had some trouble posting to original post. sorry, got cut off in character count?
Here are some thoughts about District 3.
*district champ,
y runner up
AAAA
1 Central Dauphin 11-3y
A lot of bodies back from last year’s runner-up including dual threat tandem QBs, running back Raleigh Sirb (5-9, 190, sr, 1352ry) and possibly one of the top D-Fronts in the state including DEs Reid Albright (5-10, 210, sr 101 tackles), last year’s spectacular freshman Micah Parsons (6-3, 215, so, 14saks, 27TFL), Rashaun Gabrel (6-1, 210, sr, 67 tackles), DLs Evan Childs (6-3, 270, jr) and Joe Williams (6-5, 270, sr). Also back at LBs Mike Betz (5-11, 210, sr, 87 tackles, 10saks), Adam Thornton (5-10, 205, sr, 106 tackles). The secondary returns 2. Still feel CD is the top team in the West at this point with Parkland being the other clear favorite out of the East.
2 Wilson 14-1*
Boo coo bodies return to the D with a great running back in Shane Dantzler (5-9, 175, sr, 1659ry) and experience at QB (Jake Klein, 6-1, 200, sr), a good nucleus returning on D to have Bulldogs again in the hunt for districts and beyond. They’ve won 7 straight LL-Section-1 titles and 2 straight district titles.
3 Cedar Cliff 8-3
As a sophomore Grant Breneman (6-0, 185) threw for 2396 yards, completing 62% of passes with a tidy 24/8 Td to Pick ratio. Jayden Demmy (5-9, 200, sr) rumbled for 1789 yards snagging 12 passes for 148 yards. A bunch of receivers return including Mike Viti (6-0, 175, sr, 41/438) and TE Charles Chiazza (6-2, 230, sr).
4 Central Dauphin East 10-3
Another good edition like their sister school Central Dauphin that could not escape the long shadow of Wilson High the last 2 years, losing 31-14 in the regular and 9-6 in districts. They were 9 points away from beating both Central Dauphin and Wilson, so this is good stuff. Senior QB Jahad Neibauer (5-1,180, 52%, 1067, 426ry) is back but they’ll miss RB Joe Lemelle (806ry, 414py) along with their 3 leading receivers who had 97 receptions for 1333 yards. Last year’s super soph DE Brandon Hickerson-Rooks (6-1, 220) will key another quick front after collecting 98 tackles and 15TFL last year.
5 Cumberland Valley 9-3
They’ll break in a new quarterback to run the Wing-T but at least 3 linemen return with great size along with lines, people like seniors Chad Morris (6-1, 235), Shannon Dolan (5-11, 245), James Koblick (6-2, 275) and Robert Goodrich (6-3, 235) and Brock Ragni (6-2, 250) both juniors. A stable load of experienced backs return to help the new QB Josh Ferguson (6-0. 175, sr) transition to full time status.
Others:
The district is real deep this year with big numbers returning to many of the traditional powers, especially under center which will make for one exciting race for regular and post season honors. Here are three more Lancaster Lebanon teams out of Section-1 that have elevated their programs big time. They are not at Wilson’s level but typically give them a game and are most definitely not a walk over.
Lower Dauphin 9-3
A lot of bods back here including QB Tommy Klock (6-2, 210, sr, 1298, 49%, 13/8) and top running back George Hatalowich (5-11, 195, sr) who rushed for 1382 yards last year on 215 carries. Many other backs plus a few receivers return. Like Cedar Cliff who is also in the Mid Penn-Keystone, the stats while impressive came against teams like Middletown, Cedar Crest, Chambersburg, Susquehanna Township, Mechanicsburg, Hershey and Northern who had a combined won-loss of 19-51.
Manheim Township 8-4
Return QB Eric Benjamin (6-1, 215, sr, 64%, 2108py, 23/8, 218ry) and receiver John Stutz (6-0, 175, sr, 29/534) to get things going. Some big stuff returns up front to make it all happen in seniors Allen McCloud (6-3, 250, 63 tackles), Tanner Evan (6-4, 245, 44 tackles) and Paul Groff (6-0, 265, 14 tackles). OLB Riley MacDonald (6-0, 190, sr, 64 tackles) and SS John Stutz (6-0, 175, sr, 40 tackles) are a good foundation to rebuild those areas. Road trip to Central Dauphin and Red Lion followed by the home opener against Governor Mifflin will test the Streaks, showing us where they are.
Hempfield 7-5
The Black Knights also return a dangerous trigger man in Sam Kramer (6-3, 210, sr) who completed 53% of passes for 1212yards. But this one is a dual threat, banging for 1005 yards. Last year’s big freshman, David Martin (6-3, 210) impressed some people but won’t beat out the senior. Almost all the receivers return led by Will Blair (6-0, 185, sr) with 33 catches for 524 yards. Also ran for 543 yards on 83 carries. Top two LBs return and a bunch of experience in the secondary that is always key in a district that is not afraid to throw the football. It’s smash mouth in the LL, Berks, Mid Penn, et al….but they will fling it!
AAA
1 McDevitt 14-1*
Graduate a great QB in Nick Marsillio with 3772py (62%) and high end RBs Andre Robinson (1532) and Que’Shawn Jenkins (1065) but don’t worry about McDevitt who will plug in another sophomore quarterback from last year (Tayvon Bowers 6-2, 185, jr or Jacque Jackson, 6-0, 195, jr) any number of backs in waiting and the best senior receiver corps in the state in Kobay White (6-1, 195, 72-1230), Bryce Hall (6-2, 180, 56-989), Kryee Calli (6-4, 195, 37-753) and Chad Cortez (6-2, 190, 12-312). That likely interprets to one of the best secondaries as well. A great corps group returns to the D that allowed 12ppg last year. Hard seeing another Triple-A challenging in the district this year.
2 Lancaster Catholic 4-6
Replaced many on the staff last year and it showed with an inconsistent offense by LC standards that struggled at times. But they broke in new systems and a sophomore quarterback in Jordan Scott (5-10, 170, jr) who threw for 1692 yards while completing 61% of passes. Not bad for s soph! A Td/Pick ratio of 6 to 11 slowed them but that will improve. Considering the coaching changes, new offense and schedule difficulty (54-19 opponent W/L, Dallastown, Gov.Mifflin, Garden Spot, Man Cent, Lamp Stras and Cocalico) things should improve in year two.
3 Milton Hershey 9-3
Absolutely loaded with the return of QBs Keonte Lucas (5-10, 175, jr) and Thomas Kassmieh (5-10, 165, sr), RBs Qwasif Shabazz (5-6, 170, jr) and Dontrece Tasker (5-10, 170, jr). Inconsistent last year beating Mid Penn-Capital mates Camp Hill and Steelton Highspire but crushed by CD East 36-7 and upset by Boiling Springs 41-25 setting themselves up for 2nd round disappointing loss to Boone 28-16. Offense likely to improve on 27ppg. At 20ppg, the defense needs to upgrade as well.
4 Cocalico 10-1y
QB Dante Haines (5-11, 160, sr) and Brady Sawyer (5-8.60, jr) both return with RBs D.J. Fabiani and Hunter High with 805 and 721 rush yards respectively. Nice core returning to the D should provide for a good run at it.
5 Susquehanna Township 3-7
Look for a big rebound with QB Ben Moser entering his senior year and third as a starter following Hanna’s first losing season in 6 years (44-19 W/L from 09 to 13). A monster line (265 average) may have the Tribe hanging with fellow Mid Penn Keystone members McDevitt, Cedar Cliff, Lower Dauphin and Red Land. Brutal start of Weiser, Central Dauphin, CD East, Lower Dauphin, Red Land and McDevitt in their first 6 games (phew!) will tell the tale.
Others:
West York 10-2
Could be hurtin with the loss of multi threat QB Stanley Ross Campbell’s 1682rpy and 1474ry! But a big roster, tradition, size and speed allow Bulldogs to compete typically on a regular basis, hanging with the big dogs (2-1 vs 4As Dallastown, Red Lion and Central York) consistently. The Westies may not be at 2014’s level but will represent.
Manheim Central 8-4
OL Coach Dave Hahn replaces one of the great ones in Mike Williams who retired after last season with a 34 year won-loss of 348-75-3, 16 district titles along with a state title in 2003 plus silver in 2004 and 2009. Wow, what a legacy and great coach. Super quick Damon Comacho (5-6, 160, sr) is back after cranking out 1622 yards rushing last year. Big numbers return to the D as well.
Red Land 9-4
Most of the firepower of last year’s group graduated; QB Garrett Scott (1162py, 813ry) and RB Philip Overton (1869ry). Schedule will allow for a 4-0 start and junior Jake Radic (6-2, 180) to settle in with top receiver Hunter Brine (26/456) and Kyle Campbell (16/135). RB Justin Johnson (5-7, 186, jr, 92/562ry) will get the lion’s share of carries behind another athletic (225-235) O-line.
