My 2A preview will not be as thorough as the 3A overview you can find on the other thread. I know the top of each bracket, but don’t have the same depth of knowledge 1-20 in each weight. So here, I’m going to pick my champ and list some contenders. It is an AWESOME year in 2A, it will be a tremendous set of finals and there are a couple really deep weight classes. The top end is always there in small schools (which is why one state tournament would be the dream) and this year is no exception.
106
Jaden Pepe, Wyoming Area (Fr. 45-2) over Branden Wentzel, Montoursville (Fr. 42-7)
Other Contenders
Calan Bollman, Chestnut Ridge (Fr. 37-3)
Coen Bainey, Bald Eagle Area (Fr. 34-6)
Evan Maag, Notre Dame (So. 32-9)
Pepe finished third in the absolutely brutal NE Regional last weekend (which featured five of the top six in the state) and left the #1 ranked wrestler home. Pepe has been #1 for a lot of the year and I think he’s the best guy, but it’s anybody’s weight.
113
Gary Steen, Reynolds (Jr. 44-1; S1, S3; Pittsburgh) over Joey Fischer, South Park (Jr. 41-2; S4; Clarion)
Other Contenders
Brett Ungar, Notre Dame (Jr. 42-2; NJ6, NJ1)
Kai Burkett, Chestnut Ridge (Jr. 36-5)
The story here is Steen and Ungar hitting in semifinals. Both are in the top 8 in the country and split matches this season - Steen winning at Ironman with Ungar turning the tables at state duals, both one takedown matches. However, Ungar is a transfer from Hunterdon Central in New Jersey, where he won a state title as a sophomore, which means he does not receive any bonus points for prior PA state finish in seeding, which drops him onto Steen’s side. Most consider that the de facto final, though Joey Fischer is also nationally ranked by some outlets and a former Fargo champion.
120
Brandan Chletsos, Notre Dame (So. 48-4; S6) over Sheldon Seymour, Troy (Sr. 35-1; S4, S1; Lehigh)
Gable Strickland, Benton (Jr. 36-3; S5, S5)
Ryan Michaels, Elizabeth Forward (Sr. 42-2; S3)
Kole Biscoe, Southern Columbia (So. 42-5; S2)
Nate Smith, Bishop McDevitt (Sr. 31-2; S5, S7, S3)
The world is just finding out about Brandan Chletsos, who had a solid freshman year at 126, where he placed at Hershey, but has turned himself into a national caliber wrestler now down at 120. The Easton product is lethal on top and has wrestled one of the best schedules in the country. Seymour is a returning state champ, but I think Chletsos wins his first of three titles this weekend. However, the weight is stupid deep, with any of the top six a reasonable pick to win thte title.
126
Ryan Crookham, Notre Dame (So. 46-1; S1) over Jackson Arrington, Forest Hills (So. 30-1; S1)
Other Contenders
Levi Haines, Biglerville (So. 27-3; S2)
On paper, this is an incredible match up of sophomores who both won state titles as freshmen. In practice, Crookham is on another level. He’s the #2 ranked wrestler in the country, who lost 4-3 on a last second reversal against #1. He majored returning finalist Levi Haines last week in the regional finals and is as safe a bet as there is in the tournament.
132
Brock McMillen, Glendale (Jr. 32-3; S2, S1; Pittsburgh) over Ian Oswalt, Burrell (Jr. 42-6; S4, S5)
Other Contenders
Anthony Glasl, Brockway (Sr. 35-1; S6, S5)
Kaeden Berger, Reynolds (Jr. 39-7; S7)
Adam Jacob, East Pennsboro (Sr. 32-5; S6)
A wide open weight class, though returning state champ Brock McMillen is considered the class of the field. Lots of moving parts here and I could see any of the top five in finals.
138
Kaden Cassidy, Bedford (Sr. 34-0; S3, S3; George Mason) over Kenny Kiser, Saegertown (Sr. 40-3; S2)
Other contenders
Zack Witmer, St. Joseph’s Academy (Jr. 32-5; S5, S4)
Hunter Mays, Conwell-Egan (So. 37-3; )
Jake Jones, Saucon Valley (Fr. 41-6)
Patrick Edmondson, Southern Columbia (Jr. 22-4; S6)
Lots of intrigue here. Cassidy has had a fabulous career, but has never made it to finals in Hershey. He’s a load on top, and has a decent draw, including a chance to avenge his late semifinal loss to Jason Jones by knocking out his superstar freshman brother in semis. The bottom half seems to me like a toss up between Kiser, a returning finalist, and Zack Witmer, though Mays could spoil (he was pinned by Jones late in a close match in SE regionals, which drops him into this half). Again, any of the top five or so could win this weight.
145
Gage McClenehan, Bald Eagle Area (Sr. 35-2) over Erik Gibson, Forest Hills (So. 37-2)
This is our first “put it in pen” finals. McClenehan, a state finalist two years ago in AAA before losing his junior season to a torn ACL sustained during football, is one of the best guys in the country at 152. Gibson is only a sophomore but built like a college wrestler and has skills way beyond his years. The two have split matches so far this season, and it has the chance to be a classic final.
152
Caleb Dowling, St. Joseph’s Academy (Sr. 40-4; S4, S2, S3; West Virginia) over Ben Haubert, Palisades (Jr. 37-3)
Other Contenders
Wesley Barnes, Southern Columbia (Fr. 36-9; JH1)
AJ Corrado, Burrell (Jr. 42-7; S7, S5)
Malachi Duvall, Penns Valley (Jr. 34-5; S7)
Tyler Martin Bishop McDevitt (Sr. 36-4; S6)
Dowling has been a high finisher his entire career, but does not yet have a state gold medal. He’s currently ranked #6 in the country and should be able to puncutate his career with a title. Who is opponent is remains to be seen. Haubert, whose older brother Nate was a state champ in 2018, has been on fire down the stretch and comes into states afte ra big regional finals win over Tyler Martin. I don’t think he’s quite ready for Dowling’s array of offensive attacks, but I think he can get there.
160
Andrew Cerniglia, Notre Dame (Sr. 42-1; S4, S1; Navy) over Thayne Lawrence, Frazier (Sr. 21-0; S3, S1, S1)
Welcome to the main event! While 170 in 3A is the best bracket, this is the best state final. Cerniglia and Lawrence are ranked #4 and #5 nationally and are two of the best wrestlers, regardless of weight class in Pennsylvania. Cergniglia has put together one of the best seasons of any wrestler in the country, with a Beast of the East title (where he pinned Luke Nichter and majored Clayton Ulrey) Ironman runner-up (where he beat Luca Augistine, majored Prep National Champ Jack Wehmeyer, and lost to national #1 Paddy Gallagher on a last second takedown). This all comes of the heels of his 14-0 win in the state finals last year. Lawrence, a two-time state champ, is undefeated on the year, and won Super 32 in the fall over national #2 Cael Valencia of California. But he missed most of December and January with a knee injury and has been rounding back into form. He’s huge for 160, but Cerniglia has a few too many skills, particularly as a mat wrestler, and I think he brings home his second gold.
170
Matt Arciuolo, Saucon Valley (Sr. 41-1; S3; Columbia) over Tyler Stoltzfus, St. Joseph’s Academy (Sr. 38-1; S5, S4)
Another weight class with two top ten nationally ranked wrestlers set to lock horns. Arciuolo started the year at 160, but with Cerniglia blocking his path locally, he moved up to 170 and was immediately one of the favorites. He beat Stoltzfus twice in Hershey last year, once in quarterfinals and again for third and fourth. Stoltzfus has jumped levels this year, illustrated by his insanely good Ironman and PowerAdes, where he won both titles and beat Jaden Bullock, Dom Mata, Trey Kibe, and Mac Stout in the process. Kibe returned the favor at Ultimate Warrior, but that is as good a kill sheet as any wrestler has at 170 this year. Yet, Arciuolo is my pick here, he’s been equally dominant, with fewer high end wins but more tests week-to-week in D11.
182
Austin Walley, Ellwood City (Sr. 41-1) over Dane Csencsits, Saucon Valley (Sr. 40-5; Pittsburgh)
This weight lost both of it’s top contenders with injuries to returning champ Dayton Pitzer and former #1 Ty Waltman. Walley is the favorite, though Csencsits work on top makes him a style match up nightmare for a lot of guys at 182.
195
Gaige Garcia, Southern Columbia (Sr. 45-1; S3, S3, S1; Michigan) over Braydon Herbster, Reynolds (Sr. 35-3)
Garcia, ranked #3 in the country, is known around these parts as a football standout, but he’s also one of the best upper weight wrestlers in America. He’s untouchable here.
220
Kolby Flank, Wilson (Sr. 40-1; S5) over Cameron Wood, Montoursville (Sr. 43-3; S4)
Flank knocked off Jake Ryan in January and has been the top dog here rankings wise since. The Wilson senior is really mobile and has wrestled a top notch schedule coming out of the Lehigh Valley. Hard to believe he would be the first Wilson state champ since they capped their fabulous run under Dave Crowell with three champs (Jeremy Hartrum, Nick Krecker, and Corey Garis) in 2002. The field could take this one, but Flank is the favorite.
285
Colby Whitehill, Brookville (Sr. 36-0; S8, S1; Pittsburgh) over Lear Quinton, Southern Columbia (Sr. 37-7; S4)
Whitehill, a returning champ and Fargo All American, is a big favorite here.
