and Farrell. Homer Center’s last two wins really jump out but no more than the string Jeannette put together in the postseason taking down the aforementioned quality teams. I think it's Jeannette but the math says Wildcats by .59.

4A Final; Dec 7th 7-PM
Imhotep Charter School D11 12-1 vs Cathedral Prep D10 13-0

Imhotep had no trouble with Bethlehem Catholic (12-3), shutting their offense down completely by disallowing an offensive touchdown in a 34-14 win. Who expected that? This was accomplished without their premier running back Isheem Young who was suspended. BC’s only scores came on special teams breakdowns allowing a fumble returned for a score and another recovered in the end zone. They came into the game averaging 42ppg, making this Imhotep’s best defensive effort against a quality opponent of the season, holding them to 190 total yards of which 70 came on the ground. Contrasting this to TEP’s 469 total yards of offense shows the enormity of the rout, particularly knowing 379 of those yards came on the ground. Without the suspended Young, Tykee Smith (5-11, 190, jr) more than filled the bill getting 256 rush yards on 31 carries along with Khadarius Samson’s 85 yards on 7 carries. Qb Jalen Sutton-Christian made a lot of this work easy completing 5 of 5 passes for 90 yards and rushing for another 98 yards. Yusuf Terry caught all 5 of his throws. The win provides for a great rematch of last year’s final won by Cathedral Prep 27-20. Last week saw the Ramblers take care of Berks Catholic in a somewhat misleading score of 42-24 after Berks battled to a 21-21 tie at halftime. Berks kept it tight but couldn’t control running back Billy Lucas who found every crack and crevice, rushing for 272 yards, scoring on runs of 59, 23, 21, 49 and 85 yards on 14 carries. It’s too easy saying Cathedral wore them down. They simply had more, finishing off with a 21-3 2nd half. The stats show a strong rushing performance by both with Prep rushing for 372 yards to 282 for Berks. Passing was a side show with Prep completing 5 of 14 for 98 yards to Berks 88 yards on 9 of 14 completions. Looking at high end opponents of both ICS and ECP shows ICS losing to Harrisburg, bad, 33-14, but it was early. Last week they stuffed Bethlehem Catholic 34-14 who can be linked to high end teams Parkland who beat them 38-24 and Selinsgrove who they beat 34-33. Doing the same with ECP shows a season opening throttling of Pittsburgh Central Catholic (10-3, 6A WPIAL runner-up) 40-7 and a win at Warren, MI over the Div-2 champ De La Salle (12-2, titles 14, 17, runner-up 06, 08) 33-23, formerly Detroit De La Salle. All that convoluted math has Cathedral Prep winning in a struggle by 7.60 points.

All games at Hershey Park Stadium.

2A Final; Dec 8th 1-PM
Southern Columbia D4 15-0 vs Wilmington D10 14-0

You know a team is good when they embarrass another good team, especially one as credentialed as the Dunmore program. Still, anytime you see the Bucks destroyed by a 56-19 score, it gets your attention. But then everything about Southern Columbia gets your attention, whether its their 49 unanswered points after falling behind 13-7 in the 1st quarter, total yardage stats of 568 yards (consider the opponent!), or knowing they are headed to their 16th (16th!) state championship game. Scary thinking this was a young team last year that got to the final and one that is still young in many key areas, including junior Qb Stone Hollenbach (6-3, 190) with a 63% rate, a 27/5 Td-Pick ratio and 2144 passing yards on the year, sophomore running back Gaige Garcie with 2144 rush yards or another sophomore that has PSU Coach Franklin’s interest in Julian Fleming (6-3, 185) with 1394 yards in receptions. That all came together last week when they overwhelmed Dunmore. Qb Hollenbach completed 8 of 13 for 140 yards with Gaige Garcia getting 238 yards on 12 carries for 4 scores. Holding the Bucks to 154 total yards of offense tells the story there.

The other half of the bracket had Wilmington and Washington locked in a high scoring game at Slippery Rock University where 5 Washington turnovers helped the Greyhounds eke out a 49-42 win, in part by converted 4 of those turnovers to touchdowns. Can’t throw 3 Interceptions, lose a fumble or muff a punt and expect to win at this level, not against this team. Washington dinged them for 404 total yards with their unstoppable back Nick Welsh (2085 total) getting 248 yards rushing, but it wasn’t enough. Qb Robert Pontius was the spark for the Hounds completing 4 of 5 passes for 72 yards and rushing for 108 more on 15 carries. Fullback Jack Patton had 102 yards on 16 carries. Wilmington historically is ground and pound behind a surprisingly large line for a Double-A, including Colton Richards 6-2 255, Jim Reed 6-0 215, Connor Vas-gal 6-0, 250 freshman, Zach Andrews 6-0, 260 and 3 year starter at center Matt Jamaison 5-10, 185. Like Southern, they are a historic powerhouse going 96-20 from 2004 to 2012 followed by a mini slump of 18-14 the next 3 years before bouncing back last year at 14-2. This is their 3rd trip to the final winning Silver in 1988 and Gold in 2008. They’re looking good but not as good as the Tigers from Southern Columbia who look overwhelming at this point with a few more weapons to have them favored here by 16.06 points.

5A Final; Dec 8th 7-PM
Archbishop Wood D11 11-2 vs Gateway D7 14-1

Manheim Central (13-1) brought a balanced and powerful attack to the game, gaining 142 yards on the ground and 184 on top but it wasn’t enough against a dynamic quarterback across the field and a freshman field goal kicker. This one looked like it might go to overtime with both teams trading scores, from a 14-14 tie at the half to a 28-28 tie with 30 second left in the game. The Barons sold out, denying anything on the ground, holding Gateway to 76 yards. Unfortunately for Central, they had no answer for Gateway’s aerial assault that rained down on them the entire game, totaling 486 yards from above. Qb Brady Walker completed 36 of 50 passes. That’s a 72% completion rate, something you might expect from the team over in Gibsonia. Central picked off 2 passes but 3 got through for scores to Courtney Jackson who totaled 264 yards in 15 receptions. Heck of a defensive effort keeping Gateway from scoring more, forcing them to go 18.1 yards to get a single point. But it wasn’t enough as freshman Jayson Jenkins trotted onto the field to kick a 23-yards field goal with 30 seconds left in the game. Freshman!

The other game saw Archbishop Wood in full control defeating Unionville (13-2) 49-28. The Indians fell behind early because of Wood’s dominant running game that grinded out 302 yards rushing. Nassir Peoples had a big chunk of that gaining 146 yards on 23 carries. The Mercy Rule kicked in midway through the 3rd quarter at 43-7 with Unionville scoring twice in the final 8 minutes of the game. But Wood was always in control, holding a solid Unionville team to 183 total yards of offense to secure their 9th straight win. The win put them against Gateway where they will go for their 2nd consecutive PIAA 5A title and 5th championship in the last 7 years, winning state titles in 2011 (14-1) defeating Bishop McDevitt 52-0, 2013 (13-2) defeating McDevitt again 22-10, 2014 (14-1) beating Central Valley 33-14 and last year (11-2) defeating Harrisburg 37-0. They won Silver runner-up medals in 2008 and 2012. Since 2008’s initial playoff appearance, they have 122 wins against 19 losses. Pretty special. The question for Wood or at least a major one is can they keep up with Gateway’s quickness, particularly in the passing game. And can they get to Brady Walker. For Gateway, we’ll find out if they can stand the hammer blows of Nasir Peoples (6-1, 190, 1571), Chris Blackstone (5-11, 215, 402) and Adrian Lambert (6-0, 205, 312 yds). Qb Jack Colyar can also get it there (6-2, 200, 1152, 52%) to receivers Kyle Pitts (6-6, 240, 20/371) at tight end and Ryan Loughlin (6-0, 170, 25/572). Who wants to get in front of Pitts, their physical O-Line (after first contact) or any of their backs? Football can be painful and Wood will bring a lot of it. But Gateway is no shrinking violet, having banged some heads on the way to Hershey, particularly in the post season. Last week’s struggle with Manheim Central’s big, physical and athletic line (Wood light?) may be a “tell” since they had some difficulty with them, allowing 5.6 ypc. MC goes 6-0, 240-270 but don’t have Nasir Peoples and company. Nor does Gateway have Woods recent and pronounced playoff experience at this level. Wood takes this one but the Gators show up and give battle, losing by 11.57 points.

Merger of two Topics

This is kind of a merger of 2 recent topics on the board the past few weeks. In reading the Article on the Young arrest from Imhotep, the article says he was arrested Friday morning at "his" apartment. Not his brothers apartment, his moms apartment, etc.but his apartment. If this in fact true, how is an 18 year old kid affording his own apartment in this day and age and if he is in fact living on his own that may be part of the ;problem, but there did not seem any concern of this issue or red flags raised.

Then, in light of all transfer/recruiting talk going on, I got to thinking: If a adult ( 18 yrs old) high school player simply chose to move on his own , not with his parents, or guardian, or any family member, into a different school district, are there any rules in place to stop that? We often here stories about a family moving from Doyelstown to Lansdale so they kid can QB at Npenn, but if the kid is 18, can he just move on his own?

Delco Times transfer article - hey writer

You are promoting hate singling out Catholic schools. What about Micah Parsons? Your article sucks as you are trying to spin it. Report examples everywhere as this is the second or third you focused on negativity of Catholic schools. Let’s by clear clown the in season transfer happens in pubs as you so closely hold as holier than thou.
