Talks for separate playoffs

I do believe there is/was kids out there that had loads of talent but never reach their true potential because of bad coaching.
maybe but i heard coaches like Bill Cherpak say there are many great coaches that never won championships and even regularly miss the playoffs because they didn't have talent on their rosters

i think a kid with "loads of talent" can still excel at the high school level even with bad coaching

there are coaches with lots of championships that never get mentioned as a great coach because everybody knows his teams had far more talent

2 former coaches at Aliquippa and Clairton come to mind

Aliquippa forced up again? PIAA wrong or right?

Why don't hear of the word transient when we bring up Clairton, McKeesport, Monessen, etc?

Clairton had 20k in 1950 and now has under 6k.

McKeesport had 55k at it's peak and is around 17k now.

Monessen is in the same boat as are a bunch of other Mon Valley towns.
I was actually thinking of Clairton and their winning streak recently, is it coincidence that streak started right when Duquesne closed? it was said they mostly went to West Mifflin and East Allegheny but they could've gone anywhere

so steel- is your point, that you agree w brad- that Aliquippa is a "bunch of cheaters?"
They've got a great football culture for sure but schools with 1A enrollment don't have access to year in and year out talent like Quip has had for awhile now. I've known several kids who used an address but slept in another district.

I've always said if you want another sjp open a private school in beaver county. Can you imagine pulling all the best players from central valley, beaver falls, and Allquippa. Another area where you could have a football power is in Sharon Pa or hickory pa. You could pull the best athletes from Sharon, hickory, Wilmington, and the Youngstown / Boardman oh.

Big 33

drip - agree but imo neither of those things are gonna happen
The big 33 is no where near what it was. Hats off to Penn State for allowing their athletes to participate in the game. Naseer Denmark was MVP of this years game and players like Miles Sanders have played in the game. You can't get college athletes to participate in bowl games anymore so a high school all star games are no different.

ambridge is the most similar but still not as "distressed"- Aliquippa is very different than Beaver and Hopewell. Aliquippa has higher poverty and more single-parent homes- and much higher population loss than the others- Hopewell actually increased from 2010 to 2020. Aliquippa, since 1970 pop has gone from 22000 to 9000. And, that means- lots of homes went empty- then became cheap rentals. This town was crushed greatly with closure of steel industry.

All of this=more transient

I know Hopewell is the "white section" of Aliquippa but aren't the others similar to Aliquippa?

yep- agreed- that's my point- jimmy and joes AND x's and o's are important for most "good high school football players" which what this site, and the current thread topic is "about"

sure yes the quips break and bend rules, but first- the families might bend rules by using a shaky address- but im sure lots of times, the coaches are not "seeking and recruiting kids" im sure most people know that's "the place to go" to championships and get recruited for college. Also, the demographics of Aliquippa is very different than all those other communities- so yes, more transient people in Aliquippa.

Isn’t Tom Brady 6’4 225 pounds, was a (for the time) four star recruit - Tom Lemming had him as the #6 quarterback nationally in his class - who played at Michigan, and also got drafted to play professional baseball out of high school? Elite athlete
He was a 7th round pick. Watch his combine. It was sad and athleticism doesnt pop out too me. He's not a freak athlete like Micheal Vick or Lamar Jackson. He got better with coaching, hard work, and his football iq to become the goat which was my point. Go back and read through the thread.

what decade was the most enjoyable and interesting?

I would say the talent increased. The state is now sending more kids to big time college programs than ever.
That's simply not true.

If you go back and look at the recruiting data of kids going to "power 5" schools now and compare it to 30-40-50 years ago, it's not even close.

It's why the last 3 coaches at PSU starting with JoePa, made the inroads to the DMV. There just isn't as much talent per capita as there was during the 70's/80's/90's in PA.

Another data point is look at the PSAC in the 80's and 90s and compare it today. The PSAC top to bottom was once considered the best D2 league in football. It's fallen down the pecking order in the last 20 years. The majority of those rosters were PA kids. Nowadays, you see PSAC teams seeping into the DMV/Ohio/NJ for talent at a rate, I've never seen before.

there are thousands of kids in PA, right now, who prob were "not very good" when they were 10 or 11, worked their buts off and became a starter in HS (aka good for high school), then they graduate, and never play again, it happens all the time
Since we're in the 6 class era, lets be honest. There are a ton of schools from the 3A and down that struggle to put a JV team on the field on Saturdays and Mondays. That means if you're in 9th grade, you're probably in the 2 deep right away. Being a starter might be good in title doesn't usually mean you're a good player. You're typically a starter because most schools don't have depth.
